Well, saying it upfront that he prefers star kids doesn't make it right though. This is because he knows he will not face real flak for it, so he says it with impunity.
He likes riding on success and not really giving people a chance. I enjoy his interviews and like hearing him speak, but he is stuck on the Kareena Kapoor brand of beauty (since people think she is good-looking). He says he didn't fit in when he was a kid and was lonely and seems like it is the same lonely kid who is after the approval of the popular kids. He is shallow in this respect. He didn't give someone like Ranveer or Anushka a chance till they became successful, 'cause he adheres to the status quo and doesn't like rocking the boat.
KJo is only this exacting when it comes to non-industry actors and their looks. If he thinks only stunning people should be in BW, I wonder why he was so at ease with Kajol and now actors like Alia and Varun.
Fair point. No, it doesn't make it right. I do entirely agree with you that he's elitist and promotes nepotism. However, he's always been so open and frank about it that I appreciate it. Contrary to that entire fake industry, he does come across as someone who's always vouching for people once he gets past his initial judgement of them. Maybe he is faking it extremely well, but does he really have to? Why give Anushka the lead in his directional venture otherwise? Somehow, to me, that comes across more as honest than shallow. Also, the look in his eyes on the BTS is one of pure admiration when the actors are enacting their part. I admire people who can get past their initial judgement and root for people, perhaps that's why I don't find him 'shallow'.
Also, Karan has always been someone who usually takes insults and stereotyping thrown at him very sportingly and hardly keeps grudges. He's waited patiently for Aishwariya to be in his movies, never rebuked Kajol/Kareena for rejecting all those movies. He doesn't lack depth/sentiments. He isn't in a position where he 'has to' take Anushka into consideration, or even consider her for his movie. He has his favorites all lined up. Yet he did. And he admitted not liking her at some point of time on her face and on camera. I think it takes guts to do that in this industry. Even more guts, to doing a 180 degrees turn and admitting he was wrong about her. Or probably I just appreciate it 'cause I've hardly seen that kind of honesty from all those diplomatic, fake loving industry people.
The one point which I would agree upon, probably would be where he's shallow in terms of looks over personalities. But then, aren't we all in some regards in the beginning of meeting people? How many girls would let a haggard looking man hit on them over a suit wearing, key holding guy? How many guys would employ a 25 year old gorgeous secretary over a 45 year old messy mother of two? You do the maths. Okay, that is stretching it to the extreme perhaps, but I'm just trying to make a point.
P.S. - Kuddos at the "(since people think she's good looking)" addition. I've never found her particularly special. But then, that might entirely be because I do tend to be put off by nasty personalities. Attitude first, looks later. 😆
