Udta Punjab Review (No Spoilers): It's Alia's World and We're All Living In It

Such a disturbing movie. Like, not sure if I can go to sleep tonight kind of disturbing. Very disturbing. But also very high quality.

I don't even know where to begin with this. I guess with how the film begins? The "Chitta Ve", which I have been listening to over and over again at work, turns out to be all about drugs! Who knew! We open with Shahid playing a very clear Yo Yo Honey Singh analogue and singing "Chitta Ve" at a massive concert. And then we see him and his entourage snorting cocaine (I think? I really don't know anything about drugs). And from there we see the whole cycle, how the cops look the other way and publicize the token busts they make, how politicians talk a lot but do nothing, how the activists try but are fighting a losing battle, and how the little helpless workers in the fields continue their small lives on the outskirts.

We are seeing the whole pattern of society and how drugs connect it all. Fine, okay, not terribly original but all right. But what I started to notice as the film continued is that the message wasn't just anti-drugs, it was anti-society. It's not that drugs made the politicians corrupt, or elevated shallow empty musicians to positions heros, or forced cops to ignore the laws, or made poor little girls from Bihar travel to the Punjab for soul deadening manual labor. That was already happening. All drugs did was make those problems worse.

Put it another way, sometimes drugs and other illegal options can seem like a way to turn the power on its head. It can let minorities became business owners, make them powerful, help their communities. It can spread wealth in unexpected and unusual paths, it can effect change, it can be a part of the revolution. Heck, I just saw that in Iyobinte Pusthakam, when they run illegal liquor to help pay for guns.

But what this film is saying is that the drugs serve to enforce the existing power dynamics in the region. The most powerless people in society remain the most powerless people in society, just even more abused. Even the characters who, at first, appear to be profiting from drugs, to be moving up in the world, are just heading for a much much worse fall. The only ones who succeed are those who are already on top. Which isn't a spoiler, because those who appear to be on top at the beginning and those who appear to be on the bottom, may not actually be at the top and bottom, as we see as time goes on.

Hmm, what else can I say without spoiling things? Oh! Acting! Phenomenal, all around! Alia is on a whole other plain, I do not understand how she is this good, this young. It's like the second coming of Nutan. Or Kajol. Just this raw, open emotion. She is the heart and soul of the film, and she carries the whole thing on her back.

Shahid is a kick! He's basically the comic relief, and he is great at it! I looked up the director, and he previously worked on Kaminey, and wrote the script for it, which is my all time favorite Shahid performance. This is kind of the same, plays into that same craziness and energy. But without any of the depth or sorrow from Kaminey. Well, maybe just a tinge of it. But mostly just comedy and energy and fun.

Kareena is really well-caste. It's kind of a small role, really. Well, smallest of the leads. But she has to project confidence and calm and control. She has to be the one who is five steps ahead of everyone else. Who can see the big picture better than them. So having her be the biggest name in the cast, and the most experienced actor, works very well. Although, I kind of think 5 years ago she could have knocked the Alia role out of the park. Not now, with all her old lady married feel to her, but back then she could have done it.

Dilji Dosanjh was dreamy! Why did no one tell me? He had these big sensitive eyes and a sweet smile and all that. And he also had a great presence. I cared, immediately, about his character. And also respected and enjoyed watching him. I believed he was smart, I believed he was brave, I believed he was the head of his household, all of that, right away.

But like I said, it's Alia's movie. Alia and the director. It's an extremely complicated plot, and he balances it perfectly, hopping between character and character just right to keep us interested in them all, switching from despair to comedy just right to keep us from being depressed. It's also, of course, a really controversial plot. He really pulls no punches in blaming the politicians and the cops and everyone else who just looks the other way and chooses not to care.

And, like I said, the real lesson is that nothing changes and nothing is new. The ones who were abused before are still abused now, the ones who were abusers before are still abusers now, it's just that drugs are part of it now, instead of water, or taxes, or the army, or any of the other things that have been fought over in that country before.

