Aamir Khan Wants 'Dangal' To Be About Women Empowerment And Not Just Wrestling

Post the success of Salman Khan's latest release Sultan, in which the superstar had played a wrestler from Haryana, Aamir Khan, who too will be seen playing a Haryanvi wrestler in his upcoming film Dangal, has now decided to change his marketing strategy for the film.

Sources attached to the film claim that Aamir recently held a meeting with his creative team and asked them to come up with a marketing strategy wherein the focus is more on women empowerment than wrestling. Dangal is the story of Mahavir Singh Phogat, a wrestler-turned-coach, who trained his daughters in the sport and Aamir doesn't want Dangal to be promoted as a hero-centric film.

Dangal is slated to release this Christmas.

Dangal: Aamir's marketing plan to keep his movie different from Salman's Sultan'

IIt seems superstar Aamir Khan is leaving no stone unturned to make his upcoming Dangal' a huge hit. And his close friend Salman Khan's Sultan' might have to do something with it.

If media reports are to be believed, Aamir is brainstorming to change the marketing strategy of the movie. Reportedly, Aamir is thinking of making the movie's promotions revolve around women empowerment and not wrestling.

Reportedly, Aamir feels that Sultan' has talked about wrestling a lot and it is time for him to give another angle to his movie.

It is also being suggested that this is the reason that Aamir shot the video with his daughters, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra, who play Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari respectively. And probably this is why four daughters of on screen Aamir were seen in the second poster of the movie. The caption of the poster read, Mhaari chhoriyan chhoro se kam hai ke'. (Are daughters any lesser than boys?)"

Dangal' is the reel adaptation of life of Mahavir Singh Phogat, a Haryana wrestler who made his life motto to make his daughters world renowned wrestlers. He fought against all odds to ensure his daughters live the life they want to. In the movie, actress Sakshi Tanwar plays the role of Aamir's wife.

Meet Ryan Fernando, the celebrity sports nutritionist who helped Aamir Khan get his 'Dangal' body

POULOMI DAS | JUL 28, 2016, 05.15 PM

Last month when Aamir Khan shared a picture on social media that showed the Bollywood perfectionist holding dumbbells, it immediately took the internet by storm. People were finding it hard to believe how a 51-year-old managed to attain such an unbelievably jacked-up physique.

This was the actor's look for his upcoming movie, Dangal , in which he essays the role of Indian wrestler Mahaveer Phogat.

Granted, this is not the first time that Khan has undergone a physical makeover for a movie- the actor had gotten eight-pack abs for Ghajini back in 2008, but anyone who has seen the picture will tell you- this is certainly Khan's most jaw-dropping transformation till date.

The biggest question on everyone's minds was naturally unanimous- How did Khan do it?

For starters, Khan worked with Ryan Fernando, an award winning celebrity sports nutritionist whose clients include two-times Olympics medalist wrestler Sushil Kumar , cricketers Robin Uthappa, Shikhar Dhawan and Harbhajan Singh among others.

To help Khan attain a professional wrestler-like physique, Fernando introduced the actor to nutrigenomics- the scientific study of the interaction of nutrition and genies.

You'll be surprised to know the ampunt of science involved behind this insane look.

With the help of nutrigenomics, it is possible to analyse the reaction of our bodies to a lack of something or the excess of something in our body and the result it will bring about.

India has only five laboratories in the country that undertake sequencing of the DNA and even then testing all genes- about 20,000-25,000 of them can be a rather expensive affair.

"To test something as simple as whether you are allergic to gluten it is as low as Rs 5,000, but if you want to do the whole gamut like Aamir Khan did, it will cost you closer to about Rs 1 lakh, which would analyse everything related to food and nutrition," revealed Fernando in an interview with Factordaily .

As for Khan, the test resulted in him having to balance out his anti-oxidants. It showed that he should be avoiding refined carbohydrates as it may result in his cholesterol and triglycerides going up- all because there is a certain gene that might not be working well.

Khan had to undergo rigorous workout sessions to gain 93 kgs from a weight of 68 kgs in six months- for his role of the ageing wrestler during the first phase of Dangal's shoots. Later, he also had a weight loss target of 25 kgs before he could begin shooting for the next phase.

After Wrestling Taboos, Haryana Girls Rewrite Bollywood Scripts

Affan Yesvi
Today, 36 minutes ago

Is Bollywood driving the Haryana girls? Or are Haryana girls rewriting the script, making Bollywood take note and bow?

