Fan takes a superb opening

One of the most anticipated movies of 2016 has hit the screens and has taken a great opening at the box-office too. Shah Rukh Khan starrer Fan, released in 3500 screens, got off to a bumper start from the morning shows itself. With occupancies in the range of 50-60%, Fan has got the best start this year. The last movie to have received such an opening was SRK's Dilwale.

With positive reviews coming in and good word of mouth going around, Fan is expected to pick up more pace in the evening shows. As per early estimates, the film is bound to make anything between Rs. 20-25 crores on the first day, which is super for a non-holiday release. The weekend business is also expected to be strong.

The only hitch Fan may face is the strong completion from The Jungle Book, which continues to do well at the Indian box-office. After a fantastic opening weekend (Rs. 40.47) crores, the film continued to do well on weekdays and ended the week one with a high. The Jungle Book has earned a huge total of Rs. 74.08 Crores in just 7 days.

R Balki's Ki & Ka, starring Arjun Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan, also continued its steady run. At the end of week two, the film has crossed the 50 crore mark and has earned a hit status.

Looks like April is going to be a fantastic month at the movies.

'Fan' movie review: Shah Rukh Khan as Gaurav outshines superstar Aryan Khanna

  • 'Fan' poster
"Fan" to take a good start at the domestic box office. Pictured: SRK's Gaurav Chandana chases superstar Aryan Khanna in this new poster.Fan The Film/ Twitter

    Spoilers ahead

"Fan" gets easier to relate to when you are a Shah Rukh Khan fan.

Delhi-boy Gaurav Chandana's obsession with Aryan Khanna will make sense to you if you have done at least one of these things: Waited patiently outside SRK's palatial bungalow Mannat in the scorching Mumbai heat only to catch a glimpse of him, spread out your arms in the signature SRK-pose, screamed in excitement having spotted the actor's waxwork at London's Madame Tussauds, bought the flashy "COOL" chain he flaunted in "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" and have at least once said "Bade bade deshon mein aisi chhoti chhoti baatein hoti rehti hai Senorita." To be honest, I have done all of it.

What Gaurav seeks from Aryan is simple and never out-of-place; he only wants a five-minute meet and greet with his idol. But the admiration for his "God," as he lovingly calls him, exceeds levels of sanity after he is rebuked by the star and beaten up brutally by cops on his orders.

In between all the madness, Gaurav never forgets he is son to supportive parents Yogendra Tikoo and Deepika Amin as Mr. & Mrs. Chandana, respectively. Despite being in trouble, he makes it a point to let his family know about his whereabouts. That was probably to show that there wasn't anything off about him other than the fact that he is a staunch Aryan fan.

SRK as Gaurav convincingly plays the cold and calculative stalker and at times better than he did in "Darr" and "Anjaam." Swivelling around in a chair, Gaurav decides he will no longer chase the star. One can see the seething emotions in his eyes as he rips and scrapes posters off the wall, which was creatively done-up with every last photo of Aryan.

The first hour somewhat does justice to the genre. Although it was thrilling to watch Gaurav jump parapets while escaping police officials, fight an actor on the rise and shake Aryan's confidence that stems from his superstardom, tighter editing by Namrata Rao could have kept the pace from breaking on and off.

However, the plot starts to fall apart in the second half, where all they do is chase each other across continents. But the plus here is Manu Anand's camera work that lets you absorb the earthiness of Delhi's by-lanes, appreciate Croatian architecture and be charmed by the spirit of London.

A middle class boy spending money (he earned by selling off his internet caf) on foreign tours and keeping a track of the star's itinerary will leave you surprised. How does Gaurav know every minute details of Aryan's plans is something that remains a mystery. Every time Shah Rukh paid a visit to New Delhi, I would know about it the next day, from the papers. I guess that explains why I can never be a Gaurav.

Director Maneesh Sharma has written Gaurav well and what makes him real is his simple needs. He is innocent in believing that Aryan will love him back and entertain his demands. I have done worse - staring at Shah Rukh's poster thinking he will walk out of it one day and give me a hug; I was 8 then.

