I love both Asha and Lata songs and used to always get confused when asked to choose one of them. Then I asked myself whose songs between the two, have been the absolute essential part of my growing up, my life and my emotions in general... and the answer got clear - Lata.

Many say that Asha is better because of her versatility as she can sings items numbers, cabaret, devotional, Ghazals, and romantic songs with equal ease... But I think sensuous songs were asha's forte. Even Lata had sung a few very sensuous songs like " aa jaane jaan" "Jalta hai badan" but in her own style... and they were superb too.

I remember an interview of Asha where she recollected here memories about Umrao jaan. She said that Khyyam (the music director) asked her to sing two notes lower for the song. She was very reluctant to do so as she thought it would not suit her style but Khyyam convinced her by saying that she sing in both versions and take Ma Saraswati's oath that she would honestly select whichever version was better. No need to say that the "two notes lower" version was accepted as better by even Asha Ji and was finalized for the album. What I want to say is that in a few earlier songs of Asha also I felt that if she had sung a few notes lower it would have sounded much better. Asha evolved a lot during her music journey and a lot of that credit can be given to the influence of music directors like R.D. Burman, Khyyam, and O.P. Nayyar on her singing styles.

Whereas, Lata was 'pakki' from the beginning itself. I remember a similar, and rather funny anecdote involving bade Ghulam Ali Khan who while listening to the song "ye Zindagi usi ki hai" from Anarkali commented - "Kambakht kahin besuri nahi hoti" hinting at how even classical legends found her perfection enviable (not in a serious way but in an admiring way)

Lata's voice was sweeter .

Asha added playfulness in numbers like " o mere Sona Sona" and "daiya yeh mein Kaha aa pasi"

So both for different reasons..

Lata has sung Chadti Jawani, which was amazing.

I prefer Lata by far.

They were playing "Naya Daur" songs on ZeeTv yesterday, and I coudn't believe it was Asha ji's voice, it was so different than usual, so nobody can beat her on versatility...

I thought thank God for OP Nayyar, for daring to break the monopoly... He rarely used Lata which is why we got so many great Asha ji songs

Lata ji was accused of monopolizing Hindi playback scene without letting anyone in so I say thank god for Asha and Music directors like OP Nayyar and RD Burnan for giving Asha ji such beautiful songs...

As great as the sisters were I wish there were atleast few more singers in the industry

I've heard about the monopolising accusations, too, but then the only reason that music directors got her to sing again and again in their songs was because she is supremely talented. If she hadn't been good, they wouldn't have. Simple as that.
