I always preferred Asha.

Lata has a melodious voice. One of the best Indian voices ever. She lacked depth and range though.

Asha's voice quality was not that high. But she more than compensated with depth and range. She could convey impishness, playfulness, flirtatiousness and a wide variety of emotions in her song with utter ease. Lata struggled with that.

I prefer Asha, I feel she is more versatile.

Its funny though how in old movies, lata always used to sing the sati savitri sad numbers and asha was always given the vamp songs/ item numbers.
