Rocky Handsome Movie Review: John Abraham steals the show with a punch!

If only director Nishikant Kamat could give us a concrete plot, Rocky Handsome would have been an entertaining watch!

Loosely inspired from South Korean action-thriller film The Man From Nowhere, director Nikshikan Kamat's Rocky Handsome, starring John Abraham in the lead role, is not exactly a gripping watch. Yes, it has action in it. Yes, it has John Abrahm with all his muscular self in it. And, yes, it has all the punches (and the kicks) that you have seen before in all slick Hollywood action films you have ever watched. But what it lacks is an interesting story that can keep you engaged and entertained. John gives everything he could ever present- the brawn, the brawl and the toned bod. (There's a glimpse of his bare buns also while he takes a shower, ladies!) But nothing quite holds your attention for long! In fact, one feels exhausted after watching the blood & gore, the action chops and a brooding Johny boy. One can't resist the temptation of comparing this one with Kamat's Vidyut Jawal starring action thriller Force. But While force was crisp and had the narrative that would keep you hooked, Rocky Handsome is all about action moves and less about the story. So while Abraham's character is seen kicking some serious butt throughout the movie, what the plot lacks is the much-needed bite! ALSO READ: John Abraham on What Sets Rocky Handsome' Apart from Typical Bollywood Action Films

The movie starts with John's character kept fiercely guarded under wraps. His past is as mysterious as the look he carries on his face ( and the sub-lot is so predictable). His only friend is a little girl named Naomi whose mother gets involved with a Mafioso who deals with drugs and organ harvesting. the mafia abducts the mother and daughter to get back stuff that Naomi's mother has stolen from them. John's character gets involved in this saga because Naomi is his only pal. The Handsome Rocky harbours this incredible guilt that he was never nice to Naomi when she needed him the most. John galvanises into action and employs every sinew to get this back in order. How does he do it? By flexing his muscles, by thrashing goons into pulp and by remaining honest to the storyline which is otherwise yawn-inducing! What's hot? The hand-fights on display is quite amazing. You can see the effort that John has put into it and he executes every frame in every action sequence with tremendous diligence and sincerity. He is getting better with action movie his doing. But even if you are a true John Abraham fan Rocky Handsome starts getting on your nerves with its repetitiveness. The huge positive is John Abraham. The man plays this tough, devoid of emotion character with remarkable conviction. You can the anguish and the scarred mind mind lying under the tough veneer. What's not? Nishikant Kamat plays a baddie but his character looks buffoonish in the end. The story is narrated in patches and in the the sub-plots have not been weaved convincingly. The dialogues are sloppy and they don't exactly serve purpose, let alone creating an impact. The whole hysteria and exaggeration is mind-numbingly boring!

Our verdict: Watch Nishikant Kamat's Rocky Handsome for John Abraham alone for his steals the show by delivering some serious punches!

Rocky Handsome
By Bollywood Hungama News Network, 23 Mar 2016, 19:51 hrs IST

With the long weekend in place, this definitely looks like a fun week for movies. On the films' front, this week sees the release of the action packed ROCKY HANDSOME that stars Bollywood's action hero John Abraham. While there have been many action films that Bollywood has witnessed, this week's release promises to be a bit different as it also shows a strong bond between John Abraham and a small girl. Will ROCKY HANDSOME prove to be a 'handsome' hit at the box-office or will it meet an ugly fate, let's analyze.

