'Fan': Shah Rukh Khan's best in years (Full Movie Review)

What a triumphant return to form for an actor whose career has been lately beleaguered by sub-standard scripts and mediocre directors.

This time Shah Rukh is in the mood to kill and we don't mean that just as a metaphor. As this far-from-frothy take on the very complex star-fan relationships develops into a ominous cat-and-mouse chase, Shah Rukh grips both the characters-yes, for those who came in late he plays both the star and the fan-in a firm grasp that makes us simply gasp.

Shah Rukh is in full command of both the characters. He gives both Aryan and Gaurav ample room to grow, grow apart and then clash in ways that shows what skilful scripting can do to a superstar's yearning to excel.

Outwardly playing Aryan Khanna, the superstar , would seem relatively easier for Shah Rukh than playing the obsessive fan. But playing the star is actually a far tougher task. Shah Rukh incorporates elements from his real life into the on-screen persona. Aryan Khan comes across as a very humane icon, there are bouts of charm and fits of rage going hand-in-hand here. He makes no attempts to deify himself. That's what gives the narrative its muscle and lubrication.

As for the fan Gaurav Chanana, the prosthetics go a long way in creating a character who is so believable and yet so distinguished Aryan Khanna that it's almost like two different actors playing the two roles. The voice, the body language and the complete character transformation, we've seen Shah Rukh do it in "My Name Is Khan" and "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi."

From the sunny to the sinister, Shah Rukh's Gaurav Chanana takes us on a rollercoaster ride across a plot which is propelled by pungency. The superstar gets some valuable support from co-actors like Sayani Gupta, Deepika Amin and Yogendra Tikoo whose presence is skillfully woven into the darkly disarming drama of a duel between the dapper star and his distressed disingenuous doppelganger.

Writer Habib Faisal seems to tap into the fan's inner-most adulation for the star. There is more angst than sweetness in the relationship. In scene after scene, even when the angry fan gets down to 'create a scene', Faisal conceptualizes the turbulent conflict between the idolized and the idoliser, with a keen eye on keeping the drama on a tight leash.

For a large part of the narrative the energy and mood are bridled and broken down to an acceptable and credible level. The director films the duel of deception in bright colours that flatter to deceive. The bonhomie wears thin soon enough. When it does, the narrative is ready to shift gears with brisk adeptness.

A lot of the credit for bringing the two protagonists' irreconcilable lives into a karmic clasp goes to editor Namrata Rao. She breathes an urgency into the proceedings without knocking the drama senseless . Towards the end, the plot begins to fall apart.

Which, in a way, is what is only to be expected. Doom, you see, a pre-condition in a relationship between unequals.

What "Fan" ultimately says about the star's equation with his admirers is that tragedy awaits any attempt to break the barrier that divides the heroes from their followers. Every star who thinks he and she must mingle with the fans and "belong" with them must see this film.

Shah Rukh Khan's first big film of 2016 Fan has finally released and the man who rocked the show for audience was none other than SRK himself. King Khan was in full flow in his double avatars delighting audience both as Aryan Khanna and Gaurav, more so as the latter which viewers unanimously felt was one of his standout master class performance.

The movie's sole selling point is undoubtedly SRK and his solid acting performance. Disappointment, however, was writhe large on the faces of a few viewers especially at the multiplex that we visited. Quite a few felt that the plot lost its steam in the second half. Shocking also for many was the omission of the Jabra song from the film. A few kids were mighty disappointed to see SRK's trademark dance song go missing. R

The biggest thrill of #FAN will be to see @iamsrk unmask the actor beneath the superstar, in a rare confrontation between fandom & stardom

Pinkvilla

SRK wins it all in this gamble! He has won back his die-hard fans. Just with his sheer effort of making something that any mainstream superstar would never imagine risking, he has redeemed himself.

Fan is different for him. His dedication is hard to miss. As Gaurav, he is flawless. As the superstar Aryan Khanna, he is flawed. No matter what Gaurav does, you are compelled to believe he is faultless. It is not often that one of his King Khan's characters overpower him in a film, but Gaurav does.

For the first hour of the film, director Maneesh keeps the story moving smoothly. But it eventually suffers from over-plotting and a grievous lack of logic. The film exhausts you eventually.