Vinesh Phogat has gained recognition as one of the most talented Indian women wrestlers. Not yet 22, she has notched gold and silver at international wrestling championships. Vinesh recently told a national daily:

I don't have time for shayads (maybe's) in my life. If you want to go ahead, go. Or else get out of my way.

Her mantra for life:

I like being independent. I like being free.
Haryanvi Ladies Ruling Bollywood

By year-end, we will see the reel version of Vinesh Phogat, the spunky freestyle wrestler, in Aamir Khan-starrer Dangal.

Dangal is not the only Bollywood magnum opus inspired by the zestful girls of Haryana.

Komal Chautala, the little Haryanvi dynamite, valiantly stood her own in the 2007 hit, Chak De India.

Datto, the sportswoman from Haryana, played by Kangana Ranaut was the feisty sportswoman who held her own against the lovable glamdoll-cum-melodrama queen Tanuja Trivedi in Tanu Weds Manu Returns.

In the movie, Datto famously introduced herself as "Kusum Sangwan. National level ki athlete su, zila Jhajjar (I am a national-level athlete from district Jhajjar)."

More recently, we have seen Anushka Sharma's Aarfa Hussain in Sultan, speaking up for women's empowerment. Aarfa is a proud national-level wrestler nursing an Olympic dream. She tells the unemployed Sultan (Salman Khan) wooing her:

Yeh joh tumhari society hai na... is mein aaj bhi ladkiyan ghunghat ke peeche janam leve hai aur wahin mar jaave hai (In our society, girls are born behind a veil and die behind a veil).Selfie Interview with Wrestlers Vinesh, Babita and Sakshi

Cut to Real Life

In an interview in 2014, Olympian wrestler Geeta Phogat explained why girls from the rural heartland of Haryana are now taking the sports route to glory. She said that being a sportsperson helped her get away from the "bhed bhav" (discrimination) of Haryana.

Sports, Geeta said, gave her confidence and self-respect, and enabled her to speak her mind.

Young girls in Haryana should speak their mind and not be afraid to challenge the system. Unhe awaz uthani chahiye (they must raise their voice).
Geeta Phogat, Indian Wrestler

At age 22, Geeta became the first female wrestler to win India's first gold medal in women's wrestling in the 55 kg freestyle category at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Her sister Babita Kumari won the silver in the 51kg category.

Geeta is also the first Indian woman wrestler to have qualified for the Olympics.

Fighting, Beating Taboos

In Sultan, audience saw Aarfa Hussain wrestling with boys. This remarkable scene, where a girl takes on a boy in kushti, isn't a fictional Bollywood construct.

About 15 years ago, Geeta Phogat was the only girl in her region to get serious about wrestling. Since there was no other girl who pursued wrestling, she had to grapple with boys her age for practice.

When Geeta sparred with boys, the village laughed at her. Everyone thought her father Mahavir Singh Phogat had lost his mind.

In Dangal, to be released in December, superstar Aamir Khan will play Mahavir Singh, the wrestler who battled the rigid taboos of Haryana to train his girls in the sport.

Overturning Akhara's Masculine Hierarchy

The deeply conservative Haryana gives us strange contradictions. Geeta is not the only woman wrestler to have competed with men.

Coming a decade after Geeta is Divya Kakran, also a Haryana girl. In the dangals (wrestling bouts) of north India, Divya has been challenging boys to wrestling bouts since 2010, when she was 12.

Divya, now 18, challenges boys to a match and leaves them pinned to the ground. She overturns the masculine hierarchy of the akhara every time she steps into the kushti ring and goes for gold.

The Indian Express profiled Divya in its Sunday magazine cover story in December 2015.

Over the last five years, the report said, dozens of hand-held videos of Divya fighting boys have been uploaded onto YouTube. They are shot from obscure village dangals across the north Indian heartland " Karari near Jhansi in UP, Khedi Pul in Faridabad, Haryana, Banhore in Jammu, Ghumarmi in Himachal Pradesh.

All end with a cry of Chittt!' " her male opponent sprawled on the ground, his shoulders flat against the earth. Most of the videos end here, at the moment of triumph.

Divya is among the most promising Indian junior wrestlers. She has added medals to her tally at the Asian Juniors, the National Games, and the Asian Cadet championships in Delhi in June 2015, where she was India's solitary gold medalist.

She is confident that one day she will be an Olympian. She continues to compete at the dangals and kushti melas across north India. With the various medals that she has won, she now brings star power to the kushti ring.

Perhaps one day Bollywood will make a movie on her too.
