As the angry, angsty Raghu Varun Dhawan creates havoc on scene. And it is just perfect. #Badlapur

Take a bow @Varun_dvn. You have come a long way from being a 'student' of a candyfloss college. #Badlapur

Badlapur Review By Martin D'Souza, Glamsham Editorial

When you walk away from a screening, puzzled (nay rattled), by the behavior of the protagonist, you know that there must be something in the presentation. When the thought lingers and makes you do a post-mortem of the 'Ifs, Buts and Whys,' the next morning, you are certain that this film has to be a gem.

Welcome to Sriram Raghavan's BADLAPUR, where script is king and performances are the icing on the cake.

Very quickly Raghavan pulls you into the vortex of the drama being enacted on screen. A bold bank robbery goes horribly wrong where Misha (Yami Gautam) and her six-year-old son are killed. The son falls out of a speeding SUV and Misha is shot at when she goes hysterical battling with the goons Liak (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and Harman (Vinay Pathak).

A few seconds before that her husband Raaghav (Varun Dhawan) is shown in his office displaying his funny side. A few minutes later his world changes. So does his demeanor. If just for this quick switch of emotions, captured brilliantly by Raghavan and enacted beautifully by Varun, this is paisa vasool fare.

But there's more paisa vasooli to be made as Nawazuddin Siddiqui gives us a super blast of a performance. You want to stand up and applaud his sheer genius. ''Tu cheez kya hai bhai?''

Even if it's just for Nawazuddin, you have to watch this film. Provided you have the ability to stomach 'gruesome, pathological violence'.

That brings us to the core of the plot. Raaghav has lost all sense of thinking and is plummeted into his grief. He detaches himself from his past and resettles in Badlapur, creating his own private graveyard where he lives in the memory of his wife and son. Every living moment is consumed by a passion for revenge. A revenge that takes an unfathomable turn when he gets to that path, 15 years later!

Just his jhalak in the promos of BADLAPUR had convinced me of his performance. He has raised the bar for newcomers by improving with every outing. Studied, intense, diabolical, with a dash of underplayed comedy; this Dhawan is a full-on dhamaka.

Vinay Pathak too sparkles in a cameo, breaking off from the mold he has cast himself into. But it is Radhika Apte who your heart goes out to for the sincerity in the role and the sparkle in her performance; powerful whilst just being docile. Mind-numbing!

As for Huma Qureshi, she has made the wrong choice of role. An actress of her caliber needs to think differently.

Now for the flaws which are glaring. Even after 15 years have elapsed, Jhimli (Huma Qureshi) looks the same. Ditto, Liak's mother who has not aged a day since her son was given a 20-year prison sentence. What's also perplexing is that Varun's parents are not in touch with him, nor are his in-laws. Also, Liak is said to have cancer and only 10 months to live. But this guy is hale and hearty with no signs of medications or its after-effects.

But all this is made up for in the end when Liak takes his revenge after being denied his share of the booty. So whose revenge is sweeter; Raaghav's or Liak's?

An interesting aside to this movie is one where an NGO worker Shobha (Divya Dutta) is shown working for the plight of convicted criminals. Raghav gives her food for thought when he asks her, ''What about those who have been affected by the crime?''

If you have the tensile strength to absorb gore, go for it.

1st Day Opening Early Box Office Collection Trends Of BADLAPUR

After disastrous beginning of 2015 with flops ''Tevar'' and ''Khamoshiyan'', below par to average ''Baby'', below average ''Dolly Ki Doli'' and ''Roy'', disastrous ''Hawaizaada'' and flop ''Shamitabh'', there is big hope from new release ''Badlapur'' especially due to presence of Varun Dhawan.

''Badlapur'' opened to low occupancies of 15% in areas like Gujarat, UP and Bihar but film is better in Rajasthan, Mumbai and Delhi with 35% occupancies. Overall opening is around 25% and 28% which is good for mid budget film.

Film should grow due to good reviews but how big is the growth will be important. Film will be lower than opening day of ''Roy'' for sure but still it can close down to opening day of ''Baby'' if evening shows witness jump. As per early trends, film should collect 6 - 6.50 cr nett opening day which will be a fair result.

Other new releases like ''Monsoon'' and ''Qissa'' were washout due to limited screens and no big marketing push.

Top Opening Occupancies
2015 :: Badlapur 3rd

2015-02-20 14:04:41 0 News

Badlapur takes decent opening of
around 26-27% which is around 10% lower than Tevar but 6-7% better than Baby.. Baby had seen growth over the Day and registered 9cr Day One which will out of reach for Badlapur unless movie see miraculous turn around in eve..

Movie might leave Tevar behind but for that movie must sustain and see some growth over the Day as Tevar had collected 6.5cr approx on Day One..

Being realistic 5cr seems a good bet
from here for the film.. Movie has taken good start at plexes but still it's 20% lower than ROY..
Below are the opening occupancies of major releases in 2015..

ROY.. 39%
Tevar.. 30%
Badlapur.. 26-27%
Baby.. 25%
Alone.. 17%
Shamitabh.. 15%

Badlapur 1st Day-Friday Box Office Collection Early Trends

February 20, 2015 0

Varun Dhawan's Badlapur, produced by Eros International and directed by Sriram Raghvan has started on a good note at the box office and it is looking at a healthy 1st Day friday of around 6-7 cr according to early trends.

The film's opening is best in multiplexes for the year after Roy as the morning shows opened to around 30-35% occupancies. But the opening in single screens is on the lower side which was expected as these kind of films don't attract masses in a big number.

Badlapur's opening will bring cheer to the production house Eros as it has faced big flops in recent weeks. The start of the film is even more commendable as it has an A certification and a genre which generally dependent on word of mouth.

If the film continues its current trend and shows growth in evening it should be the 4th highest opener for the year 2015.
