Songs on All Tranportation
Akshay Kumar starrer Rustom takes off giving you high retro feels. His entry scene, stepping out in the crisp Navy uniform is classy and calls for whistles. The film credits and Rustom's love story with Cynthia (Ileana) is portrayed through the popular romantic track Tere Sang Yaara. Ileana is a delight to watch with all her make-up unlike Esha Gupta who gets on your nerves from the word go.
The story is as we know, an extra marital affair, a murder and now a jury trial.
Kumud Mishra as a newspaper owner and Pavan Malhotra as investigating officer on the case are a perfect fit for their roles.
The pace is decent enough for a first half but a terrible background score could kill you enough to say I confess' instead of Rustom.
Interrogation scene is captured well. Mostly, there are long shots which could be slightly irritating if it continues further.
Pre-interval, we see Rustome pleading not guilty'.
What's the story behind Cynthia's extra-marital affair? What Navy secrets is Rustom hiding?
Wait for the second half review!
KRK@kamaalrkhanFollowDirector Tinu sir you are really very talented n you have proved it again with #Rustom that You can never go wrong whatever star cast is!
Rustom review by critics
Sneha Francis from Emirates 247: After Special 26', and Baby', this is possibly Akshay's most honest act. Even the courtroom sequences are handled with finesse. The foundation of any credible courtroom drama lies in its writing, which Vipul offers to Rustom', but there are those rare moments of heightened theatrics, which creep in and damage Rustom'. Yet, it deserves credit for pitching a story on a case that historically altered the Indian judiciary system.

Manjusha Radhakrishnan from Gulf News: Watch this film if you want to see Kumar in all his noble glory. If you look carefully, perhaps a halo might even emerge from this honourable man. But if you are anything like me, this film would have benefitted hugely from exploring the cracks in his relationships.

Well, It's Rustom all the way. The reviews from UAE critics have been positive and its seems that Akshay will make a hat-trick of 100 crores grossers with Rustom. You can bookmark this page as we will update it with more critics reviews as soon as they are out.
TERRIFIC report of #Rustom is coming from the press shows being held all over.
There's something strangely inspiring about men in uniform.
They stand for honesty, truth and bravery.
So, when one of them willingly walks on the wrong side of the law, it makes for an intriguing story.
One that director Tinu Suresh Desai cleverly weaves into a Bollywood courtroom drama.
However, he doesn't make it a faithful copy. Instead, he borrows notes from the controversial Nanavati case (1950s), where a jury had pronounced a naval officer "not guilty" despite him murdering his wife's lover, and employs writer Vipul K Rawal to inject a highly explosive conspiracy theory into the screenplay.
Thus, elevating Rustom' into something more than regular Bollywood fare.
The attention to detail is incredible, with vintage costumes and sets adding depth and authenticity to a story that unfolds in the 1950s. While some graphics appear inferior, even dodgy, those minor flaws can be forgiven.
Vipul even creates some colourful characters, who capture the pulse of the 1950s. It's the overzealous newspaper boy deploying drama and sensational tidbits to sell papers, or the lanky fellow selling courtroom seats for a premium, who capture the pulse of those times. Even the podgy editor who strongly believes the fight is between communities, and nothing else, is deftly designed and portrayed.
Rustom', nevertheless, would've benefitted by a tauter edit. Its pace dips randomly, over songs and lengthy flashbacks, thus ruining its impact.
But, much of the damage is salvaged by the striking performances. Akshay Kumar thankfully abandons his flamboyant Bollywood hero moves and muscle flexing urges to lend integrity and intensity to the celebrated naval officer. He's calm, understated even, only investing in his expressions to explore what prompted an officer to pull the trigger.
After Special 26', and Baby', this is possibly Akshay's most honest act. Even the courtroom sequences are handled with finesse.
If we had a bone to pick, it's his decision to stay in uniform throughout, forcing us to question if the pristine white set ever gets washed, considering it never appears soiled over the course of the legal tug-of-war.
Illeana D'Cruz handles deceit and remorse elegantly. Despite being in the wrong, she lends Cynthia immense dignity. Esha Gupta, however, is unable to hold her own as the wounded sister. She rolls her eyes, pouts her red lips, and reduces Ms Makija into a mere stereotype.
Fortunately, Rustom' showcases some incredible talent for its supporting parts with Pavan Malhotra as the diligent cop, Sachin Khedekar as the reliably vicious lawyer, Usha Nadkarni as the loud-mouthed maid and Kumud Mishra as the conniving scribe.
The foundation of any credible courtroom drama lies in its writing, which Vipul offers to Rustom', but there are those rare moments of heightened theatrics, which creep in and damage Rustom'. Yet, it deserves credit for pitching a story on a case that historically altered the Indian judiciary system.
Rustom is a fictionalised version of what happened in the Nanavati case way back in the '50s. If you have ever followed the case, you will know that Akshay Kumar plays a Naval officer who has been accused of killing his wife's paramour. The film is directed by Tinu Suresh Desai, who previously made 1920: London. A really scary thought. However, Akshay Kumar has rarely put a foot wrong in the past few months when it comes to his movies. Why, I even liked Housefull 3, judge all you want. So that's why I had high hopes for Rustom. And by the time the interval has come up, there has been no dent in those hopes.

Apart from a couple of speed-braking songs, Rustom gets to the point straightaway. CDR Rustom Pavri returns home early after a mission to find his wife's affair. Anguished at first, he borrows a gun from the naval base, goes to the lover's house and shoots him down. He later goes to the police station to surrender himself. The first half sets up the murder and Pavri's arrest, as well as why the situation even happened. The film moves at a decent pace, though the songs and certain romantic portions could have been trimmed. The makers have done their best to do justice to that era, sometimes shoving memorabilia straight to our faces. Akshay Kumar is, as always, excellent as the man guilty of the murder but not of the crime. Ileana looks lovely, but its hard to sympathise with her character.
Director Neeraj Pandey has given us delicious cinematic treats in the form of A Wednesday, Special 26 and Baby. Naturally expectations from his latest outing Rustom starring Akshay Kumar and Ileana D'Cruz in the lead roles were sky high. Akki's Rustom seems delicious for those who thrive on thrills and suspense. Akshay plays the character of Commander Rustom Pavri, Indian Navy, a very high ranking official who is known for his meticulousness. The devoted patriot but he turns into a unsympathetic lover when he finds out that his ladylove (played by Ileana D'Cruz) is cheating on him with other man.(ALSO READ: Rustom vs Mohenjo Daro: Is Hrithik Roshan being sidelined by Bollywood? Or is Akshay Kumar not confident of Rustom, so gathering support?)
Our correspondent Shweta Parande is attending the press show of the movie. She sent her verdict from the thereat right after the interval. Here's what Shweta had to say about the movie. "Akshay Kumar and Ileana are both good. The movie is getting more gripping post interval. It takes you back in time with the sets and production values. Director Tinu Suresh Desai has done a good job for a debut film. Editing is also crisp. Pavan Malhotra as the cop Vincent Lobo is perfect. Wait for the full review of Rustom...it will surely beat Mohenjo Daro in terms of audience interest and appreciation," opines Shweta.
Looks like the film is really intriguing and interesting. How the story will unfold in the second half will only decide the fate of the film. For the full review of Akshay Kumar starrer Rustom watch this space
