Bollywood Reacts To Ban On Surrogacy In India

We asked two of Bollywood's gay filmmakers on what they think of the ban on commercial surrogacy in India and this is what they had to say.

I've mixed reactions to this. I feel in a democracy single or gay people should not be discriminated against regarding the right to parenthood .But at the same time I think couples or single individuals desirous of a child should rather adopt . But then everyone should have a choice to decide how they wish to become parents.

I'm glad that the government at least uttered the word homosexual'. Till recently the word never came out' of politicians' mouths. Remember the PM's condolence tweet on the Orlando shooting? At least here, Sushma Swaraj has acknowledged the community. Heartening to know that they know of its existence. And why are we surprised about being refused the right to surrogate parenthood? As if being deemed criminal is a less cruel stand by our government!

What's wrong with surrogacy? Personally, I would rather adopt, but to each his/her own. At the end of the day, it's the decision of the parents.

The intention is noble, to stop exploitation of women and to stop abandonment of babies.

But I am not convinced about keeping gay couples away from this. I mean, come on! They cannot reproduce. At least let them have kids through surrogacy. Adoption is another good option, but the choice should rest on the couple.

Tusshar Kapoor seriously missed by a whisker here. He got lucky!

Another case where government poking their nose where they shouldn't be poking. Yesterday I also read they are involving the PM to hunt down some missing tiger.
Priorities.

It's actually a much needed law considering the baffling number of exploitation cases that came up. It's easy to dissuade govt. laws but this one has some merit. Agree on homosexual couples but then there first step is to decriminalize it.

I think single men or women are still allowed , there are loads of caveats there.

Overall this is a much needed law which protects even the woman whose womb is used but Sushma could have avoided commented about the celebs- bad taste.

Shouldn't the focus be on preventing the exploitation rather than banning surrogacy?

I know at least 6 people who have done surrogacy in India. It actually made thr life of that girl a lot better and she was duly compensated and it was all professional. When government charges so much for surrogacy fees and visa they should rather open an insurance for such victims. That would be the wise thing to do to address the issues raised by you. Not some knee jerk reaction and blanket ban.
