Khamoshiyan quick movie review: Gurmeet Singh- Sapna Pabbi- Ali Fazal starrer is quite eerie! 0
The latest Bhatt horror flick has hit theatres today
Mahesh Bhatt and Vikram Bhatt are out with their latest horror venture starring Television heartthrob Gurmeet Singh Choudhary, Sapna Pabbi and Ali Fazal. The film marks the debut of Gurmeet and Sapna and has already created a lot of buzz. Our reviewer, Letty Abraham is at the movies currently and here's what she has to say about the film so far...

"Ali Fazal and Sapna Pabbi have a great chemistry going. The pace of the movie is set perfectly to increase one's curiosity but there are some gaping loopholes in the plot. The first half looks intriguing and keeps the mystery alive. Gurmeet's fans might be a little disappointed because the dude is missing from the first half of the film. Let's just hope his presence in the second half is impactful enough to compensate his absence this far and also that the film manages to maintain its thrill till the very end."

A mysterious yet enticing wife, a demon husband, a young novelist and dark silences are packed and transported to a rambling house in the snowy Kashmir. They all converge in Khamoshiyan and bring out terrifying elements to spook you out. What makes this Karan Darra's directorial different from recent obnoxious horror-tales is that besides having not so unfamiliar plot, the movie's culmination is compelling, which is so vital for a horror-mystery.

After a series of avoidable fares, the horror cinema is back with a vengeance. It may not be the most eerie experience, but it has its share of terrifying moments that one expects from a film that deals with psychological ways leading to paranormal events.

Stars- Ali Fazal, Sapna Pabbi, Gurmeet Choudhary
Director- Karan Darra
Music- Ankit Tiwari

A young novelist Kabir (Ali Fazal) is a one-book wonder and is on an inspirational journey to find himself and write his book. He meets a young and beautiful lady Meera (Sapna Pabbi) who runs the isolated guest-house in Kashmir, which he finds weird. Meera is married to the owner of this guest-house Jaidev (Gurmeet) who was once a rich paper mill owner. Jaidev under the disguise of his charming persona is a controlling demon.

Khamoshiyan movie review

Kabir soon begins to encounter unusual things and discovers secrets about the house and its owner Meera. Meera is evasive about these suspicious incidents that are taking place. The more Kabir interacts with Meera about these strange incidents the more he gets drawn towards her. What are the secrets that are hidden behind her silence? Khamoshiyan gives you gripping answers to those questions.

Without doubt, the movie will help Bhatt's to regain the place in the horror-genre. In fact, it's after a really long gap that they seem to be in a complete command. The writing by Vikram Bhatt, is well structured while director Karan builds and sustains the required mystery around it until he thrills us all with its convincing climax.

What's more intriguing is the chemistry between Ali-Sapna and Gurmeet-Sapna. You are never able to judge what is going in their mind when they play with their intimacy. But that's what is required in the game of lust and love here.

Khamoshiyan movie review

Moreover, we are surprised by the performance of the not-so-celebrated star cast. However, we are all aware about their caliber particularly Ali Fazal and Gurmeet Choudhary.

Gurmeet doesn't let the opportunity go waste and grabs it with both of his hands. He carries that devilish smile on his face, which is also charming while his grey shades keep us hooked.

Ali Fazal brings out the intensity and eagerness in his act quite masterfully. Sapna Pabbi as a mysterious woman lures us.

Music by Ankit Tiwari is once again phenomenal. The movie has ample songs but they don't disturb the flow of this thriller in any way.

On the whole, Khamoshiyan is an engrossing fare that meets the expectations.

Khamoshiyan Movie Review : A Mystery In Silence Of Spooky
Critics Review

Khamoshiyan review

The last Friday of January 2015 seems to be a busy one considering the fact that is has a number of releases. One of them includes an erotic love triangle called Khamoshiyan directed Karan Darra, while produced by the Bhatt brothers (Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt) in association with the popular production company Vishvesh Films. The movie revolves around the life of a writer who enters the icy slopes of Kashmir hills and valleys in a search of a story wherein he discovers a woman having a weird and silent past giving the film this same. The lead roles in the film include Ali Fazal, Gurmeet Choudhary and Sapna Pabbi, while the music comes from Ankit Tiwari and Jeet Ganguly. Let's dig deep into the film to explore what's goes inside it.

