I dont think much has changed at ground level in India. We are as tolerant or intolerant as we used to be. The incidents of intolerance used to happen even earlier but never really got highlighted in the media as it is being now. I do feel though fringe elements like Uma Bharati, Vijayvargiya have become emboldened in making tall statements for publicity as they know the media will highlight them. The intolerance, award wapsi etc all crops up around election time with renewed force so obviously there is an agenda from the opposition too.
But tolerance or prejudice is a slow process. Repeated highlighting and discussion in the media and social media could end up changing this. Like here:
#BoycottDangal: This is how Twitteratis reacted to Aamir Khan's 'never said India intolerant' comment
Mumbai: Bollywood actor-producer Aamir Khan's attempt to water down a huge controversy he kicked over the intolerance issue in 2015 has evoked a sharp response on microblogging website Twitter.
On Monday, the actor said he had no plans to leave India and he can't live more than two weeks out of the country.
"I love my country, I was born here and I will die here. I have never thought of leaving India and will never take such a step," Aamir told reporters while celebrating the 10th anniversary event of 'Rang de Basanti' here.
"I never said India is intolerant or I want to leave the country... these two things have been said to everyone. So, obviously, people will get hurt and I understand their emotions. I am not surprised they are angry with me. But, there is no truth to this all...," the 50-year-old actor said.
Notably, the actor is currently shooting for his next film 'Dangal'.
On Twitter, Khan's statement ahead of the release of his next film 'Dangal' has evoked criticism:
