On topic, I think Kangana could have also pulled off Mastani or Kashibai well. When SLB was casting for BM (latter 2013), Kangy was nowhere in the picture like how she is now. He would have certainly considered her as an alternative...

Oh you're right, Kangana could've done it. I remember in OUATIM she looked so regal in those olden day outfits! She would've gotten into character. Also she's worked a lot on her dancing I think she could do that too. Like in tanu weds manu those expression changes during the songs were awesome

She's not a very good actor but her beauty saves everything

deepika can play any role really-she can play anything from the range of a girl next door to mastani now. anushka or any of the newcomers could never pull off a role like mastani-but deepika could do a ladies vs. ricky, or an aashiqui 2. Deepika is classically beautiful too and therefore along with the other attributes required for the character-that is what the character needs. Plus SLB has worked with ash, madhuri-it makes sense why he chose deepika in terms of the beauty quotient atleast.
