I'm a fan of a football team that almost always makes it to the super bowl, but they can't win it all the time. As a sports fan, you must understand that. And a lot of people are a fan of the players first too and then the sport. If I have the slightest interest in sports it's because of players like Tendulkar, Brady, Beckham.
Sorry.
The interest in the sport is due to ABILITY of players like Sachin. Not just the player himself.
This is not like films where someone likes you maybe for looks, style, charisma or your self made story only and might excuse your poor acting and poor choice of scripts etc.
Play exceptionally well, you get attention. That's it.
Why do you think people are so joyous if they win? It's not like conquering the world either.
The end of the world argument doesn't apply to sports.
I only accept that fans shouldn't do things like pelting stones or other exaggerated stuff like sending bangles, breaking TV sets or burning effigies. But otherwise criticism and scrutiny are bound to follow for a poor show.
You like a player for his ability and SKILL. If he fails to perform at a stage where he is expected the most, to perform then criticism will follow. The happiness should itself tell these people how passionate and serious public is and how they will react if there's loss.
Even those who know nothing about the sport, pay attention to victory or defeat. That's because it's a matter of national pride.
There's no need to play victim here. Or get this defensive. Either keep mum and let dust settle down or take responsibility.
