This week's new release Te3n is the official remake of the South-Korean movieMontage.

While I am yet to watch Montage, I have seen Sujoy Ghosh's last directorial venture and so I can tell you that the ominous, foreboding narrative of Te3n is couched in the same "Kahani-esque" universe.

This one, too, is set in Kolkata, where we again find ourselves trying to gather the various pieces of a kidnapping mystery. A young child is missing and the kidnapper still at large.

As the film opens, we see her old grandfather slouching over a tape recorder, listening to her last voice recording. The desperate cries of help and his own need for closure have made rounds of the police station an indispensable part of his day.

If at all it is possible to fall more in love with Amitabh Bachchan, then his performance in this movie peaks our adulation for him to fever pitch. He is exquisite. The vacuous expression on his face, his searching eyes. It is thanks to Amitabh Bachchan that we embark on this immersive journey about finding out the truth. It's been 8 long years...

And the tragedy has had a catastrophic impact on nearly everyone associated with it.

The then-police officer presiding on the case is now Father Martin, who tries to seek redemption in the word of God. Nawazuddin Siddiqui peddles his wares with his usual aplomb as a guilt-ridden cop who wrestles with himself about the true purpose of his life. And Vidya Balan is such a delight to watch as the new officer in charge that you wish there was more of her in the film.

Performances aside, Te3n flounders and the overzealous background score can't camouflage the gaping holes in its narrative. In any mystery thriller, dead ends and red herrings are part of the fun, but the climax must tower over it all for us to feel satiated.

Sadly, that never quite happens with Te3n. The grisly countenance of the film gets blunted by a somewhat vapid script. Unlike Kahani, we not only figure out the story well in advance, we even have enough time to wager a bet about how the cards will fall, with which side up.

A more convincing back-story and more time at hand to grapple with the various clues would have been ideal.

But go for Te3n to witness the beauty of Amitabh Bachchan. He alone is reason enough! Really! I give it a generous 3.5 QUINTS out of 5, only for him.

title=
Amitabh Bachchan in a still from 'TE3N'

Film: TE3N

Director: Ribhu Dasgupta

Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Vidya Balan

Rating: ***

Nothing is a greater punishment than living with the guilt of a crime you never committed. Turning the spotlight on it and more, Ribhu Dasgupta's directorial takes you into an old man's journey in the search for truth.

Slow and steady, the storyline of TE3N plunges into the depths of what a grandfather goes through when he loses his granddaughter forever, after she was held for ransom.

Inspired by the Korean movie Montage, the film shows Amitabh Bachchan in the role of John Biswas, who searches for his granddaughter's kidnapper even after eight long years.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays Father Martin, who was once a police officer, and Vidya Balan essays the role of a cop, Sarita Sarkar.

Obsessed with the misfortune, John puts the pieces of the puzzle together as each day bequeaths him to look for more, the events still haunt him and leave him sleepless.

Determined to find who the culprit is, he connects the dots with the help of his old friend Martin, the new cop on the scene Sarita, a tattered scooter and a few tape recordings.

Eight years later, the crime is repeated in the same old fashion. Is this a second chance for them? Will John be able to hunt down the sinner this time around?

The plot leaves you pondering over these questions. The anticipation keeps you glued through the jittery ride, especially towards the second half of the film. Sadly, the suspense doesn't stay for long as the tale turns out to be tad too predictable.

Bachchan's gestures and expressions are so real that they engross you in his pursuit for the gospel truth. He makes his madness believable and takes you into the flow.

While Nawazuddin gets completely into the skin of his character as the police officer-turned-priest, who is looking for redemption, Vidya acts well despite her scantily-etched role. However, there is nothing too striking about their performances.

The reason the plot loses its chord is in its foreseeable fable. Moreover, the lack of pace and thrill is another glitch in the script.

The story or the screenplay don't set your pulse rates rising or heartbeats racing, but lethargically crawl towards the climax.

Although quite predictable, what truly works for the movie is the fact that the climax follows a logic and reason instead of being too dramatic or not-so-believable.

If you're looking for a chance to scratch your brain, TE3N might be the right choice for the weekend!

Te3n' movie review by audience: Live update. Amitabh Bachchan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui shooting for 'Te3n'.Facebook/Amitabh Bachchan

Director Ribhu Dasgupta's Bollywood movie "Te3n," starring Amitabh Bachchan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Vidya Balan, has received positive reviews from the audience around the world.

"Te3n" is an Indian thriller film, which is an official remake of South Korean movie "Montage." Suresh Nair, Ritesh Shah and Bijesh Jayarajan have written the screenplay for the movie, while Ribhu Dasgupta penned the story. Filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh, who has acquired its remake rights, has jointly produced the movie with Gulab Singh Tanwar, Hyunwoo Thomas Kim, Suresh Nair, Sameer Rajendran and Gauri Sathe.

