Salman Khan landed himself in a controversy for his remark that he felt like a "raped woman" after one gruelling shoot for his upcoming "Sultan" film.

Salman Khan landed himself in a controversy for his remark that he felt like a "raped woman" after one gruelling shoot for his upcoming "Sultan" film, sparking demands today for an apology from the Bollywood star.

The National Commission for Women(NCW) took suo motu cognisance of the "insensitive" remark by the 50-year-old superstar and shot off a letter to him asking for his explanation in seven days failing which he will be summoned.

Women activists also staged protests outside Salman's Bandra residence in Mumbai. As political parties, social media users and the NCW pressed for an apology from the actor, Salman's scriptwriter- father Salim Khan apologised on behalf of his son, admitting that his comments were "wrong".

Khan, who underwent rigorous training for the wrestling film, was heard saying during his group interview with journalists that after shooting one particular scene he used to feel like a "raped woman". The film is due for release on July 6.

"While shooting, during those six hours, there'd be so much of lifting and thrusting on the ground involved. That was tough for me because if I was lifting, I'd have to lift the same 120-kilo guy 10 times for 10 different angles. And likewise, get thrown that many times on the ground.

"This act is not repeated that many times in the real fights in the ring. When I used to walk out of the ring, after the shoot, I used to feel like a raped woman walking out..." Salman hastened to add, "I don't think I should have...", suggesting he should not have made such a comparison.

Reacting on his son's behalf, Salim said, "Undoubtedly what Salman said is wrong, the simili (sic), example and the context. The intention was not wrong.

"Nevertheless I apologise on behalf of his family, his fans & friends. Forgiveness is to pardon the unpardonable or it is no virtue at all. To err is human, to forgive divine.

Today on Intl Yoga Day, lets not run our shops on this mistake."

Another person to come out in Salman's defence was his "Yuvraaj" director Subhash Ghai, who claimed the actor's comments were misrepresented. Though Salman made the comments in English, Ghai also claimed it was a "mistranslation". Ghai also blamed it on the actor's "poor English" and said he was "just a child". "It is very disgusting translation by someone. He just said one thing that it is a human agony he went through. The deepest human agony is when a woman is raped. He was talking about a metaphor. "He is just a child and I know he respects women like anything."

NCW Chief Lalitha Kumaramangalam said Salman should give a public apology. Kumaramangalam said if the actor did not give a satisfactory response, he would have to appear before the commission.

BJP spokesperson Shaina NC asked Salman to apologise for his comments. "Salman Khan should apologise. It might be a slip of tongue. There is no rationale to it. Whatever the logic, Salman should apologise for the statement. The analogy was wrong," Shaina said.

Shiv Sena called the actor's comments "callous" and demanded an apology from him. "He needs to apologise for making such a callous comments... We criticise it and feel he should apologise," said party leader Manisha Kayande.

Salman has also faced criticism from Nirbhaya's mother, who said she was hurt by his remarks. "He should apologise... I was hurt by his comments. If someone like Salman Khan gives this statement, what will be its impact on our society. I don't know why he said so, but whatever he said was wrong," she said. "He must have said that in a joking mood but ask the parents of such victims?"

Twitter users were also horrified by the actor's anology and called him out for being "ridiculous".

"Wow..@BeingSalmanKhan compared his shooting schedule for #Sultan to him feeling like a raped woman...is he for real?? #ridiculous #epicfail," wrote a Twitter user. "I know Salman Khan has fans. But if his female fans are ok with his 'I felt like a raped woman' then I've just lost faith in the world," another wrote. A girl wrote, "How does Salman Khan have fans? I'm very curious to know. And if he continues to have female fans after this then I fear for this world!" "kindly remove humanitarian from your bio @BeingSalmanKhan. There cannot be anything more inhuman than using raped woman analogy. SHAME," said a user.

"By his Raped Woman statement Salman Khan has shown his mindset. Will film fraternity come out to oppose him? Shame on you Salman," wrote another.

