PC has had a very successful career in Bollywood. Ash has had only a very few good films in Bollywood.
PC already has a hit show in America and a new film coming up in Hollywood. We can all say that Ash was offered certain Hollywood films but she didn't do those films for whatever reasons, but at the end of the day your career is made up of the films you actually did. It is not worthwhile to count the films that you didn't do. So, for that reason, PC has and is going to have a better career in Hollywood as well.

Bet Kareena would win.

Some ppl don't like Priyanka because they think she is fake.

I knew the arguments are going to be one sided because people's memory is short. I don't blame them though.. that's people's nature.

I don't want to underplay Priyanka's achievements. She is beautiful, a good actress, and has done really well for herself. However, saying she had a great Bollywood career whereas Ash hasn't is not right. Ash probably has the most "Best film" award winning films on her oeuvre. Also, Ash has hardly played flowerpot roles in movies the way PC has done in movies like Krrish, Agneepath, Chamku, Zanjeer, God tussi etc etc. Coming to performances, Priyanka's Barfi performance beats every other Ash performance. However, taking away Ash's excellent performances in films like Raincoat, Provoked, Chokher Bali, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Guru, Jodhaa Akbar, Guzaarish, etc wouldn't be right. In fact, I think if you purely count the number of hits, Ash has had more number of hits, but it would be unfair to compare because Ash started her career a few years before PC did. But PC saw very big phases of flops too. All this is convenient to forget because she is doing well right now whereas Ash has been majorly invisible for the past 5 years.

Coming to Hollywood, the major difference between both is that Priyanka went there with a clear cut strategy in mind. Music career, then TV show, then movies etc. However, with Ash, it was more of an accident. She was thrown out of movies in Bollywood because of the Khan crisis due to which she had to look elsewhere for work. We talk about TV shows, but she was offered HEROES, a major TV show back then which she didn't take up. So much hoopla is made about Priyanka's Oscars presentation (which is actually not surprising) and despite considering the fact that she is an ABC girl and is getting an advantage of that, but Ash was asked to present an Oscar way back in 2005, which she couldn't because of prior work commitments. And on top of all this, she has had inhibitions about intimate scenes and nudity, so much so that she never even sported a bikini in her whole career. And here we have Priyanka sign up for Baywatch, a film which Ash would never have signed. Heck, she refused Troy, Hancock, Seven Pounds, and so many other legit big ticket Hollywood films because of her own reasons.. Will Smith, then the no.1 HW star openly professed that he offered her three films but she keeps turning him down. Brad Pitt said he badly missed the chance of working with her in Troy and so on and so forth. These names are/were anytime bigger than Vin Diesel or Rock. But still kudos to Priyanka for making strides and following her dream.

Basically, the offers and everything were of a much greater degree for Aishwarya. 10-12 years later, when the world is more accepting of the Eastern faces, it has been relatively easier for Priyanka to make a mark. It is still appreciable, and it is only the beginning. Hope she makes a huge mark there. In fact, Priyanka is a lot more ambitious than Ash. It is a misconception that Ash was highly ambitious. The only thing she was passionate about is her craft, not Hollywood or fame. Nothing else explains her working in regional cinema when she had the biggest offers from the West and BW. Hence, to discredit the humongous success Ash has achieved is unfair. She wasn't awarded the most successful Miss World ever by the Miss World organization for nothing.

PC is making waves in HW now and it is really great to see what she is doing, but it was Ash who sort of brought Indian especially women into more of a mainstream in the US. This is strictly my experience so make of it what you will.
Most of the time, minority in the US means black or Latino. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese etc are lumped under Asian. That leaves Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi etc under a noman's land of South Asian. The reputation of the desi community is more about education and being smart than an actual beauty queen who was smart, articulate and beautiful, educated and still having values like living at home with her parents. Ash was that person. She was introduced in Oprah as the "most beautiful woman in the world". She had a series of interviews in main stream US media. David Letterman has a fearsome reputation. She gave as good as she got to him. She was rather snarky, but she did not come across as demure. Her wedding was mentioned as a headline in CNN. The whole Cannes jury thing.

