Whether one needs to bring in celebs or not, that's not really the point. Whether we realize it or not, at any international event the way we represent ourselves as a country is noticed. Sure, celebs give a glamour quotient. But are they the only ones that matter. Really??
My main point of contention is that this was a sporting event, yet we seemed to have forgotten our own sports superstars. Most Indians don't even seem to be aware or acknowledge that we have world champions right here in the field of badminton and tennis as well. If the organizers feel that only bollywood stars sell without acknowledging our own worthy sport stars, then they are shaping public perception the same way. In most other places, they use this opportunity for the veteran players to interact with other sportsmen.
It's worse enough that the sportsmen of our country have no sponsors, have to play hard but paid a pittance and not always given the resources they need (except for those in cricket). Despite a major win, they are not applauded or given the recognition they deserve. That the organizers made a mess, is an understatement. Rather than applaud the way the event was conducted, given that it was a golden opportunity, it makes me cringe at the thoughtlessness on their part.
By the way, I appreciate the way all of you responded, minus any inflammatory posts for the most part, regardless of whether you agree or disagree with the post.