Whatever he says, does, however disgusting ,appalling or illegal is forgotten by the people. He is minting money , he is living his life king size without any repercussions. He pays his way out of jail. He has abused his girlfriends in past, he might continue it to this day. What will a half assed apology do if his mentality hasn't changed in 30yrs.

This NCW has no better work? There are women being trafficked from drought areas of Maharastra and being sold to prostitution and these women are using Bhai's 2Rs comment for publicity. Why not use your resources for something good ?
Salman's comment is appalling but these women should make a strong statement on TV and move on to other important jobs than running after Bhai

It just proves that we as society are not taking rape as serious issue. I raped the replay button, I raped the song, etc is being said by youth without realising that what rape actually is. You are physically and emotionally scared for life. There needs to be strict law made against rape. What can explain the judgement in Nirbhaya's case where the f**king accused is being helped to survive. His face is blurred to protect his identity. But a rape victim's identity is being showed to the world so that people can feel pity on them.
Forget about Salman, its a matter of time the incident will be forgotten. I do expect an apology from SK regarding his statement. But as a society now that we have milked this controversy so much how about actually taking action against a heinous crime like rape which is happening in our country 24*7. How about the women activists and political parties who are raising their voice continue doing so until rape victims are promised 100% justice. Punish the criminals who rape and stop victimising the victims. Let there be no another Nirbhaya. That will be the biggest victory.

Women activists question Salman Khan's mentality post 'raped woman' remark

They have also demanded an apology from the actor, saying that he should think before he speaks

With the social media going berserk over Salman Khan comparing himself to a 'raped woman' in a recent interview, the women activists on Tuesday demanded an apology from the Bollywood star and said that he should think before he speaks as the people look up to him for the so called good deeds he does on screen.

"How can somebody make such a statement in such a casual manner as far as women dignity is concerned? I am appalled at the mentality of the star. He is a star. People look up to him for the so called good deeds he does on screen," former National Commission for Women (NCW) member Shamina Shafiq told the media.

"I think he should apologise. He should take back his statement. This is not expected from any public figure for that matter," she said.

Shafiq also questioned the actor's mindset.

"I know 'Being human', his NGO is doing some wonderful, incredible work but what is the use of such good work if the person who is behind the entire work is having such kind of a mentality about a woman's condition which goes through after a physical assault," she added.

However, women activist Kavita Krishnan denied the need for an apology and called for instrospection.

"After such an upsurge of remarks people tend to say, 'Oh! I am very sorry because I didn't mean to hurt anyone'. I think that kind of apology is fairly meaningless and there is no point in that," Krishnan said.

She said it is important to remember that the actor has said this not because he is 'especially insensitive' as Salman Khan, the celebrity, but because the Indian culture in general is terribly insensitive and such rape jokes and rape analogies have become very common.

"We need to get away from the easy position of mocking and slamming Salman Khan and start questioning ourselves and the kind of insensitive jokes about domestic violence or rape or other forms of gendered violence," she added.

In a recent interview, the actor reportedly made a shocking statement that has landed him in a soup.

During his interaction with an entertainment website, Salman was asked about his experience of playing a wrestler in his upcoming film Sultan and he said that he felt like a "raped woman".

"I'd have to lift the same 120-kilo guy 10 times for 10 different angles. And likewise, get thrown that many times on the ground. This act is not repeated that many times in the real fights in the ring. When I used to walk out of the ring, after the shoot, I used to feel like a raped woman. I couldn't walk straight. I would eat and then, head right back to training. That couldn't stop," he said.

"He has completely gone out of line to disrespect and disregard the condition of a rape victim by such an insensitive remark," said Madhu Garg, AIDWA state president. "He should apologize to all women. No one can even imagine the pain and trauma a rape victim undergoes, let alone compare it to any level of a tough film sequence," added Malti.

The actor had been reported to have said that when he walked out of the ring, it used to be actually like a raped woman walking out. For the remark the National Commission for Women also demanded an apology from the actor failing which it said he would be issued summons.
