Udta Punjab Review: It Is The Most Original & Jolting Film Since Rang De Basanti!

18th June 2016
37

Udta Punjab is a work of contemporary art so audaciously unprecedented in its vision and execution of a subject that is topical and timeless , you wonder if Bollywood, as we love and hate it, is finally growing up.

On the other hand lest we forget, filmmakers in the past like Bimal Roy, Guru Dutt and Gulzar constantly prodded and pushed mainstream Hindi cinema into areas of darkness, not fearful of the unlit interiors of the human heart.

Abhishek Choubey takes forward to an altogether new high , the politically empowered human drama of BimalRoy's Do Bigha Zameen(the migrant's plight in the city ,as played out by Alia Bhatt's character) and GulzarMaachis(Punjab, bloodied battered and wounded, no more romanticized ).

I use the term high' quite deliberately. At least one of the film's four protagonists , the subversive rock star Tommy Singh is zonked out of his mind most of the time.So is the hauntingly persecuted Bihari migrant Pinky, the reluctant drug addict pumping her veins with dubious drugs to numb herself against constant violation.

Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt are born again as they play the two traumatized characters (at one point he stares at his ravaged reflection in a toilet bowl, she bawls her messed-up head into a well) journeying from the opposite directions of the moral scale .And yet their pained lives converge at one point in a strange unexpected and life-changing encounter. Both actors bleed brilliancy into their roles, bringing to the screen an electrifying authenticity with their sheer understanding of the complexities that define the drug politics of Punjab.

No actor in Udta Punjab plays his or her part in isolation. Everyone contributes persuasively and comprehensively to the director's grand design whereby "reality" is transmuted into a kind of cinematic language which we have never experienced before. And I don't mean the profane dialogues, of which there is no dearth.Sure, the characters barring Kareena Kapoor Khan's doctor Preet Sahani who is immunized against the filth of moral debasement, talk dirty. Somehow their language is so much in keeping with their characters, we stop flinching to their ma-bahenfussilade 15 minutes into the film.

There is so much to appreciate in this amazing film, the unparliamentary language becomes the least of the take-aways. Specially impressive are the Punjab locations and the way they are shot and fitted in with incidental music and sounds that appear to demolish and break down the distance between the director's vision and the audiences' perception. Meghna Sen's editing is razor-sharp. It allows the depraved disoriented people in Choubey's film to open up their minds and emotions just enough for us to get a vivid glimpse into their troubled lives .

Though the playing-time clocks at 2 hours, the burden of the duration is never felt by audience.

This time, the creator of the chaotic world of moral compromises takes full responsibility for his actions. DirectorAbhishek Choubey looks at the wound-up characters in all their emotional nakedness, staring at their exposed lived without pity anger or revulsion.

For the audience it is hard to look away from the realm of brutal self-interest built around the renegade characters. It's specially heartbreaking to see what the script has in store of Alia Bhatt's character. But then , this is no country for the week and infirm. Udta Punjab is not only about Punjab and its drugged youth. It is also communicates with furious fluency a far-reaching statement on our wounded civilization which thrives on inequality, injustice and exploitation.

The complete breakdown of the moral order and the subversion of law and order, are issues that govern the characters' lives, twisting and changing their destiny in cruel ways.

Amongst all the devastation and decimation of humanism Udta Punjab gives us flash-moments of redemption and enlightenment. For the debauched rock star Tommy Singh it comes when thrown into jail for his obscene antics. There,he meets his fans ,one of whom has just killed his mother when she refuses him money for drugs. The incident awakens Tommy's conscience . He is ready for the change.

For the corrupt cop Sartaj Singh(played with persuasive sardonicism by Diljit Dosanjh) the moment of awakening comes when he meets the spiritually and well, just, literally beautiful Dr Preet Sahani. Kareena is perfectly cast in the part and so at home playing the seductive saviour-angel that when Diljit looks at her adoringly and says she is perfect, we know exactly what he means.

Two love stories , one redemptive the other tragic, grow out of the desperate crisis in the plot, leading the screenplay through a maze of haunting and hilarious incidents that leave us exhilarated and exhausted.

Udta Punjab is replete with encounters where strangers meet and strike up a rapport that changes their lives. Understandably this is a film that changes the audiences' life too. No sensitive rational viewer can come away from this experience without in some way feeling transformed.

