Shivaay movie review: Ajay Devgn film is a bloated star vehicle

Shivaay movie review: Ajay Devgn film is a monumental drag. While you think how much lower it can sink, it slips a few more notches.

Shivaay movie cast: Ajay Devgn, Sayyeshaa Saigal, Erika Kaar, Abigail Eames
Shivaay movie director: Ajay Devgn

Shivaay is a man of the mountains, fully alive only in their icy reaches. Then one day, love strikes, and everything changes.

Ajay Devgn's second directorial outing, in which he plays the In and As eponymous hero, sweeps us up on to craggy cliffs and down into deep crevasses, both in the Himalayas and in Bulgaria, and then leaves us high and dry. Well-made, this could have been a cross-continental film about filial love and romantic betrayal, but Shivaay' is a monumental near-three hour long drag, giving you too much empty time to wonder just how much lower it can sink, and the next thing you know, it slips a few more notches.

Shivaay movie review: Watch Ajay Devgn's Shivaay audience reaction

Devgn has played father to a little girl before, and done a serviceable job of it ( Main Aisa Hi Hoon'). He is, in fact, quite good around kids generally (Raju Chacha'). His first film as director tried exploring the thorny path those afflicted with Alzheimer's have to tread: it may not have been all the way successful, but it was a brave choice of subject. And he is one star who's never been afraid of underplaying, because that's how real actors roll.

Shivaay movie review: Watch Ajay Devgn on his movie, Shivaay

Here he abandons all actorly pretences and dons a dull superhero garb. He shares screen time with his speech impaired eight-year-old daughter (Abigail Eames) as he travels from a little hill town in India to Bulgaria in search of a woman (Erika Kaar) who abandoned them both. A clunky sub-plot involving violent child traffickers wearing creepy masks and a creepier old man come in the way, but Devgn is invincible and will brook no resistance.

And that's where the problem lies. Devgn employs all his too-familiar tricks (slo-mo walk, slit eyes, scything arms and legs) from his one man army south remakes, and makes us forget that he is trying for a character. All we see is a grim, unsmiling visage, with no hint of the vulnerability or humour that he has been capable of in his best parts. He may be kitted out as Shivaay but he is still in Singham' mode.

When Devgn steps off the screen, which is not for too long, on come a bunch of clueless people: an unintentionally hilarious 'ethical hacker' (Vir Das, having the most fun in the film), a corpulent diplomat who delivers lectures on the virtues of being a Bihari (Saurabh Shukla), a middle-aged man in a wheelchair (Girish Karnad, not quite sure what he is meant to do), and a pretty girl (Sayyeshaa Saigal) whose sole job description is to look upon the hero in wide-eyed adoration, when not thinking deeply in a bath-tub.

The only thing your eye can rest on is the spectacular scenery. The rest is a bloated star vehicle.

Shivaay Movie Review

Renuka Vyavahare, TNN, Oct 28, 2016, 01.54PM IST
CRITIC'S RATING: 3.0/5
AVG READERS' RATING: 3.5/5
Review This Movie Watch Trailer
Cast: Ajay Devgn, Abigail Eames, Erika Kaar, Sayyeshaa Saigal, Girish Karnad
Direction: Ajay Devgn
Genre: Action
Duration: 2 hours 52 minutes
AJAY'S NEVER-ENDING SAGA IS HIGH ON ACTION BUT LACKS SOUL

Story: Shivaay (Ajay Devgn), a fearless Himalayan mountaineer covered in Lord Shiva tattoos, heads to Bulgaria to fulfill his nine-year-old daughter Gaura's (Abigail Eames) wish of seeing her mother Olga (Erika Kaar), who abandoned them years ago. But their plan goes for a toss when the little girl gets kidnapped in the foreign land. Rescuing her from the masked child-traffickers becomes his only reason for survival.

Review: On heart-pounding beats of Bolo Har Har, Shivaay has a spectacular opening scene that sees Ajay descending dangerous Himalayan cliffs like a pro. The stunning cinematography captures the mountains like no Hindi film has managed so far. You feel you are in for an adrenaline pumping ride and expect a nerve-racking survival drama to unfold in the hills, on the lines of Cliffhanger' or Vertical Limit'. However, the film takes a cliched spin and ends up looking like a slow-mo version of Liam Neeson's Taken' franchise.

