BW has been famous abroad even before SRK was born. Raj Kapoor started that revolution and was the icon of making Hindi cinema an integral part of India'a soft power.

No one knows Raj kapoor outside India...SRK is much more popular abroad ...Facts are Facts ..But whatever

Plus I never said that BW wasn't famous before SRK ..obviously it was famous but SRK made it much more popular Globally ...His movies earns more more In abroad than any other actor from India..it says a lot

2004 RTL 2 (German TV) broadcasted K3G, that was the big bang for BW in Germany. It's legend, history between german fans. 😉

Raj Kapoor was the biggest Indian actor abroad. Craze in Russia, China and many other European countries. Amitabh Bachchan is a religion in Egypt, Israel, West Indies and was extremely popular in Russia, Indonesia and UK also. Indonesians have even made a film on his name, a story about a little boy who is his big fan and wants to go to India to meet him. Rajinikanth is a cult in Japan and Taiwan. Aamir Khan is extremely popular in China, Indonesia, Malaysia and South Korea. Mithun is popular in Russia and in Japan he has a temple dedicated to him. Rajesh Khanna used to be very popular in Spain. Dharmendra was a cult in Nigeria and even his under performers like The Burning Train became huge hits there. Salman Khan is popular in Middle East.

It's a fallacy that only SRK made Bollywood global.

Infact it was YRF that did by expanding their distribution. And they thought of tapping overseas market after tremendous success of Silsila and Lamhe abroad.

Raj Kapoor has been making it to global lists before SRK was even born. So much for nobody knowing Raj Kapoor outside India!

Guess some people never look beyond their burrows.


BTW, overseas collections of pre 90s films were not mapped extensively. So collections cannot be compared. And as of last few years, Aamir's movies make more than anyone else overseas and only 1 of them is a YRF film, otherwise he made it without YRF which has amazing penetration in international market.

Lastly, Amitabh Bachchan received the same award last year, so it is a given how other global icons exist besides SRK.

Germany is the only representative of the whole globe whole world? 😆

FYI, Indian movies started releasing officially in Germany only after success and Oscar nomination of Lagaan.
It was that film which paved way for K3G's release. It is even mentioned on German Bollywood fansites.

Satyajit Ray and Guru Dutt are the only ones who international media and industry take seriously.
Ray is among world greats and his films are part of syllabus in universities across the world.

He and Guru Dutt are the only Indian filmmakers in American Film Institute and Sight & Sound magazine's Greatest filmmakers of all time lists and their films are the only Indian films that make it to greatest films of all time in the world lists.

Infact there are legends we know less about because of lack of PR. Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah have won international level awards for acting and were praised by likes of Tom Hanks. Om Puri is the first Indian actor to receive OBE. But since masala based Bollywood media doesn't like to cover it much, so it goes unnoticed.

Who can forget Madhubala being covered by international media just at the age of 17? They called her the biggest star in the world back then. All this without any PR unlike today's stars.

It's no different from how Ranveer or Ranbir fans say that Khans became stars only after 30 years! Mostly people go by current hype or fandom and don't bother to clear all facts and check a bit of history.
