'Khamoshiyan' Movie Review: Silences Have Secrets and Empty Theatres

IBTimes India Rating: 1.5

Trust me when I say you'd be making yourself useful reading Kamaal Rashid Khan's tweets than spending a good two hours at the theatre watching a painstakingly boring supernatural thriller.

Kabir (Ali Fazal), a one-book wonder author looking at rediscovering oneself and finding an interesting story, finds himself attracted to smouldering guest house owner Meera (Sapna Pabbi). What follows is a whirlwind romance peppered with some mystery. As ungodly incidents begin to occur in the house, he takes it on himself to unearth Meera's past.

But the attempts are nothing but pointless, as we all know how the protagonist remains unaware of the truth until there's an in-your-face occurrence. The cheap thrills - squeaky doors and flickering lights - fails to give you the creeps, and dialogues seem to be suffering from a severe 90s hangover.

Director Karan Dara's "Khamoshiyan" could've been engaging had it not been wrapped up in haste. With 2-hour run time, there's enough mystery to keep you on the edge, but the climax is a major let down. Had the director not given in to the temptation of using tried and tested plot devices, it could have turned out to be a novel fare.

Ali delivers as a desperate lover and author making incessant efforts to unravel the secret. While he has grown as an actor, debutant Sapna, as the seductive hotel owner, is more like a damp fire cracker, which fizzles out even before taking off. Gurmeet Choudhary (Jaidev), as the bed-ridden husband to Meera, had an extended cameo but looks like the director gave him the latitude to flaunt his chiseled contours.

The highlight of the film is its music. The lead pair romancing in the icy Kashmir valleys to melodious numbers transports one to a world of dreams. Jeet Ganguli, Ankit Tiwari and Naved Jafar's compositions and Arijit Singh's heartfelt renditions are the real stars.

And yes, adding to the tagline -- 'Silences have secrets' and empty theatres.

Ali Fazal and Sapna Pabbi in KhamoshiyanKhamoshiyan is totally consumed by its cheesy scares-sex-scares-sex pattern, says Sukanya Verma.

Ghosts like to hang around dimwits with an uncontrollable libido.

It's convenient, you see.

Only a certified dolt would check into a spooky, vacant hotel and stay on because a mysterious head turner runs it or accept rides, shelter and a suspicious glass of wine from creepy, crooked strangers.

Khamoshiyan, written by Vikram Bhatt and directed by debutant Karan Darra, is populated with such oversexed fools and, again, conveniently assumes the viewers will shove their brains in a corner as remote as the mansion on screen to revel in the cheap thrills that ensue.

It all begins when a one-book wonder (Ali Fazal) shaken by his bitter (read five minutes of flat out phoniness) breakup, ventures into the deep, desolate woods of Kashmir seeking inspiration for his next novel. It's actually South Africa and that's why such absolute nonexistence of army.

Author fella lands in a secluded redbrick manor filled with all the generic props -- swooshing winds, looming paintings, self igniting fireplace, tumbling books, wide stairs, French windows, locked rooms, eerie wine cellars and a vintage radio's ominous cry -- Aayega Aanewala, a low-brow nod to the bizarre, enigmatic genius of Kamal Amrohi's Mahal.

He's instantly drawn to the manor's lady, manager and housekeeper (Sapna Pabbi) as emphasized in the camera's constant focus on her strategically bared cleavage. All that multitasking, plus nursing a bedridden husband (Gurmeet Chaudhary), would leave anyone sapped but her cold, robotic tone vies for a mystifying stature.

'Hum sab apne raaz ke shikaar hain,' she muses as if explaining why Vikram Bhatt is trapped in a horror rut.

Curious events ascertain that the site is haunted. Only Khamoshiyan is so consumed by its cheesy scares-sex-scares-sex pattern, the upshot is tacky and unintentionally hilarious. At one point, the exasperated ghoul actually has to explain the range of its supernatural mumbo jumbo to Khamoshiyan's daft protagonists.

The demonic presence is one of the most juvenile representations of evil I've witnessed in a while.

As if it's not humiliating enough that no one takes you seriously, the wretched thing has to resort to form shifting tactics that render it more mutant than monster. Also director Darra, please teach your bhoot some keyboard shortcuts, it's embarrassing to see how much time it took to delete text from one measly document.

Scenic locales, half-decent actors and a lilting soundtrack keep the hocus pocus tolerable till interval point.

Thereafter Khamoshiyan slips into a hopeless mess of time worn ghost busting, freakish sights and comical gems like 'Hum yeh laash paidal nahi le jaa sakte.'