Feral Frenetic, riveting, hypnotic, hallucinogenic and altogether incredible we've never seen anything quite like Udta Punjab before.

Udta Punjab had a good first day with 10 crore nett which is the fifth best opening day of the year after Fan, Housefull 3, Baaghi and Airlift. In Delhi city and East Punjab it recorded the second highest opening day after Fan. The collections in Delhi city were better than Housefull 3 though the figures for the whole of Delhi / UP circuit were lower. The figures in East Punjab alone were best of the year.

The collections outside of North ranged from good to average barring Gujarat / Saurashtra which was poor. The performance of the Gujarat area was a lag on Mumbai circuit which collected around 2.50 crore nett which is the same figure as Delhi /UP.

Normally it would be easy to say the film will improve on Saturday for this type of film as that is when the target audience at high end multiplexes comes out but problem here is that normally films like this don't put up double digit numbers on day one. There is potential for growth in many areas but that will depend on how the word of mouth is in these areas.

UDTA PUNJAB

Cast: Diljit Dosanjh, Kareena Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt

Director: Abhishek Chaubey

Rating: Four-and-a-half stars

OPIUM FOR THE MASSES

Discus throwers come in handy when smuggling drugs across the border. Udta Punjab begins with three kilos of heroin being thrown into India by a Pakistani with obvious athletic credentials. This is not a spoiler. If you want one, read the newspapers of the past few years. Reporters have cried themselves hoarse over a steady supply of drugs from Pakistan. Their effect on Punjab's youth has also been well documented. The collusion of policemen and politicians is an ill-kept secret. Even hardened journalists will confess that Punjab's drug crisis is too tangled to be explained by a single narrative. Director Abhishek Chaubey and co-writer Sudip Sharma, however, have produced a screenplay that hits the nail right on the head. Though layered, the film doesn't confuse. It decodes.

Movies inspired by news headlines can sometimes be subservient to the reality they hope to reveal. The line between factual documentary and compelling fiction is a thin one, but Chaubey navigates that tightrope with the nonchalance of a high-wire walker. There are four storylines which define Udta, each belonging to an individual protagonist. These narratives intersect, diverge and meet again. The jump from one character to the other, though, is never jarring. Inventive editing by Megha Sen makes sure of that. Much like the system' it assaults, the film has a flow that's seamless.

Kareena Kapoor has been deglamourised in Udta Punjab while Diljit Dosanjh has an innocence that seems entirely sincere

Star of Punjabi hits such as Jatt and Juliet and Ambarsariya, Dijit Dosanjh makes his Bollywood debut with an assuredness and innocence that seems entirely sincere. The actor plays the police officer Sartaj Singh, who's initially seen reaping a fair few benefits in a state that is fast growing to resemble lawless Mexico. It is with some glee that he profits from narcotics he confiscates. But once Doctor Preet Sahani (Kareena Kapoor) shakes Sartaj out of his apathy, Dosanjh becomes the kind of hero a heartbreaking film like Udta sorely needs. Kapoor herself has been deglamourised enough to make you think of those stellar performances in films likeOmkara and Dev. Her zeal to rid Punjab of drugs is not lofty, her tone never preachy. Her compassion is felt and her dealings with Sartaj only tender.

Tommy may corrupt the youth, but Shahid Kapoor's portrayal of the character is convincing in its caution

Playing pop star and self-styled rock god Tommy Singh, Shahid Kapoor brings to Udta a comic relief that hinges not on his wit but the lack of it. A cocaine addict, Tommy at one point wakes up on the floor of his bathroom, looks at his reflection in the toilet bowl and shouts, "Who is the Gabru? I am the Gabru." He is promptly arrested by Sartaj, who'd been told by a delightfully loyal Satish Kaushik that Tommy was in London. This comedy of errors gives Kapoor an arch to his character, one that he doesn't break. Tommy may corrupt the youth, but Kapoor's performance is convincing in its caution.

