Movie Review - Dil Dhadakne Do - Quirky Family Gone Fishin

Synopsis: Zoya Akhtar is the director who is known for going for plots that have plenty of drama, and yet has high quotient of comedy too. The film Dil Dhadakne Do comes back after a hiatus of ZNMD. The plot revolves around the rich dysfunctional family of Meheras. Kamal Mehera (Anil Kapoor)is the businessman who is running a sinking plastic manufacturing company and yet values his lifestyle and status a lot. He cannot stand his wife's weight issues and constantly nags about it. Neelam, his wife played by Shefali Shah is a woman who is taunted for making unhealthy oily food and who is in love with her Louis Vuitton bags. The couple shows off that they love their children, Ayesha played brilliantly by Priyanka Chopra and Kabir played excellently by Ranveer Singh have their own troubles in life. Ayesha is struggling in a love-less marriage and her priorities are getting crushed, in spite of achieving a lot professionally and even get snubbed by her own mother Neelam who feels that she should rather have a baby instead. Ayesha's problems also include managing her irritating mother in law played by Zarina Wahab and she finds peace on the shoulder of Sunny played by Farhan.

Ranveer is forced by his parents to marry Noorie, the daughter of a rich business magnate as they see this as a way out of their own business failure. Kabir is trapped because he is in love with the free spirited dancer, Farah played by Anushka. A lot of complications and plenty of motley of characters on the ship and many unhappy relationships and confessions lead to the movie for every movie buff. Zoya is earnest in tackling the issue that is so naturally covered up in every Delhi's nouveau riche family and how the Meheras tackle it. Ranveer's dialogue sums up the entire film, where he shouts out to his parents, "Yahaan toh sab upar upar se baatein kartein hain" leading to the parents realize that all's not well in the lives of their children. But there is no sad moment here in DDD unlike typical Hindi tearjerker family drama film!

Performance: Anil Kapoor is the fit and suave businessman who wishes to see his children settled and see his son get married to a rich businessman's daughter. He lusts after other pretty women but ignores his wife. Shefali Shah should do more films and we are glad she has done a full-fledged role after a long while. Ranveer is looking handsome and is a little introvert guy who does not really have the guts to stand up against his family as he is being pushed for a marriage of convenience by his father. Priyanka is the poor girl who is trapped in a marriage and does not want to stay in it anymore. She is also troubled by her mother in law and yet, she finds love in Farhan Akhtar. Anushka Sharma gets to pair up with her Band Baajaa Baraat co-star and her ex-flame, Ranveer Singh after a long time and she too justifies her role as a dancer who loves Ranveer who is not able to get married to her.

Analysis: The movie Dil dhadakne Do is shot mostly on a cruise in the Mediterranean and where ZNMD was a tour de Spain, the Dil Dhadakne Do is one about the coastal areas of the Mediterranean. The film is about the fake lives and the loud lives that the almost bankrupt Meheras who look beyond their children's lives and try to assume everything is fine with their lives. They show off and in front of their so-called friends, they try their best to be their best selves too. Direction and cinematography cannot get any better and all the actors need an applause but it is Anil Kapoor and then Ranveer Singh who stand out due to their performances. The title song, sung by Farhan Akhtar him self and Priyanka Chopra is already popular. The film also has the romantic Pehlibaar that is being played in radio stations too. Overall, the film is ideal for those who love to lose themselves in a witty movie with fake accents and fragile relationships!