The plague of the second half does its best to mar the noble intentions behind the movie, but eventually SRK saves the day.

For over 23 years now, we've been in love with one man named SHAH RUKH KHAN. Mimicking him, dancing to his songs, miming his dialogues, we've all done it all. Beyond all of it, we have all desired to meet the man himself, hug him and call him our own. We've all been FANS. Proud ones. Crazy ones. And then we meet Gaurav!

Meet the FAN

Gaurav Chandna (Shah Rukh Khan) from Indravihar Delhi is obessesed with his idol, Aryan Khanna (Shah Rukh Khan again). Gaurav has all traits of a die-hard fan and is also called Jr. Aryan Khanna. Posters, pictures, dialogues, lyrics, imitation, he has done it all. Finally, he manages to win the local acting competition along with the cash prize of Rs. 20000.

Gaurav heads with this money to Mumbai, exactly the way Aryan did to meet his superstar on his birthday. But when he finds himself amongst a sea of fans for just one man, he is disappointed to have not been able to meet him. Gaurav is the fan that thinks that he is as a part of his superstar's life as the superstar is of his. To serve his obsession, Gaurav takes a crooked path to meet Aryan Khanna. The outcome of which is that he feels betrayed by his idol, his God. He is no more Jr. Aryan Khanna. He is only Gaurav, a bitter, wounded fan who wants to show his power to the superstar. There the tale takes a twist! It's GAURAV vs ARYAN.

Or rather

SRK- The Actor vs SRK- The Superstar

AND IT'S TOUGH TO DECIDE WHO WINS!

Every Shah Rukh Khan film is like a festival. There is much euphoria, excitement and buzz surrounding the films each time. Last few years have been a peak of this excitement with heightening publicity, rise in social media and sheer genius of marketing. With films like Chennai Express, Happy New Year and Dilwale being major disappointments for the superstar's fans, it was the trailer of his latest- FAN that brought back hope!

FAN as a film is thrilling, surprising and unconventional. 2hrs 22minutes and no song in the film. It's a gripping screenplay that with some masterful execution that results in some phenomenal on screen enigma.

Starting with credits to Greg Cannon, the make up artist who gave us Gaurav Channa of Shah Rukh Khan, the character builds along a long way. It's all about Gaurav.

LET ME SAY THIS, GAURAV SETS A NEW BENCHMARK FOR SHAH RUKH KHAN- THE ACTOR. You can see him on screen, relate to his nave acts, enjoy his tomfoolery, share his enthusiasm and feel his pain as if it were your own. SRK has given every ounce of brilliance to Gaurav- the body language, the energy, the slur, the wickedness. EVERYTHING.

We already do love SRK- The Superstar!

What is notable and worth applauding is the writing and characterization that sketches flaws and shades of grey in both the fan and the superstar. The megalomania, the ego trips, the temper, the right to ownership, the fear, there's everything.

The ladies Shriya, Waluscha have a well-fit role in the film. Both with a character that makes a difference.

One of the most notable aspects in the film is the chase sequence. I think they're overdone in both length and occurrence. The film has 3 chase sequences. The chase sequence in Dubrovnik was my favorite and quite a sight to watch. However, it was too long! The film could've easily been 15minutes shorter of duration and still been as impactful.
There are areas where the film goes through slumber, but these are tiny pot holes in a larger grand picture.

The VFX takes the film to another level. Mind you, Shah Rukh Khan is truly up to something with RedChillies VFX!

The silent hero of the film definitely was the mastermind Maneesh Sharma! No song or dance or corny dialogues, you made a film with a team of performers and a story. Beyond all you made the entire experience look flamboyant, international and fabulous!

Most importantly, the film questions the entire position and philosophy of both FANDOM & STARDOM! It's no cake walk! To be an admirer or to be an individual achiever? The film subtly touches across so many points of the glorious and the gory and the greys! How legit is the idea of admiration? To the level of obsession? How legit is the idea of desire? To what extent? The film leaves it for you to think and decide for yourselves.

PS. It's a good time to say that Shah Rukh Khan is catching up with the new age filmmaking!

WE LOVE YOU SHAH RUKH KHAN!

*time to dance*