Alia Bhatt demonstrates a vulnerability and resilience that demands your empathy

Though Udta is not an obviously violent film, it commits a strange violence upon its viewer. Alia Bhatt, who is unrecognisable as a Bihari migrant, makes you feel a pain that's palpable. Subjected to torture and heroin, Bhatt demonstrates a vulnerability and resilience that forces you to soon cross that line from distant sympathy to a piercing empathy. When she tells Tommy of her trials in Punjab and describes the tribulations of addiction, he asks, "Chhor kyun nahin deti?" She replies, "Punjab ya sui?" The question is simple but achingly poignant. Bhatt is never named in the film. Given the lot of migrant farmhands in India, this lack of a name only renders her tragedy even more desolate. Udta, in the end, belongs to its women. Sometimes they carry hockey sticks and sometimes stethoscopes.

The surface of Punjab's skin has been punctured by many a needle. Udta Punjab now scratches that surface to lay bare an infected bloodstream. The present it fictionalises is hopeless, but the future of its youth in withdrawal is equally frightful. Watching the film puts the spat between producer Anurag Kashyap and CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani in perspective. Udta, if taken seriously, does have ramifications for Punjab. The film suggests that when a state stares at ruin, the buck and the opium consignment both stop at the door of its politicians. Punjab ought to be underUdta's influence next.

review: UDTA PUNJAB

What a take off into the storm!

3 stars

Mini Review:

Controversy's child makes an appearance on the big screen and you will find yourself involved with the characters. The storytelling is so good, you will want the good guys to win. You will take sides. You will despair at the bad guys. You will love the characters, hate them, and just be plain horrified and disturbed by them, but you will not come away untouched.

Main Review:

Next time you see someone wearing reflective sunglasses, I'm going to imagine him to be like Balli.
Next time someone says they're looking at MOOCs, I will remember ASI Sartaj Singh who passed his BA by correspondence course.
Next time someone says they're jamming with friends, I'm going to wonder if Tommy is singing about a lost girl somewhere.
Next time someone says they wish they were going up to the hills with the gang, I would wish to have Dr. Preet's number at hand
Next time someone says, our films cannot hold the audiences, I will drag them to watch this movie. It manages to tell the story of users, abusers, of people who want to milk the system and those who want to help drag people out of this vicious circle.

Dr. Preet is played convincingly by Kareena Kapoor (she makes you forget she was a caricature of a doctor in 3 Idiots, and even in Kambakkt Ishq). She is so gorgeous, she lights up every frame. And it's a relief because she is running a drug rehabilitation clinic, which is gritty and not a pretty sight.

ASI Sartaj Singh is played convincingly by Diljit Dosanjh and the movie ought to receive a star simply because he looks at Dr. Preet like she's immensely edible and is embarrassed by his thoughts. That he accomplishes without looking like some food deprived Ranjeet or Gulshan Grover...

Shahid Kapoor as the wild Tommy Singh is cool, and his character at once ghastly, at once kinky, at once I'm never going to allow my daughter to any rock concert' bad, and at once is there any good in him?' I loved his transformation and it is such a pleasure to watch him transform. Yes, for a habitual user this transformation seems to be too convenient, but hey, it's Bollywood, and love is strangely miraculous.

Plainly shocked at what characters in the movie can do to Aalia Bhat, it took me a while to watch the screen without upchucking my coffee. But I felt the same when ASI Sartaj says, Now you will realise what it is to lie within the system and betray it...'

The violence in the words may not be what the big city coffee shop crowd tweets about, but then the big city coffee shop crowds are also dealing with uber urban recreational drugs. The story is the same. The vituperative language is so natural, you know the expletives belong there. They have not been added to make silly women giggle and go, Haw!'

The movie is so claustrophobic at times, you begin to look at the Goa billboard with the same need for release. The events that hasten the end even I couldn't have predicted. And when the credits roll, you begin to breathe.

Udta Punjab recorded the highest opening day in East Punjab of 2016 due to the regional content and presence of Diljit Dosanjh. The top first day grossing Hindi films in East Punjab in 2016 are as follows.

1. Udta Punjab - 1,93,00,000

2. Fan - 1,75,00,000

3. Housefull 3 - 1,58,00,000

4. Airlift - 1,24,00,000

5. Baaghi - 1,03,00,000

Udta Punjab had fantastic numbers in Punjab but the cities outside the state were also strong. Gurgaon was excellent while places like Faridabad, Panipat, Jammu, Shimla, etc were also very good.
