American audiences are not as stuck up as the desis in the desh and abroad about various accents. The desis think their own accent is all fine and dandy and want to look down on accents from other regions. They think Americans will view their their superior accent as great and the ones they make fun of as worthy of scorn. The same Desis who made fun of Kangana's accent, when no one in the big cities of US would have made fun of her accent or considered her to be so inferior to other Indian accents.
Deepika too, she is just another Indian accent. Not like the stuck up desis who want to diss on certain accents when to Americans they are all going to be Indian accents. Deepika's articulate enough and there is no problem with her grammar and syntax.
If Indian actors need to work and tweak their accents, it goes for all and not specific to Deepika as all the desis who want to look down on her accent want to keep claiming.
Americans will hear an accent and just hear an Indian accent. They will be just as accepting as they are of the other natural Indian accents in Media (etc Raj, Big Bang Theory).
Americans are far better than stuck up Desis. There was a time, yes, when Indians faced ridicule generally. And it wasn't limited; it included the accents of the snobs who want to snigger at the likes of Kangana and Deepika. When Indian accents faced and face ridicule, all did and do. But generally now and the past 10 years, go to NY, other big cities--and also smaller cities and towns--with Deepika's or Kangana's old accent, no one would be sniggering. Cannot be said the same of certain Indian cities or the Bollywood snobs.
