Hello, my name is Riya. I follow this forum sometimes when I'm not busy, and I really wanted the opinions of some members here on something.

So I'm from America and I'm doing a class presentation in my Cultural Diversity class on Bollywood.

For this presentation, I want to show two Bollywood trailers to the class for discussion on Bollywood films.

I want one to be for a typical Bollywood masala film (I was thinking maybe DDLJ, Bajrangi?)

And then I want to show one for a more unconventional Bollywood film (like maybe NH10 or something like that)

But I'm not really sure what trailers to show. They have to be available on YouTube with english subs though.

So I wanted some suggestions from you guys?

So if you can, comment a suggestion for a trailer for a masala film and one for a non-masala film.

Thanks for your help,

Riya

Hi,
I am from the US too . Nice topic.

Masala: DDLJ has themes like Patriarchy, arranged marriage, the whole dialog with the "Hindustani ladki ki izaat" dialog so those would trigger a discussion based on my experience, If you want something more contemporary I would suggest Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani' for the masala film..

Non-Masala- NH10 is a good film. The other two I would suggest are Lunch Box or even Wake Up Sid.

Masala genre: Kal Ho Na Ho. Bajrangi Bhaijaan or PK. (All are non controversial and feel good stories and doesn't give the typical stereotype.)
Non masala: The lunchbox. Swades. 3 idiots.

This is definitely non-Masala and I don't know if this is strictly a BW movie, it is a Mira Nair movie. But 'The Namesake' is one I would highly recommend based on the whole kid who grows up in the US whose parents are immigrants aspect, it has Kal Penn who many know from Harold and Kumar or House and it is based on an award winning novel by Jhumpa Lahiri. It also has Tabu and Irfan.
This is the trailer.

Another I would also recommend is English Vinglish.
