NH10 is said to be made on a budget of 13 crores!
Opening collection was 3crore and the next day collection is expected to be in 4crore range..

so does that mean it can be a hit?

it needs to make 40cr net to be a hit. budget is 13crs, but they spent lots of money on promotion. that's what i heard. going to be tough...its a dark movie and with hardly any family audience..don't know.
well at least it got critical acclaim, and its not a complete washout.

Budget is 13 cr including promotions. It'll probably be considered average at 15-20 cr (doable) and a hit only after 30+ cr...which seems a little unlikely (not a feel good movie so word of mouth won't sustain too long) but not impossible.

Baby, Badlapur, DLKH, NH10, Phantom, Bajirao Mastani - Right budget and profit sharing key for Box Office success
By Joginder Tuteja, Mar 14, 2015 - 02:52 IST
Baby is the biggest grosser of the year with collections close to the Rs. 100 crore mark. Dum Laga Ke Haisha, made at a modest budget of Rs. 9 crores, has turned out to be a neat success with Rs. 20 crores already in from theatrical business. Badlapur, which was made at a cost of Rs. 16 crores despite featuring Varun Dhawan in it, is a clean hit too with Rs. 50 crores from Indian theatrical. Last year, Queen - another low budget, but high content entertainer - surpassed all records to cross Rs. 60 crores in India just from box office sales.

Now for NH10, made at a budget of just Rs. 13 crores (including P&A) is benefitting too since Anushka Sharma has foregone a part of her fee so that the money goes into the making of the film.

In the times when heavy front loading has damaged prospects of many movies due to high cost of roping in superstars, as well as unimaginable marketing and promotion costs, the key to the recent commercial successes has not just been their controlled budget but also the fact that they are back end driven.

"This means that more and more actors are agreeing to work on a film with minimum remuneration, and are instead willing to get into an arrangement where they benefit more from the profits earned," informs a trade insider, "Akshay Kumar was one of the pioneers when he initiated this for his films 5-6 years back. He too believes in a profit sharing mode, instead of a onetime pay package. This is a phenomenon which is picking up well now and the biggest of actors and directors have started showing their consent as well."

After all, low front ending ensures that the money is spent wisely on the making of a film, instead of catering primarily to star fees (and in the process impacting the core production quality). One such film where this thought process has already been implemented is Phantom. Despite producer Sajid Nadiadwala roping in three heavy weight names in the form of Saif Ali Khan, Katrina Kaif and director Kabir Khan, the film has been made at a modest budget of Rs. 40-42 crores. This, when the thriller has quite a few high octane and elaborate action sequences in there. Apparently, none of the aforementioned stars have charged heftily.

Same holds true for Sanjay Leela Bhansali too who has decided to forego his salary and instead opted for a profit sharing mode, hence relieving his magnum opus Bajirao Mastani of its many crores when it came to its making. The film is now reasonably priced at 100 crore. Such kind of profit sharing model helped the director's last Ram Leela as well where he had opted for a profit. That had proved to be a win-win situation for all when the Ranveer Singh - Deepika Padukone starrer entered the 100 crore club.

"This is the need of the hour," says a prominent filmmaker, "What is appreciable is that stars too have started getting a hang of the current situation. With number of films getting shelved practically every week, it is prudent that those in the business understand what really works for all involved and how that can lead to a win-win situation. Instead of waiting for that one big offer which may get them good pay package but not necessarily a quality product, it is only wise to pick a right film at controlled remuneration and then reap benefits from the profits that come in."

A few good men (and women) have already shown the way by leading the pack. Will others follow suit too? Well, for them as well as the industry, we hope so.

As a prominent trade expert opines, "If the intent is right, this model can prove to be a goldmine for all involved."

'NH10' Opens Better Than 'Queen', 'English Vinglish', 'Kahaani', 'Tanu Weds Manu'; Equals 'Mardaani'

By MovieTalkies.com, 14 March 2015 03:00 PM IST

NH10 has spelt good news for Anushka Sharma. With her first female centric film, she had a challenge in store. Not just that as she had a lot more on stake commercially too by turning into a producer along with Eros and Phantom. Well, with over 3.35 crore coming on the first day of the release itself, NH10 has now done almost double of what Queen did on its opening day. This isn't all as Anushka now is enjoying a better opening than Vidya Balan's Kahaani, Sridevi's English Vinglish, Kangana's Tanu Weds Manu while also (almost) equaling Mardaani.

On its release, while Queen had accumulated 1.75 crore, English Vinglish scored 2.5 crore, Kahaani had brought home 3 crore, Tanu Weds Manu enjoyed 3.2 crore, while Mardaani grew from strength to strength after clocking 3.46 crore. Whole early estimates of NH10 are 3.35 crore (it could prove to be better than Mardaani eventually), all eyes are now on how the weekend performs.

An early start like this has given impetus to NH10 as not many believed this Navdeep Singh directed affair would enjoy such good collections on the first day itself.

"There were many reasons for that. The film is violent, it is dark & disturbing, and more than anything else, it has an Adults Only certificate that contributes to reduced footfalls," informs our source, "Due to this, NH10 was always meant to be a word of mouth film. However, more than 3 crore on Day One has given a good head-start to the film. Since the word of mouth is very good too while reviews are all around positive, it is game on for NH10. While it is a given that the weekend would be in excess of 10 crore now, it would be interesting to see how far does it go from this point on."

Each of the aforementioned female centric films, be it Queen, English Vinglish, Kahaani, Tanu Weds Manu or Mardaani, had eventually turned out to be good box office successes. Given the kind of reception that NH10 is enjoying, it is apparent that Bollywood would now have a hat-trick of commercial successes in quick succession with Badlapur and Dum Laga Ke Haisha still playing in theaters.

When contacted, Krishika Lulla said, "It is gratifying to see such kind of response from the audience. I just knew I had a winner in hands when I saw reactions of audience in trials and screenings that happened prior to the release. Then when I visited theaters, I was positive that we would have constant escalation on footfalls."

The film has been made at a tight budget of 8 crore with 5 crore spent on Print & Advertising, hence making it a 13 crore affair.

"Well, you have to keep the budget right," says Kishika, "When you do it that way, it works. You need to enjoy the profits and enjoy the success."

This couldn't have been better stated!