What happens when you are forced to scale the heights of gross absurdity? Well you are left with a black hole of damning 'silence' that leaves a gnawing pain in your mind. Karan Darra's KHAMOSHIYAN is a hauntingly boring movie. The makers took the title so seriously that there are hardly any actors in the film. All you get is yawn-inducing spells of baseless silences. Comparing this movie with yesteryear classic MAHAL will be an insult of the highest order. Only saving grace of KHAMOSHIYAN is a wonderful music score.

Kabir (Ali Fazal) is an alcoholic writer who is literally kicked where-it-hurts-the-most by an ex-girlfriend's husband into taking a new course for his life and to write another book. In search of a new story, Kabir travels to a scenic place near Srinagar (actually shot in South Africa) and lodges in a desolate hotel run by Meera (Sapna Pabbi). Kabir falls for the mysterious charm and captivating sensuality of Meera even though strange things happen in the hotel, like falling keys, a deviant photograph doing a vanishing act, or a coquettish fireplace alighting or cooling down surreptitiously. The sexual tension between Meera and Kabir is consummated with a detailed lip-lock session. The mystery of Meera's husband Jaidev (Gurmeet Chaudhary) is unraveled with an eye-popping (literally) 'twist'. The much hyped 'threesome' between the three is a 'spirit'ed tug-of-war that leaves you baffled at the detailed stupidity.

It's not surprising that Vikram Bhatt has been credited as the 'writer' of this silly-horror-fest. He's the man behind some of the most bizarre films in the horror genre in Bollywood. KHAMOSHIYAN surely competes with the regressive-imagination-defying 'gems' Vikram has been associated with in the past. The same man has written some brilliant columns on life in newspapers but has nothing novel to say in his movies. Debutante Director Karan Darra's Twitter bio proclaims him to be, "An Artist. A Poet." There's no artistry or poetry in the idea or execution of KHAMOSHIYAN. It is just a rehash of many such weird movies that the Bhatts are proficient at making primarily aimed at Box Office with ample dosage of sex and melodious music. Sex is good and so is music but a gripping story and execution are missing in KHAMOSHIYAN and that's the problem.

Technically, there's nothing exciting to notice. VFX is strictly average. You can make out the synthetic butterflies flying around. In today's day and age, there's much better scope for perfection. Nigam Bomzan's camerawork is impressive in song picturisations. Kuldip Mehan's editing is taut. The duration of two hours is a correct decision in a narrative where nothing much happens. Music is the biggest USP of KHAMOSHIYAN. The title track, composed by Jeet Ganguly is a simple yet beautiful melody that floors you. Rashmi Singh's lyrics are very effective in capturing the idea of 'Silences'. 'Tu Har Lamha' (Bobby Imran), 'Kya Khoya' (Naved Jafar), 'Baatein Ye Kabhi Na' (Jeet Ganguly) and 'Bheeg Loon' (Ankit Tiwary) are excellent songs that stay with you once the movie is over.

Ali Fazal is a gifted actor. He has a wide range of emotions that effortlessly inhabit his face. At several junctures during the film he surprises you but then the incredulous plot spoils everything. Sapna Pabbi has an earthy sexual appeal. She knows how to use her eyes and body language to her advantage. Gurmeet Chaudhury has a brief role and doesn't really get a chance to display his talent. He will make you cringe, but no credit to him for that, it's all rather unappealing.

On the whole, KHAMOSHIYAN fails to impress or entertain (an extra half star for music though). In these changing times, audience wants something fresh even in the Horror/ Supernatural genre. Bhatts need to realize that at the earliest. For now, you should stay away from this Echoing-Silence!

Congratulations Gurmeet, Ali and Sapna for the release of Khamoshiyan, particularly Gurmeet! I've read reviews of all sorts, positive and negative, but this is a big success for Gurmeet because it's his first actual movie of Bollywood. All stars have both hits and flops. Every popular star of BW has had a handful of flops in their career, and Khamoshiyan is by far nowhere near a flop. It's not the best movie either, but it's not a flop. As a first movie, it has done pretty well for Gurmeet and I hope the next will be even better. All your hard work has paid off, congratulations! The movie has finally released and the wait is over. I can't wait to watch it and judge it myself.

Khamoshiyan movie review: An intriguing story coated with passionate romance

Khamoshiyan movie review: An intriguing story coated with passionate romance

A mysterious yet enticing wife, a demon husband, a young novelist and dark silences are packed and transported to a rambling house in the snowy Kashmir. They all converge in Khamoshiyan and bring out terrifying elements to spook you out. What makes this Karan Darra's directorial different from recent obnoxious horror-tales is that besides having not so unfamiliar plot, the movie delivers some genuine thrills which is so vital for a horror-mystery.

After a series of avoidable fares, the horror cinema is back with a vengeance. It may not be the most eerie experience, but it has its share of terrifying moments that one expects from a film that deals with psychological ways leading to paranormal events.

