The Khans have ruled the industry for the past 3 decades. They were at the top 3 since their young days. But as new debutants came along - Hrithik, Abhishek, Imran, Ranbir - people thought they'll be the next generation of Bollywood kings. But none of them achieved Khan-status.

Hrithik was an overnight sensation, but things mellowed out for him only giving occasional hits here and there.

I guess people had high hopes for Abhishek, but couldn't achieve close to his father's (or the Khans') success.

Imran looked promising in the beginning, but now has faded into oblivion.

Ranbir has a decent career, but not enough to rule Bollywood like the Khans.

More recent newcomers like Ranveer and Varun seem to be doing well so far, but only time will tell if they can achieve the same level of success.

But as for the rest, what went wrong? Will we have any actors as big as the Khans in the near future? Please share your thoughts.

Because the Khans are still around..who will go for duplicates when the originals are around. Anyways the Khans too never reached Big B level of success even after 30 years. So its a matter of perception. Maybe after 30 years even this much success will seem great.

True, but Big B was the top leading hero of the 70s and 80s, but not the 90s. Khans are still the top heroes today. The later generation have not nearly interested me as much. I think it's a combination of different things. I think it's a combination of not having the talent, making wrong career choices, not good roles available, and probably not trying hard enough.

Hrithik had a lot of potential, but he got typecast after KNPH and didn't experiment with different roles. He did too much of the loverboy thing, which lead to flops.

The Khans have set the bar really high and are tough to beat.

I think the turning point will be in the next 5 years or so, where Khans will slowly start to do only one release a year like Mr. Bachchan, they might still rule the box office even in that one movie, but they are already kind of doing that aren't they? They are down the climax hill now though...GIVE IT 5 years...

OOO another thing is the POPULARITY OF KHANS was greater, because they would have more than one or two releases per year in their young days...MORE movies = more fans = everlasting worship... RIGHT now young actors start out with one/two films per year, because the filmmaking process and quality of films has changed. I think in the future there will be no such monopoly as the Khans but more so a variety of talent that is role specific rather than roles that are made for the actors.
