I really do get where you're coming from about Kankar. I personally feel the execution/treatment had room for improvement. When one has benchmarks such as Daam, Malaal or Doraha..everything else doesn't seem as overwhelming to be honest. To be fair though, when you have MJ AND Umera on board, it's really hard to surpass that combination. MJ seems to effortlessly understand where Umera comes from..she only adds to illustrating her stories onscreen. Truthfully, I doubt the three shows above would be as wonderfully shown if it weren't for the way MJ handled them.
Going back to Kankar, I personally did like it. I feel the show had a soul and Umera tried her best to get back to her usual way of storytelling. At a time when some people have tried commercializing her work for their own gain - Kankar was the closest to what I'm used to seeing Umera do. If that makes any sense? The execution and treatment could've been better but then again, the director of Kankar is hardly experienced and whatever I did see was still far more commendable than what others have been unfolding with her work as of late. Generally speaking, it's one of the better shows to come out on Pak tv in the past few years...but, compare it to some of Umera's earlier work..yeah I completely understand what you mean.
Try watching Subh Ka Sitara by the way. That show doesn't even seem like a show written by Umera (yet it is), let alone the awful treatment it was given. Arguably her worst show ever..very cringeworthy. Goes back to why, I'd take Kankar over any of her recent works. Not to mention, I do think Baloch was genuinely very good as Kiran. I may be biased...😆..but I feel she tried her best to go above and beyond with whatever was given to her without much help from other contributing factors that make Umera's shows usually hers.