Maneesh scores with "Fan," because he has kept the relationship between the film's central characters subtle, as the usual fan-meets-star story would have not struck the right chord. On the other hand, he also toys with the idea of how vulnerable well-known people are when exposed to testing situations.

    High points

As promised by SRK, the VFX work is top-drawer. The scenes where the two of them confront each other are as real as it can get and not once did it seem that they were doctored on the editing table. The prosthetics is another aspect that works for film, but I would have liked it if Gaurav's overbite wasn't so in-your-face.

As anyone would think, a Bollywood film without a song can get a tad boring. But Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravijani have done a bang-up job of sprucing the narrative with music pieces, which feature aggressive tempo.

The opening visuals cannot be missed. Shah Rukh receiving his maiden Filmfare Award, dancing with carefree abandon to "Aisi Deewangi Dekhi Nahin Kahi" ("Deewana") and explaining why he is the best in the "Aaj Ki Adalat" interview with Rajat Sharma from 1993, will make any SRK fan nostalgic, and the ones in denial will find themselves indulging in the King Khan craze.

With "Fan," SRK proves why he is considered one of the finest actors in business. He plays Gaurav and Aryan with effortless ease, having the viewers believe that they have been portrayed by two different people.

Welcome back, Shah Rukh, the actor.

International Business Times, India rating: 4 stars.

1st Day 1st Show: Two JABRA Fans' Give Their Take on SRK's FAN

Aaqib Raza Khan and Urmi Bhattacheryya
    Today, an hour ago
    0more

    Here's our struggle.

We've just returned from a first-day-first-show outing to FAN (because, let's face it, what else is there?) - and we are struggling to hold back spoilers.

You see, it's been a week since THIS happened to us:

    And then THIS:

Needless to say, we believe our lives have changed. Just a little bit. Just a whole lot.

Shah Rukh Khan, the be-all and end-all of all that is good, merry and life-changing in the Bolly universe, SAID OUR NAMES! TWICE. Twice! We've rejoiced, whooped, shrieked, squealed, passed around the video like moohfali to whosoever cared to watch and basked in true, satiated fandom - and we're still not over it.

It was probably the culmination of a week of unabated exhilaration that found us booking tickets in a frenzy the minute BookMyShow signalled we could.

We paid, we high-fived, we were in.

We booked tickets to FAN the moment BookMyShow made it possible. (Photo Courtesy: YouTube screenshot)

Now, here are our two cents. The movie, without leading you on any longer, must be pronounced as psychotic brilliance'. What we mean by that, is that rarely since the early days of Anjaam and Darr, has Khan played such a darkly nuanced character. There are layers within layers - and then some more subterfuge layers. And they lie nestled in the characters of not one - but TWO Shah Rukh Khan's.

The more the merrier? You bet.

The two of us, high on Shah Rukh Khan and a shared fan consciousness, watched and absorbed in unison.

And yet, somewhere along the way - an hour into the second half - we reached a crossroads.

    We went our separate ways.

    Urmi's Take (Jabra Fan 1)

I loved, loved, LOVED the film. What's with the incessant need to feel everything must tie up (even if untidily) into a happily-ever-after? The fans (not!) who walked out of the theatre, cribbing about the ending were, in my opinion, hoping for an aant-bhala-toh-sab-bhala kind of finale. Let's face it, it doesn't happen.

But I couldn't care less. The movie is Shah Rukh Khan, par excellence - both as Gaurav, the star-crazed fan, and Aryan Khanna, who is basically SRK playing himself.

Shah Rukh Khan waves out to his fans - just like he does in the movie. (Photo Courtesy: YouTube screenshot)

Shah Rukh carried me through the entire film and didn't drop me once. No, the ending didn't disappoint me. It liberated me and set up an open ending where one speculates, regrets and hopes.

It both surprised me (and not), that I related to Gaurav the way that I did. Not simply because he's a hardcore Delhiite - but because of countless priceless Fan' moments scattered across the way for you to pick up.

When the camera pans in on SRK taking the high podium at Mannat on his birthday and waving down to screaming, fainting fans, you empathise with Aryan. One face in the midst of thousands.

