I understand what you are trying to tell but end of day it is business and ppl being money minded if this doesnt work thy arent gonna invest on franchise and let me tell you even if they get to do a franchise they will make some one scape goat in this case it will be lead who will be made and replaced by more popular actor if they ever go with franchise idea and give Dibakar a chance
I personally am not conflicted...you gave the example of Haider and Kahaani...both movies catered to the bottom line in some ways by adding in typical elements...if that is all we want at the end of the day, why should filmmakers like DB even EXIST? When we as audiences WANT the predictability in terms of what WE decree as "sanctioned" thrills? So if had a more feminist empowerment angle in the movie, it would automatically be more wow? If we had the lead character doing larger than life action sequences or unhinged antics, that would automatically make this something to applaud?I personally want to be challenged as an audience...I have nothing against masala potboilers...everyone indulges in them on and off...but I feel cinema of the DB variety needs to be APPLAUDED on a MUCH wider scale...the only TRULY original voice in Indian cinema currently IMO...watching his interviews only reaffirms this faith for me...and he is not even a case of empty talk...talk is easy and cheap...this guy LIVES UP TO what he talks and feels passionate about...how many filmmakers like that are even left in Indian cinema nowadays? Who don't cater to the bottom line or expectations of any sort? Who live truly to realize THEIR vision at the end of the day? And DB is not even a snob...he totally UNDERSTANDS his audience and the perception about his cinema...but his inherent HONESTY as a filmmakerstands tall...and that is not something I can berate personally...such films stand the test of time...they are not mindless fluff hailed for 100 crores today, forgotten tomorrow.