The film starts off with an extremely silent Rocky (John Abraham) buying fishes and flowers. The very moment he smells the flowers, the film goes into a 'flashback mode' followed by the introduction of Rocky's beautiful wife Rukshida Kabir Ahlawat (Shruti Hasan). When the movie is brought to the present day, a cute little girl by the name of Naomi (Baby Diya Chalwad) gets introduced. She is a frequent visitor to Rocky's pawn shop. On one such visit, when she starts conversing with the ferocious looking Rocky, she confesses that all her friends call him as 'Handsome' and that, she has been deliberately told to stay away from him because 'he had committed a crime', something that her heart refuses to believe. As days pass by, she opens up about her dreaded life before Rocky. She confesses that her mother (Nathalia Kaur) is a hardcore drug addict who gets beaten up always by some men. The unsaid bond of friendship gradually increases between the two and Rocky (without saying) becomes extremely protective about her. One fine day, when Rocky enters his shop, he becomes shell shocked to see that his shop has been broken into and that some men are driving away with Naomi in their captive. All of this leads to a deal that Rocky strikes with Naomi's kidnappers Kevin (Nishikanth Kamath) and his psycho brother. As per the deal, Rocky should deliver a certain (drug) consignment to an assigned place, in return of the freedom of Naomi and her mother. And when Rocky lands up at the assigned place for the delivery, he realises that the police has cordoned the area. What follows after that is oodles and oodles of violence including many merciless killings and brutal murders all for a single reason. Amidst all this, the police department discovers Rocky's past that shocks the daylights out of them. What is the reason for all the killings, what is Rocky's past and what reference has it got with his present, does Rocky become successful in tracing out Naomi and her mother... is what forms the rest of the film.

The film's director Nishikant Kamat, who has made varied films in the past like DRISHYAM, FORCE, MUMBAI MERI JAAN, brings an action packed entertainer in the form of ROCKY HANDSOME, which happens to be an official remake of the South Korean film THE MAN FROM NOWHERE). He has effortlessly blended style and content and has maintained a fine balance between jaw-dropping action and heart-rending emotions. One has to give it to the action directors for raising the bar for action films, with ROCKY HANDSOME. Full credits go to Nishikant Kamat, John Abraham and the film's stunt directors (Suniel Rodrigues, Kecha Kammpakdee)

ROCKY HANDSOME has a story (Ritesh Shah) that is extremely average, which could have been much better. The same holds for the film's screenplay (Ritesh Shah) that definitely could have been tighter at many places. Despite the fact that the film has a small runtime, the film's story and narrative looks highly disjointed at places, which may just act as a speed breaker with the audiences' likings. The film also sees many clichs, which just could have been avoided. The flip side is that the film boasts of some of the high-octane action drama (including the blood soaked action punches and gun fights) that Bollywood has never witnessed before. The film's adrenaline rushing action provides reasons enough to keep the audiences engrossed till the end of the film. The film's first half takes some time to firmly establish the plot; the real story starts post the kidnapping of the girl and her mother. One has to give it to the director Nishikant Kamath for having wonderfully combined nail-biting action in the song 'Teri Toh Yaad Sataye'. One word to describe the unusual combo of fight and song is 'outstanding'. The USP of the film, however, has to be its climax, wherein John Abraham enters the villain's den and the action that follows after that. One really has to applaud Nishikant Kamath for the way he has presented the film - extremely stylish.

As for the performances, it's an out and out John Abraham flick, in which he leads the way from the very start. Even though he may not have many dialogues in the film, his breath taking action is what does most of the talking. Readers may know that, ROCKY HANDSOME is his second film with Nishikant Kamath, the first being FORCE. With ROCKY HANDSOME, John Abraham (who can rightly be called as the 'soul' of the film), takes the film notches above what one has seen in his earlier films. He has very sensitively handled the strong bond of relationship between him and the little girl. Even the reason for which he saves the girl in the film seems extremely valid. In simple words, one can very rightly say that John Abraham has carried the film on his brawny shoulders, essaying a part that fits him like a glove.

He is followed to a close second by Nishikant Kamath himself, who does full justice to his villainous avatar. The conviction and the confidence with which he has acted in the film, he lands up spitting terror with a capital 'T'. Shruti Hassan, who has a special appearance in the film, does justice to whatever little screen time that she gets. Baby Diya Chalwad delivers a very innocent performance, which is bound to strike a chord with the cinegoers. The other actors help the film in moving forward.

