But people do remember Sholay, Suhaag, AAA! That's due to popularity and BO is just that - measure of how much people watched your film.
Lagaan might win polls but in reality nobody gave a damn about it. Gadar kept shattering records without any publicity whereas Lagaan was the most marketed movie of that year. Gadar still gets good ratings on TV. Internet polls don't reflect a thing about films. They might declare Devdas as the movie of the millennium though people remember SRK most for DDLJ, DTPH, KKHH, Baazigar etc.
Jai Santoshi Maa is an obscure film because it has no big stars and has an outdated story. But it is remembered till date due to its massive popularity and BO.
Online or in so called critic circles you may rant on Anand but in real life, people are crazy about Aradhana and its songs till date.
Haiders, Lunchboxes, Dhobighats have no takers except for select section of audience.
People talk of quality? How many remember Anjali? That was a superior and more real film than TZP. But they remember TZP due to its popularity.
BO doesn't matter is just an excuse to cover failure to attract public.
If a film is a hit then it is hit for a reason. It means it was watched and liked. And if an actor has consistently given hits then it means public likes him enough to repeatedly turn up and watch him. He is worth their time and money. And obviously worth it for the producer.
If people rarely come to watch your work then you are just another brick in the wall. No big deal.
