Salman Khan killed an animal, too. In India. He's roaming free...

Ok let me clarify one thing over here regarding Yakub . People who held candle light were asking for him not to get hanged, Thats because some people are against capital punishment on principals. That doesn't mean they were supporting him or asking him to be free. The ones who joined his funeral procession were all of his family , the extended family ( underworld and their family most probably) neighbours and all other supporters who thought he was innocent.

OT:
Killing of any animal be it endangered or not is wrong, but then people have no qualms killing chicken, goat, lamb, sheep, alligator, rabbit, frogs, snakes, cows, buffaloes, etc to eat. Just killing & selling is not enough to they are tortured and killed and sold. YT vids available
If its just hunting for fun (which does happen & is legal in a lot of places) and if you are fool enough not to know what to hunt or not to is foolish, not criminal but foolish.
But for me personally the worst & inhuman is torturing these animals, having fun looking at their misery for many hours. Just bcoz u have them in chains or trapped and they cant even call out for help.

You've probably heard leopards have been encroaching in some villages in India coz jungles have been cut down. Some people call a zoo or something and trap them and take them away. But then there are those who trapped a rare leopard and burnt it alive and stood around watching it suffer to death, cheering like they've done something big. There are videos online about this if anyone wants to see. I dont think or know that any of these were caught ever. So Salman being brought in a topic speaking about a serial hunter who also happens to torture them is not cool