Even though the film's music (Sunny Bawra, Inder Bawra, Ankit Tiwari) is average, it's the film's outstanding background score (Sunny Bawra, Inder Bawra) that makes the film feel very international. While the film's editing (Aarif Shaikh) is watertight, the film's cinematography (Shankar Raman) is superlatively spellbinding.

On the whole, ROCKY HANDSOME is for people who like action films. Despite the film having a simple plot, it has been garnished with engrossing drama and action stunningly. One can find the right mix of tension, action, emotion under one roof. A well-made action thriller!

A still from Rocky Handsome

Film: Rocky Handsome

Cast: John Abraham, Nishikant Kamat, Diya Chalwad, Nathalia Kaur, Sharad Kelkar, Teddy Maurya, Shruti Haasan

Director: Nishikant Kamat

Rating: ***

Narcotics, child trafficking, organ trade, drug mafia and brutal killings... Sounds scary and violent? Well, these are elements that add up to form Rocky Handsome. Ergo, don't expect only guns and goons. The Nishikant Kamat directorial is packed with high dosages of action, real stunts and multiple dark sequences.

And, amid the dark shades stands the silent hero"John Abraham as Kabir Ahlawat aka Rocky Handsome, who single-handedly smashes everyone, everything and every hurdle that comes his way while he sets on a journey to seek vengeance against drug traffickers and organ traders because they kidnapped his eight-year-old neighbour, Naomi, portrayed by Diya Chalwad, and sell every usable organ from her mother, Nathalia Kaur i.e. Ana's body before murdering her.

Beginning with a romantic track and flashbacks of precious moments that John spent with his lady love Shruti Haasan, who appears in only two songs and barely gets any screen time, the action thriller next highlights the tender equation between neighbourhood pawn shop owner John and Diya, one of his customers who calls him 'handsome' and spends time with him as her mother remains intoxicated most of the times.

The child actor adds the humane factor to the film aptly. For instance, when an upset Diya explains John why she can't hate him, her expressive eyes, innocent words and tender tears simply make you ignore John's almost impassive looks and silent act.

Literally, you can count the number of words that John utters in the film. He is a little too quiet and wears the same expression in almost every scene except a few. Yet, his toned body, tough attitude and exceptional fight sequences manage to impress.

Director Nishikant also makes his acting debut in Rocky Handsome. Sporting a bald look and French beard, he intelligently gets into the character of the bad guy Kevin Pereira. Nothing makes it appear like his first performance in front of the camera. He enacts every bit with ease. Similarly, Teddy Maurya as Kevin's brother, Luke Pereira, makes you truly hate the character. You actually feel relieved when he dies a brutal death. The other villain, Kazu Tang steals the show with his fighting skills, though acting-wise he didn't offer much.

Strangely, in his supporting role, Sharad Kelkar as Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) officer Sanjay Khapre somehow keeps reminding of his Saavdhan India act. Many other actors, like Suhasini Mulay, have a very small part. Their acts get overshadowed by the main antagonists.

While the film starts on a slow pace and then remains dotted with harsh and barbaric and brutal murders, the director tightly etches the second half. It is gripping and the mayhem continues in full force. Till the last scene, it boggles the mind and makes you cringe every now and then.

However, there are certain flaws"the sudden rainfall as John runs to save the child, the manner in which he survives even after being hurled by bullets and takes it out on his own, the way ANC officers send an email to Barack Obama from John's email ID in order to get his background details - which could have been avoided or toned down to make the film more real.

Remember Drishyam? Like his last film, Nishikant brings in tricky ATM withdrawals and draws a sequence reflecting how children are exploited by traffickers in their drug businesses which looks complicated and stretched and even gets confusing to an extent.

The focus should have been more on the story and less on action which sadly does not happen. Certain parts also could have been avoided and the violence almost gets into the nerves. John's past remains guarded which serves no purpose as such.

What surely works for Rocky Handsome, besides the high-octane action and murderous rampage by John and the baddies, is its cinematography. Shanker Raman chisels every scene finely and audience can't help but remain glued to the screen.

