Cinematographer Aseem Mishra, who is currently enjoying the success of his recent release Bajrangi Bhaijaan, talks about the challenges and rewards of shooting this large-hearted but simple film
ON KABIR KHAN
Kabir and I work in sync as we go backa long way. We are from same school of cinema. We both come from a documentary background and both of us used to work with Saeed Naqvi on a programme called It's A Small World. So we used to travel all over the globe and shoot documentaries, and that's how our sensibilities match so well. We have worked together in New York, Ek Tha Tiger, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Phantom.
ON CAPTURING INDIA
We decided that since it is a very simple film, the camera work should also be simple. There was no place for aggressive camera work or no place where I could play with moody lighting.
SHOOTING ON A TIGHT SCHEDULE
Just after Phantom, we started working on Bajrangi Bhaijaan. We must have had 2-3 months of pre-production, when we did an intense recce. We had a 10-day gap between each schedule. We shot in Karjat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Delhi and Kashmir, so we were shooting back-to-back.
MANAGING THE CROWD
Obviously, we didn't shoot in Pakistanand we shot the Pakistan section in Mandawa in Rajasthan. We made the village look like Pakistan and the art department did a fabulous job of creating the sets. Mandawa was an easy shoot for us despite Salman's presence. The locals did not harass us and, in fact, made us very comfortable. It was the same in Kashmir, where the locals helped us shoot without any chaos. Shooting in Delhi was very difficult. We were shooting the scene where the travel agent and the girl travel in a cycle rickshaw. There was a crowd of 10,000 that had gathered outside the location. It was crazy but the next day, the Delhi police helped us. The best audience we had was in Kashmir.
SHOT IN DAYLIGHT
We shot most of the film in daylight but we had very little time to capture some of the shots as the weather would suddenly change. We captured most of the opening shots early in the morning and evening. The scene where Shahida goes missing and where her family searches for her was done at the end of the day as it was a twilight shot and the scene required shooting on a slope, which was very difficult. We used to shoot that scene every day while coming from the Aru Valley. Shooting in Kashmir was very difficult as the light kept changing. There were so many challenges, including getting the right reactions from child actors. So hats off to Kabir, who did a fabulous job.
SHOOTING THE CLIMAX
That was the most amazing experience. We were shooting the border scene, where we had a huge crowd, and we had to capture everyone's emotions and keep the energy high. It was a challenge due to the location being snow capped mountains.
PLAYING MORE ATTENTION TO EMOTIONS
Kabir gets involved with his actors to brief them about the emotions. We use only use two cameras when we shoot action and a crowd and just one camera to shoot intimate scenes. I must say that Nawazuddin Siddiqui has done an outstanding job in the film and he also offers plenty of inputs.
ON A HATTRICK
I have been lucky that most of my directors have repeated me and that all my films have done well. Bajrangi Bhaijaan is my third film with Kabir and also with Salman. I try and choose only those films that make me happy.