One of the things from the NYTImes article about minority actors in which PC was mentioned was a girl telling her "thank you for making us relevant". PC is doing that in many ways now, but a decade or so ago it was Ash when I was just growing as a kid of Indian origin in the US. There was hardly anyone on TV, then there was Ash. Not on a TV show, it took years for that to happen, but to have someone like her on Oprah, Letterman, CNN was something for me. So I think in that way Ash opened doors which PC now walks through.

In my opinion to say that Aishwariya opened doors for Priyanka, is kind of undermining PC's hardwork to get the recognition she is currently receiving. It's easy to say Aish was offered X, Y and Z films under so and so banners with so and so stars..but the fact of the matter is she NEVER did any of those films. She NEVER did any TV show either. Does anyone here remember Aish by the films she rejected? No, they probably don't even know or care. So, how exactly did she pave way for PC?
Sure, Aish appeared on reputable talk shows..but then again, there was a reason for that - she was touted as the most beautiful woman out there. They didn't bring her on such shows because she was Indian or because she was some crazy, talented actress. Even if she was a Somalian actress but termed the most beautiful woman on earth, Oprah or whoever else would've STILL called her on her talk show. She would've also received numerous offers to endorse makeup etc and then film offers. The world only cares about the work you DO take up, not the rejected stuff you can boast about on the side which eventually ends up going to someone else.
The fact of the matter is that PC was determined to make a mark in the west. She worked hard. She has been juggling Bollywood and her projects in the west simultaneously. Most of us here were laughing at her when her music singles released and didn't even think her ABC show even had a small chance amongst the audiences here. No one bothered mentioning how Aish's paved path was going to be her lucky charm then..and now suddenly it was Aish who opened doors for her. No, I disagree..it's just PC's hard work, determination, talent and then some good luck on her side as well.

How did Ash pave way for PC ? Ash came on the international stage around 2002 I think. Halle Berry had yet to win her Oscar, the idea of beauty was white and blond still. Anything else was "exotic". Indian beauty especially was niche, not mainstream. It was not good enough to be a spokesperson of international brands especially cosmetics. Ash made Indian beauty mainstream. She was one of the many that defied the idea that beauty was white and blond or white and brunette. But it came in different shades and ethnicities. It is not just about movies or opportunities, sometimes it is just the ability for a group to be seen as "normal" and not exotic. I did not grow up as "normal" in America. Ash was responsible in a way for it, by making Indian beauty mainstream. It is like this, Lupita N'yongo is considered beautiful and is praised for her street and red carpet style. But it was not always so. She talks about growing up black and hating her skin color until she saw Alec Wek who was as dark as her modeling. Alec is not an actress, but is one of the first that was accepted that someone with that dark a skin could be considered beautiful enough for a fashion show. She, Iman and others blazed a trail for the idea that black could be beautiful and mainstream, not just exotic. That is why people accept as fact Lupita is beautiful just the way she looks, not because she is exotic looking.

PC could do all the hard work she can, try as hard as she can, but in an America where even today on Oscar day the debate about diversity and the lack of it is raging, it is because of people like Ash who opened doors for her to walk through. PC's achievements are her own, but for her to be accepted by an audience other than desi is because someone else opened that door. People like Persis Khambatta, Tabu who is a familiar name to art house movie lovers, Ash, Mindy Kalling, Archie Punjabi to name a few. PC may beat them all in achievements, but credit must be due to them for making it easier for PC to be seen as just a girl vs that Indian girl.

Everyone knows I dislike Priyanka and am I huge fan of Ash... but whatever I am about to say is unbiased.

Priyanka might have done a lot more professionally: Hollywood music, Quantico, Baywatch etc

But Ash is what she is because her personality, land who she is as a person and her looks Ofcourse . Ash is a celebrity first; and everything else second. It doesn't matter what Ash does onscreen... Because people love her offscreen. People are interested in her more offscreen. She's a celebrity above everything else. No matter how many flops she has or breaks she takes she still stands firm in her position. Her contemporaries have faded but Ash still stands.

The work Priyanka is doing is great. Professionally she is probably ahead of Ash. But again... Priyanka isn't an icon and probably won't be.

Priyanka and Ash are like Rihanna and Beyonc. Rihanna is number 3 on the lists of top number one singles she's only behind Mariah Carey and the Beatles! She's number 3 and that's huge... But Beyonc isn't even in the top 10!!! And we all know who and what Beyonc is! Enough said.