Okay now that the official reviews are all out, I thought Ill post my short review of whatever I have watched in the leak version(please don judge me).
The film itself has flaws and it does disappoint because of the very high expectations. However I will not say this is a bad film. As a film it may not be in the leagues of well made films this year like Neerja and Aligarh, but it is not as bad as Fan. Like a reviewer has mentioned, it has some highs and some lows. I have to give special mention for the concept and courage to make a film on this issue. Not just in Punjab, but drugs is a huge problem for any country to tackle. Thankfully I live in a country that has very very strict laws in place to curb this issue.

Not going to go very deep because I have to say I skipped a few scenes here and there. However I have to mention that screenplay wasnt tight enough. For a film like this, screenplay is very very crucial to stretch audience attention phase. Once the flow goes haywire(which is in second half), it gets harder for the audience to keep watching the film without feeling bored. Another issue I had was with the climax. Could have been better. Especially for a film like this. Still, the film has its highs and for that I have to credit AC for it. The topic was well conceptionualized. Special kudos to him, for he was able extract all round great performances from his cast.

Performances, as mentioned above, were one of the major plus for the film. And I believe a lot of reviewers also will agree to this. All four leads have done great job and no one stole the show from one another for me. Its like foot in my mouth moment because I expected Kareena to steal the show. And I was disappointed that her role was so short compared to the 3 other characters. Since beginning it was said the film is about 4 characters. Meaning all 4 are parallel leads. So it was shocking her role wasn't as substantial. That said Kareena was superb in her small role. She does understated roles pretty well, that Ill admit of course. Even though she is generally perceived the best actress of this generation(overrated), she isn't as bad but definitely not so great. Of course it was rather out of character moment for her. Could have just made her character an NGO fighting this cause. Alia had a very complex role and she did wonders to the role. She proved why she is the best of her contemporaries. Yes she is a star kid and yes I am annoyed by her over exposure. But she can act and does it so well. Its hard to deny her talents when they are glaringly there. Plus it doesn't help that none of her contemporaries are great in acting like her, barring PC Jr of course.

Which brings me to the male leads of the film. Unlike popular opinion, I actually preferred the acting of the male leads a little more than female leads. Diljit was simply outstanding in his role. And mind you I had no clue of his previous work at all. But he is totally amazing in his act. Nothing over the top. Now I pray its either him or Harshvardan Rane who are gonna win the debut awards this year or Ill be so mad. 😡😆 Shahid, well. It was nice to see him attempt comedy. It came out good, but I wont say I enjoyed most of it. But he was very good(besides the comedy). Not his career best, but definitely one of his best alongside Kaminey and Haider. It was a weird character, which wasn't as developed as Alia's, but still a complex role to play which he did with elan! Im glad he does films that brings him out of his comfort zone and boy how amazingly he does well. More respect to this guy! This is a role, not everyone would love. Some would love it and some would hate it. So kudos to him for daringly taking it up and doing it well. I don't think I can see another as Tommy Singh. He made it his own for sure. Everyone else pitched in the best they could. Special mention to Sathish Kaushik(he is amazing!). If not for the right actors, this film would have fallen apart.

AT's music is another major highlight of the film. I am aware that many keep saying he keeps repeating same kind of music. But at least he does them well. When people can accept the monotonous repetitive music of the likes of Mithoon/Jeet and the likes, I don get why they have issues with AT alone. I actually love UP album, every track was amazing. Though my favourite is Ikk Kudi <333

All said, the film definitely did not deserve the treatment that it received. Be it the ban or the leak. This isn't a lazy film or a bad film which deserved such negativity. But they always say, in times of negativity, something positive will happen. I guess that has become true in this case. The publicity from the ban/leak and unanimous support from the industry people and audience has made this film a winner. And some of the amazing reviews only strengthened it. I was expecting a lot, so there was chances for me to get slightly disappointed. But a lot of people and most of the critics loved the film. So I am okay. This isn't a film for everyone, therefore, I wont expect everyone to like it. Just wishing the film the best! 👍🏼

