Why he's calling it a web film? Aren't they gonna release this as a series?
With just a day since the release of the trailer giving us a rib-tickling glimpse of forthcoming web series, Bang Baaja Baaraat', the new venture has already struck a chord with audiences, garnering over 72,000 views in less than 24 hours, which seems more than decent, considering it deviates from the typical family dramas that audiences are generally used to.
The makers, Anand Tiwari and Amritpal Bindra, who have written, directed and produced the show for Y Films, which is a youth wing of Yash Raj Films, said that they were keen that their script revolved around a wedding, considering that marriages are a major part of Indian culture, bringing together families, no matter how much commotion that big day demands.
"Weddings are a big part of Indian culture and everyone loves weddings. However, we wanted to take a fresh perspective on weddings. Therefore we deiced to create a really crazy wedding where a lot goes wrong between two dysfunctional families," wrote Amritpal over mail.
Bindra who runs a production house, Still and Still Moving Pictures, along with director Anand Tiwari, wanted to depict the not-so-smooth side of putting together a wedding and all the stress that goes behind it, which mostly goes unseen in Bollywood cinema.
"The attempt was to break the typical romantic, pious and pure feeling around weddings, which is generally how they have been depicted in our cinema. But it was still important to create characters that were lovable and relatable. Despite limited means we were clear that the show must look like a film and needs a scale that would give it a feeling of a big crazy Indian wedding," write Amritpal.
Breaking away from the usual trend of big budget releases, Still and Still Moving Pictures have opted for a web series quite like The Viral Fever boys' Pitchers', which has also garnered a huge fan following.
Amritpal says, "We are a young content creating company that is very bullish about the future of fiction content on the digital medium. The idea is to provide very high quality content at very efficient costs. The audience for this kind of content is growing rapidly and with the penetration of smartphones and consistently improving broadband levels the sky is the limit."
Quite secure with their choice of reaching out to audiences in the unconventional way, the duo aren't afraid of competition from the big releases. "We are in this for the long haul and firmly believe if we are able to provide very entertaining content, then there is really no threat from big budget releases. Infact, if the film industry doesn't start reworking their economics I think they are the ones that need to fear well executed digital content."
Bang Baaja Baaraat' stars Fukrey' actor, Ali Fazal, Ayesha Raza, Gajraj Rao, Rajit Kapur, Shernaz Patel, Preetika Chawla, Priyanshu Painyuli, Neil Bhoopalam and newcomer Angira Dhar.