When Gaurav cuts up photographs of his star, dances to his songs, grows up with a room filled with his cut-outs - you WILL empathise, regardless of whether you're an SRK fan or not.

Shah Rukh Khan plays the star and his own psychotic fan in FAN (Photo: YouTube/YRF)

FAN is real. Very. It sets you up for hope, love, disillusionment - and hope again.

    And I'd watch it again.

    Aaqib's Take (Jabra Fan 2)

During the last couple of years, Shah Rukh Khan got his fingers burnt with Dilwale, Happy New Year, Ra.One, and other forgettable films. Being a fan, it was painful to see him doing such roles after showing finesse in Swades, Chak De..., Kal Ho Na Ho.

Perhaps the list is endless, and so seemed the wait to see SRK back in his original avatar.

    And then came FAN.

The many moods of Shah Rukh Khan at the Fan song launch in Delhi. (Photo: Yogen Shah)

The movie definitely redeems Shah Rukh, the actor. From the enjoyable first-half to the pacy and complicated second-half, it's Shah Rukh that pulls the movie through and through. There are quite a few memorable moments - such as the first meeting between Gaurav and Aryan (goosebumps!).

Playing a dual character, you admire him for the nuances in the two personalities he brings to the screen. The passion, aggression and anxiety of the characters - obvious even through the prosthetic make-up. You could relate to both the characters, and that builds up an internal struggle for who's a better choice.

But the struggle doesn't lead to a satisfying conclusion. Post the interval, you see the superstar and his fan facing each other, in an already-stretched climax, and then the unexpected happens.

I sat blankly as the credits started to roll. I definitely wanted more in a shorter length.

Will I watch it again? I shall prefer to wait for Raees to see SRK again. Fingers crossed.

    Fan Movie Review

    3:27 pm April 15, 2016

One Shah Rukh Khan is enough to set the cash registers ringing, and when it's two, his ardent fans are bound to go berserk! When I first saw the trailer of YRF's Fan, I just couldn't stop at watching it once. I saw the trailer around 5-6 times in a span of 24 hours. I loved it so much! But when I saw the movie, my expectations which were sky high came crashing down!

    Plotline:

Delhi boy Gaurav is a diehard fan of superstar Aryan Khanna aka AK. Gaurav heads to Mumbai to meet his idol, but when things don't go as planned, he tries an alternate route to meet Aryan. However, AK is not pleased with the juvenile ways of Gaurav and talks to him rudely. A heartbroken Gaurav goes back to Delhi but soon decides to make Aryan apologise for his rude behaviour.

    Story Analysis:

Till date, we have seen the story of an obsessive lover, now we get to see the story of an obsessive fan. This is one thing that is unique about the concept. But there are a lot of loopholes in the execution. The fan is evidently shown to have a resemblance to the superstar, not an exact copy. Yet, there are scenes wherein people close to the star fail to distinguish between the two. Also, the screenplay should have been better; it's pretty stretched and the flow is very predictable.

    Direction:

Maneesh Sharma, the man who directed a gem like Band Baaja Baaraat, has helmed this flick. This time, however, his direction is very disappointing. How I wish he had paid attention to making the film more gripping and convincing. The editing should have been crisper. Also, notice a few continuity jerks; for example: Gaurav's expression when he's posing with Aryan's security guard for a selfie, and the same selfie at the end of the movie. Though the action in the movie is good, the thrill is missing. Even the cinematography is okayish, nothing exceptional.

    Acting:

Shah Rukh Khan does his best to keep Aryan and Gaurav as different from each other as possible; be it his voice modulation, the accent, the gait (chaal), everything. Waluscha de Souza is missable as Mrs. Aryan Khanna. Shriya Pilgaonkar makes a noteworthy debut as Neha, Gaurav's friend. Sayani Gupta, who is seen as AK's manager, is good in her role.

    Music:

The movie has only one song - Jabra - which was promoted as the Fan Anthem. And now, guess what! This song is missing from the movie! Yes, folks! There's no song in the movie.

Fan Movie Review - Final Verdict

Fan had a new concept, no doubt; but the lack of proper execution makes it a disappointing watch. Though the movie is a double bonanza for SRK fans, it is highly predictable.
