Wazir Has Good Growth On Saturday
Sunday 10 January 2016 01.00 IST

Wazir has shown good growth on Saturday as collections look set to be in the 7.25 nett range. The growth will be around 35% from the first day. It is lopsided growth with big multiplexes in metros jumping 50% while other multiplexes outside metros showing lower jumps. There was no growth in single screens but its collections in single screens are also very low with maybe just 10-12% of its total business coming from single screens.

The second day number would have been ideal for its opening day collections but still the second day number puts it in a better position than after its first day business.

Similar growth on Sunday would really put the film in a good position but as the film is limited in appeal it would be a big surprise if its repeat performance on Sunday.

Watched the movie today

No spoilers

What is good:

Acting: I would say that this movie a must-watch for performances alone. Amitabh Bachchan is excellent, Farhan fit the role perfectly, Aditi Rao Hydari is apt, Manav Kaul's eyes do scare you. Neil in a menacing even in that short time-frame he is on screen.
I thought Farhan underplayed Daanish to perfection. In his scenes with Omkarnath, Daanish plays second fiddle, does not act as the hero. I expected Farhan to play someone (mentally)stronger, but I guess he was supposed to look weaker, he was supposed to learn to learn and not learn to win.

Dialogues: The first half has excellent dialogues (almost all said by Amitabh's character), some funny, some thought-provoking and some philosophical. I don't remember any recent movie with such strong (non corny, non melodramatic) dialogues.
PS: The short dialogue exchange about drinking Russian vodka in a Russian bar with a Russian woman is really funny... that whole scene is excellent

Music: I wasn't impressed with the sound-track before I watched the movie, but the songs do really fit very well with the narrative and don't overshadow the story. The end credits with AB and Farhan singing Atrangi Yaari is cool.

What is not:

Climax: Underwhelming. I would have preferred if the movie stopped at the scene where Farhan is watching the children enact the play, instead of the 'explanation' of the events/motives at the end.

Suspense: There isn't really any. Although the first half is really very good, the placing/timing of some key revelations and clues is off. It was easy to guess any probable ending of the movie and the motives of the characters. The second half did not meet the expectations that the first had set.

All in all: I would recommend watching this movie: for the acting and the first half. Just don't go in expecting a thriller. And, I can't put my finger on it, I don't know why, but it did not feel like a Bejoy Nambiar film. I would rate it 2.5-3 out of 5, almost all of it for the acting.

Wazir Falls Flat On Sunday

Wazir has fallen flat on Sunday and is unlikely to show much growth. The film will gross 7.50-7.75 crore nett on Sunday which is growth of 5-10%. The weekend business will be around 20 crore nett. The Saturday growth was a bit of a surprise even though it was mainly premium multiplexes in metros as public reports were poor but with the Sunday audience not really coming for the film means its a big struggle now.

The business will be best in Mumbai and Mysore with the former grossing around 6.50 crore nett. The mass circuits be it Gujarat or CP Berar are dull and they did not even improve much on Sunday.

The film sort of flattered to deceive on Saturday but with the Sunday figures it looks like the first major release of the year will be a flop unless something drastic happens on Monday. Its unlikely the clear two week run will help much.

Sad to break it out but I think January will only have 1 or 2 clean hit and both will be sex comedies

Kya Kool Hai Hum 3 will be a definite hit followed by lil chances of Mastizaade

Airlift deserves success but it's too big budgeted and genre is too dark for general audience unless the WOM surprises us