The abduction of his daughter turns our chillum-smoking cool trekker into an angry killer, who vows to bust the flesh trade racket in Bulgaria. Soon high-octane, gravity and death-defying action sequences take centre stage, which are on par with the Hollywood films. An extended car-chase sequence in particular is outstanding.

However, the film has its issues, biggest being its run-time (3 hours) and thus, poor editing. Ajay, who is perhaps in every frame of the film doesn't know where to stop as a director. Scenes linger on forever, nullifying their own significance. His wish to incessantly harp on the father-daughter drama' makes his action thriller dreary, an odd mishmash of multiple genres that leaves you exhausted.

Boasting of great production values, we wish Ajay had invested in a better story as well. You don't feel for the characters or their ordeal. His quick romance with Hindi-speaking Olga, which blossoms in a dim-lit falling tent is preposterous.

Sayyeshaa Saigal makes a decent Hindi debut. Girish Karnad, who plays her father, ends up being the unintentional comic relief, owing to his inappropriate, corny dialogues.

Overall, Ajay is unstoppable in Shivaay but you wish he wasn't! Laced with visual excellence, you applaud his film's larger than life canvas but despite the efforts, his second directorial venture fails to engage you emotionally.

Saw Shivaay .Not as bad as critics are making it out to be .The grand scale at which the film has been deserves a special mention .Here is a breathtakingly gorgeous looking film. The effort that has gone into its making is laudable .Only if it was complimented by a strong script ,the outcome would have been much superior.
Shivaay has a spell binding start .The portion where the avalanche strikes initially is absolutely thrilling .The film slows down in the middle when the focus shifts to romantic track .These portions could have been much shorter .They feel like never ending .It is after Ajay and his daughter visit Bulgaria ,the film gains some momentum .The kidnapping is spell binding and makes you scream wow .

However ,what follows there after is pretty filmy .The entire track of hacker and how he is able to trace location is very very unconvincing .Ajay seems to have taken an easy route in the second half .The film could have been much more thrilling given the gigantic scale at which it has been made. The climax fight however is very exciting.

The biggest issue here is the length .It goes on and on .Musically also not too strong

Ajay does well .He looks the invincible character he has been asked to portray .The child artist is really good

Overall a treat for action lovers ..

2.5/5

'Shivaay': stylish with an archaic heart

cinema

Hindi cinema

The film turns out almost three hours long with just a wisp of a story.

There is a consistency of craft in Shivaay that is rarely seen in Hindi cinema. Like its relentless commitment towards slow motion. From the first shot to the last, everything moves s...l...o...w " the bullet that leaves the pistol to the teardrop that falls from the eye. No wonder the film turns out almost three hours long despite just a wisp of a story to tell.

Then there's Ajay Devgn in the titular role, a mountaineer who is perennially jumping off every cliff in any range in any part of the world. Otherwise he can be found smoking a chillum, extremely self-consciously at that, looking meaningfully at the audience as though telling them: stop me if you can. Well, he gets away with weed with the mythological sanction of Shiva behind him and the chants of Bolo har har har' egging him on. How then can the Censor Board point a disapproving finger?

There's more " the wintry grey-blue palette, the extreme close-ups especially of the eyes (remember Shiva's third eye) and the breathtakingly beautiful landscape " the lofty Himalayas and the pretty cobbled streets of Sofia in Bulgaria. And, for all the fans of action, there are long chases around the city landmarks, bloody fights, several dead bodies of Russians and Bulgarians and enough smashed cars to give Rohit Shetty a major inferiority complex, in not one but all his seven lives.

Welcome to the Ajay Devgn brand of stylish cinema. The kind that looks modish but sports a terribly archaic, outdated heart. Mountaineer Shivaay falls in love with Bulgarian Barbie doll-like beauty Olga (Erika Kaar) while trying to save her in a life-threatening avalanche. For a bit it made me get nostalgic about the shared socialist past of the two countries and how both have moved on but that would be a needless digression.

Genre:Action
Director: Ajay Devgn
Cast: Ajay Devgn, Erika Kaar, Abigail Eames, Sayesha Saigal, Vir Das, Girish Karnad, Saurabh Shukla
Bottomline:The Ajay Devgn brand of stylish cinema sports an archaic heart at its core.

To come back to their romance, she gets turned on by his mythological tattoos, one right there tantalisingly on the chest, he kisses her ever so chastely that she decides to take charge and guess what happens next? A baby called Gaura (Abigail Eames) is born. Olga doesn't want to have the child, she has too many other responsibilities. Shivaay wants one because he has no one to call his own. So the lady leaves for her home and the single father brings up the daughter.

Much later in the film Olga is made to feel the "guilt" as Shivaay delivers her a moral science lecture on motherhood. After all, no woman can ever be "complete" without experiencing the divine maternal joy, isn't it (sarcasm very much intended)!

That's not all. There's more " a Russian child trafficking racket in Bulgaria in which Shivaay and Gaura get trapped. Then there are two other needless subplots involving father-daughter duos (this could well turn out to be the Beti Bachao year for Bollywood) and an ethical hacker (Vir Das) for comic relief. All eventually does end well as Shivaay kills the main baddie in the Bulgarian equivalent of Kailash Parbat with an icicle trishul to the background score of Ja ja Kailash, ja kar vinaash.'

For some strange reason, while all Bulgarians, including the fickle mom and the several ugly villains are bad, all the individuals of Indian/subcontinental descent are nice human beings. Clearly, the Bulgarians did not know what they were in for or they just decided to bear with it for the sake of economics. For if this can lead to an increase in film shoots and in the inflow of Indian tourists to their country, well then why not?

Rajeev Masand review:

Taken over...and over

Shivaay

Rating: 2

October 28, 2016

Cast: Ajay Devgan, Erika Kaar, Abigail Eames, Sayyesha Saigal, Vir Das, Girish Karnad, Saurabh Shukla

Director: Ajay Devgan

Ajay Devgan's Shivaay is basically Taken with a big helping of melodrama, and a lot of talking. A LOT of talking. Way too much talking.

Action films don't usually have room for much dialogue. The fists or the bullets do most of the talking. But Shivaay isn't merely content with being an action movie. It wants to tell the emotional story of the bond between a single parent and his child, it takes a half-hearted stab at addressing the murky business of international child trafficking, and at its core it's intended as a showcase, a reminder if you please, of the charm and the appeal of its tough-guy leading man with the brooding eyes.

That's too many agendas attached to a single film, and as a result Shivaay unfolds over a butt-numbing 2 hours and 52 minutes. Frankly, that's as much time it would take to watch Liam Neeson rescue his daughter in the first Taken, and then his wife in Taken 2 - those are both roughly 90-minute films.

But jokes aside, the length wouldn't be such a problem if the film itself wasn't so derivative and boring. Yes, some of the action is pretty impressive - dizzying car chases shot with hand-held cameras, and visceral free range fights - but it's all in service of a plot that's entirely predictable and seldom compelling.

Ajay Devgan, who has also directed the film, plays Shivaay, a desperate father who must literally scale mountains to rescue his mute eight-year-old daughter when she's kidnapped on a trip they take to Bulgaria.

That simple but potentially promising premise is buried under so much idiotic backstory involving Devgan's character and the little girl's mother, you can't decide whether to laugh or to cringe. By way of indulgences, there are supporting characters who are rewarded with way more screen-time than they deserve. (A bathtub song for the young lady at the embassy who helps our hero track his daughter???) And then there are absolutely unnecessary characters that serve no purpose whatsoever. (Yes, Girish Karnad, I'm looking at you!)

Shivaay himself is a curious fella: a daredevil thrill-seeker who leaps off cliffs and mountains, routinely refers to himself in the third person, and appears to talk only in punchlines. Despite the shallow writing, Devgan infuses the character with genuine humanity and makes his pain at being separated from his child fully palpable. He's equally convincing in superhero' mode, flying into a mad rage when provoked, landing punches and kicks at the speed of lightning, even driving without foot on pedal, and surviving both bullets and stabbings.

What Ajay Devgan the star deserved, was a sharper director and a better script. In the end, there's little else to Shivaay than the eye-watering locations (both in the Himalayas and in Bulgaria), and occasionally poignant moments between Devgan and the little girl who plays his daughter. Everything else is noise. Way too much noise.

I'm going with two out of five.