Komal Nahta @KomalNahta

Good cinema, dark cinema BUT commercial too! That's #UdtaPunjab for you. It's a box-office winner. Read my review at

ALT Entertainment and Phantom Films' Udta Punjab (A) is about the drug menace in the state of Punjab. The problem of how the youth are falling prey to the evil of drugs has been narrated through four characters - Tommy Singh (Shahid Kapoor), Mary Jane (Alia Bhatt; that's not her real name), Sartaj Singh (Diljit Dosanjh) and Dr. Preeti Sahni (Kareena Kapoor Khan).

Tommy Singh is a hugely popular rock star of Punjab, whom the youth of Punjab simply loves, adores and emulates. He is on drugs and it would not be wrong to say that he has, in his own way, made taking drugs appear cool. A police raid on Tommy Singh's house on his birthday leads to the arrest of the rock star who has consumed drugs. Tommy gets bail after cooling his heels in jail for some days and is now unable to make music due to withdrawal symptoms following his decision to give up drugs. His cousin keeps prodding him to consume drugs to get back into form but Tommy's uncle (Satish Kaushik) prevents him from going back to drugs.

Mary Jane is from Bihar. She lands in Punjab and starts working in the fields. One day, quite by accident, she finds a packet of heroin weighing three kilograms. She decides to sell the drug to drug dealers and make a lot of money. But her conscience awakens at the last moment and she throws away the entire three kilograms of the heroin. This infuriates the drug mafia which holds her captive. In their custody, Mary Jane is raped regularly and is also injected with drugs. Mary Jane escapes one day and, by sheer chance, meets Tommy Singh while he is on the run to avoid arrest, this time for causing nuisance in public. Even as Tommy and Mary are getting to know one another, Mary's captors catch her and take her back to where she had escaped from, to the life of drugs and debauchery.

Sartaj Singh is a police officer who, like the others of his ilk, does not bat an eyelid before accepting bribes. It is not rare that his corrupt ways and those of the other police officers ensure the safe passage of raw materials and chemicals for the manufacture of drugs which are then so easily available to the youth of Punjab. But Sartaj's life comes crashing down when his own younger brother, Balli (Prabhjyot Singh), becomes a drug addict. Sartaj now decides to fight the drug menace but finds himself quite helpless. That's when Dr. Preeti Sahni comes to his help. In fact, it is Dr. Preeti who has made Sartaj Singh feel guilty for contributing to the same drug menace - by overlooking crime, for the lure of bribes - of which his brother has now become a victim. Dr. Preeti Sahni treats drug addicts and she has saved Balli's life too. Balli is now at her rehabilitation centre. Dr. Preeti Sahni begins to help Sartaj Singh in getting to the root of the drug problem so as to expose the manufacturers. It's not an easy task but the two manage to unearth shocking details which reveal the involvement of an MP, Maninder Brar (Kamal Tewari). The duo prepares a complete file with proof and documentary evidence to nail the culprits, which they decide to hand over to the Election Commission since elections in Punjab are around the corner.

Here, Tommy Singh, still on the run, is so smitten by Mary Jane that he wants to save her from her captors.

Does Tommy Singh manage to save Mary? Do the police nab him or does he surrender? Do Sartaj Singh and Dr. Preeti Sahni succeed in their mission to expose MP Maninder Brar? Or do they fail?

