The "context" point wasnt even the main issue .. all it was meant to highlight was , Nandita's statement may have been misquoted ( you dont think she has been misquoted , good for you ) or Nandita's statement has been taken out of context & has been presented here without the appropriate context .. thats what i meant by "context may have been changed" .. it was in support of Nandita's statements .. 😆 ..fine , you didnt get it before , hopefully now you do .. 😆

Okay. My mistake. I didn't understand that point that you were indeed in support of Nandita's comments, hence I misunderstood your meaning of this part.

but feminists will go as far as finding ways to justify such an offensive generalization !

Hence my reply, since I thought it was directed at those who tried to find some context, of which i was one.

My mistake at not catching on to your tone and what you meant. My apologies.

Is this real or made-up. I can never imagine Nandita Das saying this. She's a feminist but in it's true form--not like this.
I'm not gonna jump on her before I know b/c it really doesn't seem like something she would say. I don't expect someone so articulate and well-read to make such sweeping generalizations.

Also, what's the full-context of this line. I totally disagree wth this big time.

I'm being falsely quoted Never said all men are rapists. What kind of a stupid generalisation is that? sad that 1 have to even explain this.

Does anyone know where this quote is from? All I could find was this:

Are offices equipped to handle sexual harassment cases?

When asked her opinion about men these days, actress Nandita Das replied, "Every man is a potential rapist."

After the shocking sexual assault on a young journalist by the editor of the organization she worked for came to light, many seem to agree with the actress' thoughts. Sexual assault at workplace is not as uncommon as many perceive it to be; it's just that unlike a lot of other problems at work, it goes unreported. It takes a lot of courage to put the trauma in words and that's exactly why experts feel that an anti-sexual harassment cell should be an integral part of any organization. Though many organizations have taken this incident as a wake-up call, there are a number of other companies, big and small, which are yet to have a Vishakha Committee to inquire about allegations of sexual harassment. After reading about the Tejpal fiasco and how it was mandatory to have a Vishakha Committee in very organisation, Ashitha Thomas, an employee of a reputed software company in the city, asked her HR colleague if there was one in their office. "To my utter shock, she said that she had never heard of one. I decided to take the matter up with my manager and asked my colleagues to support me," she says.

Like her, there are many who were not aware about the Vishakha Committee. While it is essential to have a complaint wing at the workplace, it is also important that all employees are aware of their rights. "I never knew there was something called the Vishakha Committee. Though my previous employer had a so-called anti-harassment cell, it was just something on paper. No one educated us about it," quips Deepthi M, an advertising professional. Niyathi M Rao, who works as an HR executive in a Chennai-based bank, says that the idea of an anti-sexual harassment cell 'never crossed their minds.' "It is after this incident that we are trying to set up such a department," she states.

While there are HR professionals like Niyathi who didn't think it was necessary to have a Vishakha Committee till now, there are bosses who think it is a requirement only in organizations that have more male employees than female. When Shalmali Shahane, a 28-year oldphysiotherapist, asked her boss whether their organization had a Vishakha Committee, she was told that it wasn't there due to the labour-crunch situation. "According to her, our company does not really need one because the workplace has more female employees than males!"

What is the Vishakha Committee?
The Supreme Court had laid down strict guidelines for dealing with sexual harassment at workplace way back in 1997.This came in the wake of the gangrape of Bhanwari Devi, a social worker from Rajasthan. Following the denial of justice to Devi, Vishakha and other such women rights groups filed a PIL in the Supreme Court. This led to the formation of Vishakha guidelines which enforces the fundamental rights of working women. One of the salient features of the Vishakha guidelines ensures the mandatory formation of a grievance cell that would look into sexual harassment and make it easy for the survivor to address the issue.

But this is not the quote in question. When she conveniently addresses and denies a slightly changed quote as a misquote, it only hurts her own stance. Either don't bother to explain, or if you do explain regarding the exact quote in question.

She still is not answering and responding to the quote that is the topic of discussion, neither is she calling quote in discussion a misquote.

And this article just throws that line in there without it having much bearing on the story. The fact that it's randomly put in there as a lead in to that piece, makes me doubt the little context given to the quote. Really, she just said it in response to the simply question of "opinion on men these days." Nothing more or less to go with her answer, and nothing more or less to go with the question, and nothing more or less within the discussion.

Yeah! Okay...

Which makes me support her even more now.

Nope you werent mistaken , you just didnt decipher the two separate statements ..

Here is a simplified version -

" Nandita may have been misquoted , but people who actually support this heinous generalization - "Every man is a potential rapist " in isolation by applying various absurd permutations & combinations are downright wrong for doing so "

There is absolutely no excuse for justifying such an offensive generalization ..

Moreover , i was only giving Nandita the benefit of the doubt & that is what i meant by 'support' ..

WOW, it's raining FemiNazis everywhere...
Though Nandita knows her shit when it comes to feminism, so wouldn't be surprised at the lack of authenticity of the quote.

But if every man is a potential rapist, then I guess every woman is a potential gold digger or s**t...
