Kareena on her khandaan, why she'd rather take off on a holiday than do any film out of insecurity and writing her book.Casually dressed in PJs and a tee, Kareena Kapoor settles down on a couch in the drawing room of her plush Bandra residence surrounded by photographs of her royal wedding and her many vacations with Saif Ali Khan. Ask her if she's enjoying being a royal in real life and she pouts, "Ufff, I'm not a Begum. My mother-in-law (Sharmila Tagore) will always be the eternal Begum of Pataudi. She is an amazing mother, wife and actor, gorgeous, worldly wise and energetic. We share a close bond. I love going to the Pataudi palace, it's now home for me."
Unlike her contemporaries Kareena, loves discussing the Kapoor khandaan. "Saif describes us as a crazy, Italian mafia family. There are always 30 dishes on the table and everybody is focussed on the food and drinks. My family is the best thing in my life and no matter which part of the world I am, I will always make it to birthdays and anniversaries. I feel most grounded and connected, when my grandmother (Krishna Raj Kapoor) is around," she smiles.
But there's been a break-up in the family, with cousin Ranbir Kapoor and his partner Katrina Kaif going their separate ways. But Bebo won't be drawn into a discussion on the subject, "Even if Ranbir has spoken about it to me, it's a personal matter that I'd never discuss it with the media. I love my brother and wish him only the best in life, always," she says with a cheeky twinkle.
Most relationships in the industry are crumbling today. You wonder if happily married Kareena has found the key to what makes a marriage work? "There's no formula. Sometimes after 20 years, a relationship just doesn't work, you meet someone else and something just clicks," she sighs, admitting that even though relationships and movies are discussed at family gatherings, it is a strict no-no on Bebo's dining table. "We don't only socialise with industry folk, in fact, we don't even attend Bollywood parties or film screenings."
She has rejected over six scripts in the last three months, including Raj Kumar Gupta's Section 84 in which she was to play a schizophrenic and Sanjay Gupta's revenge-drama Kaabil opposite Hrithik Roshan. "Yes, I have become choosy, I don't want to do films back-to-back. I am not insecure, I'd rather go off on a holiday with Saif," she says.
In R Balki's quirky romcom, Ki and Ka, she plays an ambitious career woman with a stay-at-home husband. She was holidaying in London when Arjun Kapoor called her and started talking about a new film he'd just signed. "I had watched Cheeni Kum and Paa and was extremely happy for him. A week later, Balki offered me the same film," Kareena reminisces, admitting that she was initially unsure but halfway into the reading, she was on board. "We were like two kids on the sets and Balki would scold us, tell us to stop talking and laughing so he could shot."
She insists, she's extremely picky and choosy about her projects because she wants to have fun through 70 days of the shoot. "I am not a part of any particular camp, I just want to chill and be comfortable while I shoot. I even said yes to Abhishek Chaubey's Udta Punjab for the same reason. The film excites me as an actor," she says.
Why did she not want to play Priya Dutt in Rajkumar Hirani's Sanjay Dutt biopic, with Ranbir Kapoor playing the actor? "I don't know where this bizarre rumour came from. I don't bother clarifying these things because I don't think anyone cares. I don't even know who's making the film or who's in it," she retorts.
She says she will not kick-start any new project till June, 2016 and would rather explore exotic destinations. "I tend to go back to the same places. I'm not a bag-packer and enjoy travelling in luxury. I'd like to visit south of Italy, the Aurora Borealis - Nothern Lights and the Grand Canyon," she says. "I can't sing and don't wish to direct or produce, but I'd definitely want to write my autobiography."
