Hello.
Band Bajaa Baarat. I'd known very little of it before we went to see it, and I was totally blown over by how well-made it was, how every detail, every nuance was well-worked out. Also, it still remains one of my favourite movies because it showed the female lead as more mature - emotionally and professionally - than the male lead. She even moves on practically, instead of rueing what cannot be. When he think she must be doing it for revenge, she is typically irritated "what revenge?", i.e. how self-centred can you be?". It is still one of my favourite moments in film love stories.

Definitely Band Baaja Baaraat. I had heard it was Anushka and some new guy in it, and I didnt really care for her, and thought it would be some boring Yash Raj film. But when I saw it, damn Ranveer, Anushka, and the story blew me away! It's definitely one of my favorites and I think it's their best performance individually as well.

^BBB revived my interest as a 'fan' in BW. One of the best surprise successes in the last few years. I think only Queen topples it in terms of how little/nothing was expected of a movie and how much more it delivered.

Very recently, I think I was surprised by Bajrangi Bhaijaan. One of my neighbours came over and was enthusiastically recommending the movie a month or two after it had released 😆 I thought it was most probably overhyped/overly sentimental as tends to happen with big movies, but when I watched it eventually, it was pleasantly impactful and much more universal/touching than I'd imagined. Has more to do with my low expectations than anything about the movie (scale, hype, trailer, etc.) though!

Udaan. Watched this one very randomly while bunking a class. Had very little interest and absolutely no idea about the story, but we had nothing better to do at that point so went ahead and oh boy! the movie had such strong impact on me, I was reeling under its effect for a couple of days after I watched it. It was so beautiful, the dialogues, the songs, the actors and everybody was unknown to us. A bunch of unknown names made such a fabulous and impactful film. I went on recommending it to many fellow students as it was some sort of hidden treasure that people need to get access to. 😆

Also, Udaan (and DevD) are the two films why I watch small budget/less known films in theaters today. So that makes this one even special.

Khosla ka Ghosla : Didn't know much about the movie per se, but loved the song Chak de Phattey! So watched the entire movie on TV once and I was surprised as to how good it was. Also it was one of the first movies which portrayed Delhi in a certain way, minus the India Gate and a couple of other must haves. It was so freaking good. The comedy, the situations everything was handled so amazingly well, very refreshing.

There were movies like Queen, Vicky Donor, English Vinglish, Kahani which were surprising but then the positive word for these films spread like fire in just a couple of days and I knew that these films would atleast make for a decent watch(I ended up loving them is a different matter), so not unexpected in that sense.
