Karan is always so well spoken whether it be in print media or a face to face interview. But the more I see or read about him, the more obvious his loneliness and sadness becomes. He is like a living paradox. He comes across as a pretentious, snooty, bitchy, gossip monger who looks down at people and things below his standard with sheer disdain. He's at every party or event rubbing shoulders with the other high brows from different fields. He's obviously minting truck loads of money hosting, judging, making movies, etc. But despite all this, he's always claimed to someone who is keeping up appearances. He does things to get other people's approval/validation, he's in his 40s but still without a partner so he chooses to party with the who's who of every industry to fill that emptiness/void, he quite openly admits and apologizes to people for looking down on them (Anu Ranveer KWK episode) and here he's even mentioned approaching Kashyap despite their differences. He's definitely not as vile as he comes across at times and he basically seems to do a good job of masking all his insecurities because seriously why would a man with so much power, wealth and friendships say that he was only "very rarely happy"?

You don't talk to God?

There is no God I go to. I stopped everything after dad passed away. I don't go to any temple anymore because six months before that, (when his dad was unwell) you are so weak and vulnerable that you listen to everyone and do everything from feeding cows to chanting mantras to doing pujas, to visiting every temple, and meeting every possible spiritual consultant in the world. I did everything but nothing worked because the one who has to go, will go.

I can relate to that. Some experiences change you in a way that you can never go back to the person you once were.

Nailed it! Thank you.

Yes KJo I've a feeling was mercilessly bullied in school/college. He has that air about him & his ditzy bitchiness makes me always feel that it harbours deep pain. That's not an excuse, just an explanation. I don't like his movies a lot in the sense that he isn't my favourite director or someone whose movies I *have* to watch at the cinema like Bhardawaj, Motwane, & Imtiaz Ali but I've to say that he has really found his feet the past few years. His short story in BT was amazing. So sensitive yet slightly painful. It felt like it came from a personal space & it probably did.

Sorry I don't mean to psychoanalyze a celebrity director but there is something very interesting about KJo, probably just the paradox you mentioned. 😆

KJo comes across as a very intelligent and sensitive person through this interview. It is a really good interview. Very insightful, open and in depth. I do feel sorry for all the flak he receives it at times.
I really resonate with his view on God and religion.

I also get his point about orientation. Straight people don't come out, they just are. I don't get why gay people have to do this whole 'coming out' deal. At the same time I feel sorry for KJo. Sometimes he seems stifled. He doesn't seem to have the confidence to be himself 24/7, so he hides behind his diva personality. Kind of like a male Santana Lopez.

😆 silly me. i knew that khnh wasn't directed by karan. but the point i was trying to make on page 1 is that he's a good director or at least he once was and we just tend to misjudge him a lot. he seems like a very genuine person - at least the impression i get reading his interviews.

May be it was AB Sr or Yash Chopra (his maternal uncle) that gave him the letter...

@bold Is this actually true?

I've read this many times, however I've never seen KJo refer to Yash Chopra as his mama. And he has mentioned many times that his mother is Sindhi, but the Chopras are Punjabi.

Ohh I didn't know he had mentioned his Mom as being Sindhi. According to Wikipedia Hero Johar was the baby sister of the Chopra brothers. But yea Wikipedia is not the most accurate. And you are right, he's never referred to Yash Chopra as his mama or to Aditya as his courin brother.

Also karan didn't hav a problem with it. It was just a joke and a bit of fun.

AIB raost was all about the shock value.

Really? Because from Karan's answer it seems to me that he didn't appreciate what Ranveer did not did he find it fun but just decided to let it go because he didn't want to make a big deal out of it.