Unlike, the original The Man From Nowhere, there are multiple songs in the film. But, every number takes the track forward and provides a soothing effect in this dark narrative. Nora Fatehi's special appearance in Rock the party - the club song - is quite stunning. Even the background score when John and Teddy come face-to-face escalates the tension manifold. On the music front, Sunny Bawra and Inder Bawra hit the right spot!

In spite of all the filth, darkness and shrewdness, the film has a soul and you realise it only in the climax. John brilliantly emotes and reflects his agonies and pains, and manages to bring you to tears. Yes! He acts just before the film reaches the end.

And, truly justifying the title, whether fiddling with a knife, performing Aikido or Hapkido or Krav Maga or running around banging bad guys, in the perfectly crafted physique, wearing a black tuxedo, John looks nothing, but 'handsome'!

Well, Rocky Handsome is a cinematic treat if dark thriller is what pleases you!

'Rocky Handsome' - Movie Review
A still from 'Rocky Handsome'. Pic/Santa Banta
Rocky Handsome' has some interesting characters. Two Konkani-speaking bald brothers hamming their way through the worst of scenes, a precocious child (with hair that suspiciously looks like a wig), a lady who when drugged out behaves like she's orgasming, a cop who cracks bad jokes, a heroine who is so stereotypical that she is chirpy, wants to break into a song in the rains, and massages her tummy all the time when she's pregnant. This heroine (Shruti Haasan) is, mercifully, just playing a cameo.
Each character seems to be infused with so much annoying pep and energy that it seems like they are desperately trying to compensate for the deadpan expression with which Rocky Handsome (John Abraham) moves around.
An adaptation of Korean film The Man From Nowhere', Rocky Handsome' is about a man (John) who runs a pawn shop in Goa, but there is obviously more than what meets the eye. A little girl in the neighbourhood, Naomi (Diya Chalwad) befriends him and the otherwise dispassionate Rocky swings into action when she gets into trouble.
Now, he's in the clutches of the villains, the drug mafia in Goa, which includes a comical don (who seems as harmless as a Maharashtrian gent in a local train going to work), Kevin Periera (Nishikant Kamat), and his highly annoying brother (never mind who the actor is) who suffers from an acute case of verbal diarrhoea.
The movie is so busy falling over itself to look stylish and slick that it forgets to focus on the emotional aspect altogether. There is zero connect between the two central characters, Rocky and Naomi, and the script goes haywire at many places, but the director was evidently concentrating on making the movie look cool by getting the cameras go back and forth with heavy doses of flashbacks and slow-mos drizzled in between.
The only good part is its action sequences, which might have been directly borrowed from the original Korean film. It looks like John comes back to life every time he throws his punches around or breaks people's bones with absolute ease. His body, his personality and his moves make us want to believe that he can take on an army single-handedly. There is a fascinating character, Atilla (Kazu Patrick Tang), who seemed to have a lot of potential, but woefully, was given very little to do. More duels between Rocky and Atilla would have been a treat to watch.

Rocky Handsome Against Batman V Superman - Dawn Of Justice This Week
Thursday 24 March 2016 12.00 IST
Box Office India Trade Network
3

This week will see the battle of a Hindi thriller Rocky Handsome against a Hollywood superhero action fare Batman v Superman - Dawn Of Justice and with the later coming with a $250 million budget it is likely to tell even in the Indian market as the difference can be seen by the multiplex audience of big cities.

The Batman v Superman film may not be the event Hollywood film which does 80-90 crore as it looks on the darker side to what the Indian audiences like but it should have enough to take out the Hindi thriller Rocky Handsome as far as initial goes.

The advance booking of the Hollywood film is far ahead of Rocky Handsome at multiplexes of the major cities which will mean the competition will come in the smaller cities especially the Hindi market where Rocky Handsome will have to better Batman v Superman - Dawn Of Justice if it is to have any chance of making a mark. Both films will see a paid preview release on Thursday evening.
