BRIDGING THE GENDER GAP

R Balki's summer romance which rolls on August 3 finally has a title, Ki and Ka, and is about breaking stereotypes.
If you've watched Shamitabh, you'd know the mystery behind the title of the film by now. By bringing together the names of both the film's protagonists, Dhanush and Amitabh Bachchan, filmmaker R Balki gave the plot another, more profound dimension.
His upcoming romcom revolves around Kareena Kapoor Khan who plays a corporate honcho. Arjun Kapoor is her stay-athome husband who puts his culinary skills rather than his management degree to good use while she attends board meetings. This is the second time Arjun will be seen as an MBA, after Abhishek Varman's 2 States.
And after weeks of brainstorming, Balki has come up with another intriguing title, Ki and Ka, and not Kaki as has been widely reported. And before you start thinking Ka is short for Kareena or Kapoor, the filmmaker is quick to assert that this time he's not playing on the names of his actors.
Kareena is called Ki while Arjun is Ka. Balki points out that 'ki' and 'ka' are derived from common Hindi words which define gender eg, uski, uska, iski and iska. "In Hindi not just human beings but also nonliving objects have gender. Everybody and everything is categorised. But this film, like the couple's marriage, underlines the fact fact that Ki and Ka as genders don't matter," he explains. "Bebo and Arjun play a Delhibased couple. The film is all about breaking gender stereotypes," reveals a source close to the development.
The film rolls on August 3 in Mumbai and is slated to release in mid-2016. The lead actors were spotted at Mehboob Studios last week, after a look test. Kareena looked chic but plain, without makeup or jewellery. Arjun looked sporty with a beard, moustache and glares. According to a source on the sets, Kareena, unlike her desi girl avatar in the just-released Bajrangi Bhaijaan, will look stylish in trousers and jackets, like any upscale working woman. There was talk of her cutting her hair short and colouring it golden-brown, but the source refutes this.
Meanwhile, Arjun smiles, "An amazing, ambitious lad-Ki meets a unique, fascinating lad-Ka. It's a bright, summer romance."