The story of "Te3n" is about a woman, who loses her daughter in a kidnapping case that was never solved. Eight years later, a kidnapper copies the unsolved case exactly. A cop (Vidya Balan), a priest (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and a vengeful man (Amitabh Bachchan) set out to investigate this kidnapping case. How they unravel the mystery forms the crux of the story.

The audience say "Te3n" has an interesting and realistic story and writers have done wonderful script work for the film. The director has got good grip of the narration. Though it is slow and dragging in parts, the director manages to keep the audience engaged right from the beginning to end. He makes the film-goers watch sitting on the edge of their seats, biting their nails.

The viewers add Amitabh Bachchan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui have delivered brilliant performances, which are the highlights of "Te3n." Vidya Balan has limited screen presence, but manages to impress the viewers. Clinton Cerejo's music and Tushar Kanti Ray's camera work are the big attractions on the technical front.

We bring you some viewers' verdict shared on Twittter. Here is the live update of the 'Te3n' movie review by audience:

TE3N

Bollywood witnessed a laugh-a-riot at the Box-Office in the form of last week's release HOUSEFULL 3. This week will see an intense whodunit drama in TE3N, a film that is an official remake of the South Korean film MONTAGE. Will TE3N be able to hit the bull's eye or will it miss the target is what remains to be seen.

The film starts off with a flashback event featuring Inspector Martin (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and John Roy (Amitabh Bachchan). This is then followed by the religious daily visit of John Roy to the police station to meet Inspector Sarita Sarkar (Vidya Balan), regarding the kidnapping and killing of his granddaughter Angela Roy. The story then oscillates between the past and the present. Amidst all this, there also exists the story of the guilt filled Inspector-turned-Priest Martin Das, the very man who was in charge of Angela Roy's case. While the police department (including Inspector Martin Das) gives up totally on the Angela Roy's case, John Roy simply refuses to do so and vows to his wheelchair ridden wife that he will not take rest until he nails the innocent Angela Roy's dreaded kidnapper and murderer. Around 8 years later, there occurs a kidnapping of a school going kid Ronny. The mysterious part about this kidnapping is that, it is totally similar to that of Angela Roy. That's when the trio of Father Martin, Inspector Sarita Sarkar and John Roy set out to search the masterminded smart criminal. While Father Martin and Inspector Sarita Sarkar go the legal way, John Roy, despite his old age sets out on his own to nab the criminal. What happens after that are a series of twists and turns, which ultimately leads to a shocking revelation in the end. Does John Roy fulfil the promise that he had made to his wife, do Father Martin and Inspector Sarita Sarkar become successful in nabbing the culprit and what is the shocking revelation in the end is what forms the rest of the story.

The film's director Ribhu Dasgupta, whose last film was the forgettable MICHAEL, returns with the whodunit thriller TE3N. While the promos of the film were enticing and thrilling, the sad part is that the same cannot be said about the film in totality. Right from the first scene, the film's oscillation between the past and the present leaves the viewers a bit confused. While the film's screenplay (Suresh Nair, Ritesh Shah, Bijesh Jayarajan) has many loopholes and is far from compelling, it fails to do complete justice to the 'shock value' that forms the crux of such genre of films.

Considering the film had three powerhouses of talent, the film's direction seems to be a bit of a letdown. In an attempt to make the film an indepth thriller, the makers drag the film at many places adding too many details which at times seem unwanted. The pace of the film is very slow in the first half until it picks up for a few minutes in the pre-interval sequence. The same is the case with the film's second half, except that the film picks up its pace here but only for a limited time. There are a handful of scenes and situations where the film goes astray.

As for the performances, TE3N boasts of three powerhouse performers in the form of Amitabh Bachchan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Vidya Balan. Besides being proficient as ever, Amitabh Bachchan is totally 'in his character' and in top form. But the weak script does him in, in a couple of places. Nawazuddin Siddiqui comes a close second with his cop-turned-father act, but lands up being underutilized. The audiences who will go to see the film expecting the antics of Nawazuddin Siddiqui (like in BADLAPUR or BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN) will be sorely disappointed. Despite the fact that he tries to elevate his character, the weak script fails him too. Vidya Balan, on the other hand, lands up doing a 'guest appearance' in the film. Her portrayal of being a razor sharp policewoman required a bit more conviction (and scenes, in that order). On the whole, she does land up doing a decent job, if not a superlative one, something that is expected of her always. The other actors help the film move forward.

The film's music (Clinton Cerejo) is extremely delightful, with tracks like 'Haq Hai', 'Rootha' and 'Grahan' standing out. The film's background music (Clinton Cerejo) is reverberating and helps in the film's progress.

While the film's cinematography (Tushar Kanti Ray) is good, it's editing (Gairik Sarkar) could have been tighter which definitely would have worked in the favour of the film.

On the whole, TE3N, despite being a whodunit thriller, suffers extremely because of its slow pace and weak screenplay. At the box-office it will be unable to connect with its target audience.

I knew it... a MESS!!

Now hope Kahaani-2 is not a disappointment. The yellow cabs of Kolkatta, dimly lit roads, khakis, will give a sense of dejavu.