Stars- Ali Fazal, Sapna Pabbi, Gurmeet Choudhary
Director- Karan Darra
Music- Ankit Tiwari

A young novelist Kabir (Ali Fazal) breaks-up with his girlfriend for her non-serious attitude towards his career. His tall promises for his love too stand false and so the lady considers it better to leave him and falls for another guy. Heartbroken Kabir moves on in his life and starts searching for an inspirational story for his book.

Khamoshiyan movie review

He meets a young and beautiful lady Meera (Sapna Pabbi), who runs an isolated guest-house in Kashmir with no guests in it. Meera is married to the owner of this guest-house Jaidev (Gurmeet) who was once a rich paper mill owner but now is down with an unknown illness and is on bed.

Kabir soon begins to encounter unusual things and discovers secrets about the house and its owner Meera. But she is evasive about these suspicious incidents that are taking place and knows about its consequences if they get revealed. The more Kabir interacts with Meera about these strange incidents the more he gets drawn towards her. What are the secrets that are hidden behind her silence? Khamoshiyan gives you gripping answers to those questions.

Undoubtedly, the movie will help Bhatt's to regain the place in the horror-genre. In fact, it's after a really long gap that they seem to be in complete command. The writing by Vikram Bhatt, is well structured while director Karan builds and sustains the required mystery around it.
The first half is more about the intriguing chemistry between Ali Fazal and Sapna Pabbi, which builds and then takes the required mystery around it to the second half. Filled with few racy songs, the flick has a sensual appeal, which was expected from the Bhatt camps. Alike Mohit Suri to whom director Karan considers as his mentor, he brings in the romantic tale quite efficiently. However, the second half is not up to the mark completely. The plot loses at times post interval and there seems hurry by the director to wrap up the drama inspite of giving a proper ending. Yet, we are convinced with the love story and few scary moments.

Khamoshiyan movie review

Moreover, we are surprised by the performance of the not-so-celebrated star cast. However, we are all aware about their caliber particularly Ali Fazal and Gurmeet Choudhary.

Gurmeet doesn't let the opportunity go waste and grabs it with both of his hands. He carries that devilish smile on his face, which is also charming while his grey shades keep us hooked.

Ali Fazal brings out the intensity and eagerness in his act quite masterfully. Sapna Pabbi as a mysterious woman lures us.

Music by Ankit Tiwari is once again phenomenal. The movie has ample songs but they don't disturb the flow of this thriller in any way.

I'll go with three stars for Khamoshiyan which on the whole is an engrossing fare.

When all the horror films in Bollywood are instead coming out to be comedies, Khamoshiyan starring Gurmeet Choudhary, Sapna Pabbi & Ali Fazal has released today with good expectations. This film which marks the directional debut of Karan Darra is expected to be a intriguing horror and erotic drama. Lets see what it has in stores for us...

Khamoshiyan is a story of novelist Kabir (Ali Fazal) who wants to give an aim to his life by completing atleast one story. Following his thirst to write a complete story, Kabir reaches an isolated guest house where he meets Meera (Sapna Pabbi) and develops feelings for her. Soon the feeling becomes mutual and Meera tells Kabir that she lives in the guest house with her paralyzed husband. Meanwhile, Kabir also face some supernatural experiences in the guest house.

What happens next? Is Meera saying truth or there is some dark truth hidden? If yes then what is it? Watch the film to get your answers...

How is the screenplay of film? Does it manage to scare the audience or comes out to be just another unintentional comedy film?

If you are pissed of the regular horror films in Bollywood which hardly scare you than Khamoshiyan is a surprise. The film with its excellent narrative doesn't just scare you but also grips you to your seats tightly craving for the proceedings.

First half of the film is just amazing and carries lot of things to make you excited for the actual plot. Romance is good and film has lot of chills and thrills for audience in this time period. In second half the film faces a dip for sometime but soon picks up tremendously and moves towards the finale amazingly.

Apart from all the positives there are some limitations too but they are very few.

How is the Direction and Performances of film?

Karan Darra with Khamoshiyan has done what no one other managed to do as a Director in horror genre in recent times. Leave aside some mistakes he has managed to make a film that really scares the audience. There was pin drop silence among audience while watching this horror flick which is very rare case these days.

Ali Fazal has performed well as Kabir. He does a fine job. Gurmeet Choudhary marks an extremely well debut as an actor on big screen. His personality and performance are A Grade. Sapna Pabbi is average. Vikram Bhatt is also there in small role.

How is the Music and other Technical Aspects of film?

Music of the film is very good but doesn't gels with the screenplay. Lyrics are superb. Background score is good. Cinematography is good too. Editing could've been better at some places.

What is your Final Verdict and Rating?

Watch Khamoshiyan if it has been long since you watched a good horror film.

    Rating : 3.5 / 5