The film is a very hard-hitting and bold account of the drug menace. The story and screenplay are written by Sudip Sharma and Abhishek Chaubey and are raw and realistic. Of course, the scenes and the language spoken by the characters are of the kind which would disturb the viewers and may hurt the sensibilities of a section of the audience but for those who can stomach all this, the story and screenplay are an eye-opener. The drama is so tight that it doesn't let the audience's thoughts stray for even a minute. Yes, the manner in which Sartaj Singh and Dr. Preeti Sahni investigate the drug scam may be a bit too simplistic but it doesn't really take away from the interesting drama. The portions of Mary Jane are depressing but the full-of-life girl, her never-say-die attitude and her fighting spirit are all like antidotes to the depressing parts of the film. The inherent humour, whether in the language or the scenes, also serves to provide entertainment in the realistic drama. The heart-touching moments between Sartaj Singh and Dr. Preeti Sahni and a couple of them between Tommy Singh and Mary Jane are very appealing.

On the negative', side, if one may use the word, the drama is devoid of the usual frills of romance and romantic songs and the other elements of a commercial entertainer, like comedy and the regular family drama. Also, the lavish use of swear words, spoken with great relish, can put off the orthodox audience, probably completely, but it is also this very language and these very dialogues which are the mainstay of the film and which will greatly appeal to connoisseurs of realistic cinema because the language goes well with the bold theme of the film.

Dialogues, penned by Sudip Sharma, are very bold and, as mentioned above, very colourful too. A lot of the dialogues are in Punjabi.

Shahid Kapoor does a superb job as Tommy Singh. He plays the rock star to the hilt, with all his eccentricities. As a drug addict too, he is excellent. His performance in the film would be counted as one of his best so far. His facial expressions and body language are a treat to watch. Alia Bhatt, completely deglamorised, is outstanding in the role of the Bihari girl who gets sucked into the world of drugs and prostitution. Her performance is so natural that one can't help but heap praises on her. She makes her character cent per cent believable. Her make-up deserves special mention. Kareena Kapoor Khan lives the role of the doctor on a mission. She looks glamorous and acts with effortless ease. Her romantic moments with Sartaj Singh are very cute. Diljit Dosanjh is another powerhouse of talent. He plays the unscrupulous police officer whose conscience is suddenly awakened, with aplomb. In North India in general and in Punjab in particular, Diljit will be a major draw for the audience because of his superstardom in Punjabi cinema. Satish Kaushik is endearing as Tommy Singh's uncle. Manav Vij makes his presence felt as the spineless police inspector, Jujhar Singh. Suhail Nayyar is lovely as Jassi. Vansh Bhardwaj has his moments as Sonu. Prabhjyot Singh is effective as Balli. Kamal Tewari leaves a mark in the role of MP Maninder Brar. Rajesh Kumar Sharma (as Kaka), Mahabir Bhullar (as Veerji), Suvinder Vicky (as Kuku) and Dilawar Sidhu (as Bhandi) lend admirable support. Kaizad Kotwal, Vishal Handa, Pawan Singh, Satwant Kaur, Anita Sab- dheesh, Satpal Singh, Nina Tiwana, Swairaj Sandhu and the rest are adequate.

Abhishek Chaubey's direction is praiseworthy. He has adopted a narrative style which goes perfectly well with the rawness of the drama, keeping the target audience (youth) in mind. He has extracted great performances from out of the actors. Amit Trivedi's music is a big plus point. Chitave', Udd da Punjab' and Ikk kudi' are superbly tuned songs. The other songs are also very nice. Lyrics (late Shiv Kumar Batalvi, Shellee and Varun Grover) are wonderful. Sudeesh Adhana's choreography is in synch with the mood of the film and the characters on whom the songs are picturised. Naren Chandavarkar and Benedict Taylor's background music is extraordinary. Rajeev Ravi's cinematography deserves distinction marks. Action scenes, choreographed by Harpal Singh and Ravi Kumar, are raw. Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray's production designing is lovely. Meghna Sen has done a swell job of the film's editing.

On the whole, Udta Punjab is a dark film but yet, it is an entertaining fare. It may be for a limited audience only, but the size of the target audience is big enough to see the film cross the average mark and generate profits. This, despite the fact that revenues from sale of satellite rights will be very limited. Business in Punjab will be excellent for obvious reasons.