Let's start with the plot of the film- Khamoshiyan. As said earlier, you have a writer (novelist) called Kabir, which is being played by the actor Ali Fazal, who happens to be a one book wonder. He is deeply hurt for losing his love for another man as he seemed reckless and callous towards his career and objectives of life. His promises for his love often proved hollow, which compels the lady to move one to find one. In order to get rid of this turmoil and its aftermath repercussions, he goes for an inspirational journey to find something to write for his book. Therein he encounters a gorgeous and young lady called Meera played by Sapna Pabbi who owns and manages a guesthouse with hardly guest in it, while Kabir finds this place very much errie. Meera is a married lady to the owner of this guesthouse called Jaidev played by Gurmeet Choudhary, who happens to be a wealthy businessman and owner of a paper rich, however, he lost all this to remain just the owner of this place.

Inside this person is a demon, who is also unwell and bed ridden, he compels Meera to run this business of guesthouse. Kabir while living inside the hotel ambushes certain unusual stuff and finds out some secret regarding Meera and her house. Meera seems to be very much evasive regarding these suspicious incidents, which seems to be taking place around and later realizes that these things would soon ruin her. Soon Kabir is seen interacting with Meera and seen getting drawn to her. He starts getting confused whether such incidents, which are taking places, are real or mere hypothesis, which he alone is feeling out of his imaginations. In order to find out the reality and get rid of this confusion, Kabir is tries to raise the curtain behind these mysteries, right from the woman and other stuff, which are worthy to catch.

Let's talk of performances starting with Ali Fazal in the role of a writer - Kabir. He has come a long way, right from playing the role of Joy Lobo in Rajkumar Hirani's film 3 Idiots with a cameo to Fukrey, Bobby Jasoos, Sonali Cable, etc. With every single role he did, he seemed in the transit phase of evolving in his acting performances. Perhaps, with Khamoshiyan, he seemed to be maturing up, his role in this erotic thriller drama seems par and up to the mark, yet it has rooms for improvement. Still, one can give good score for his acting performance, while others like the TV heartthrob Gurmeet Choudhary in his negative role too was okay and considering his debut movie, he seemed to be better, who will improve with the passing time. Sapna Pabbi, unlike Gurmeet is new in films as its her debut movie, however, she tried her best to portray the character of Meera very well with her sensual sequences over the bed with both Ali and Gurmeet.

As far as the script is concerned, the movie is a bit slow in the early stage, giving the audience too many loo breaks, however, as time passes by, you get chance to stick with the movie. However, the story and screenplay isn't too new and novel, which you realise while catching up the film since such scripts was dealt early with different modes by the Bhatts under scary and furious stories. Yet the direction and other aspects of the film sound okay. The locations were incredible based on Cape Town in South Africa and in Kashmir in the second stage. Editing, screenplay, music and other aspects are okay though not par. The music and tracks have got positive response by the audience, while some of the songs are very much sensual soaring the temperature of the movie.

Khamoshiyan Review Last word
Unlike the other movies of Bhatts, this film too has its own share of a racy script, having a couple of skin shows in it. As claimed by the producers, the movie would remind us old Madhubala starrer film called Mahal, but it seems to fail on it. Though was able to pass on the fear psychosis to certain extent, but cannot be still compared to Mahal. The movie seems the same usual storyline with skin shows and nothing really impressive, which can attract good amount of audience to the theatres.

Khamoshiyan Movie Poster

Rating: 2/5 Stars (Two stars)

Star Cast: Gurmeet Choudhary, Sapna Pubbi, Ali Fazal

Director: Karan Darra

What's Good: A good suspense build-up in the first half which is gripping enough with its spooky elements. Overall Khamoshiyan maintains a decent pace and the songs don't come as overkill. Conceptually too, there is something new which is rare in Bollywood horror. In spite of having a amateur cast, all the three leads deliver a decent performance.

What's Bad: After building an engaging tale, the climax seems to hurried and while the director keeps it short with just 2 hours, he misses the second half grip. It seems like an incomplete story line and as if he wanted to make sure there is a happy ending, he wraps it up too quick. I was expecting many more thrills in the second-half but unfortunately they were not enough to keep me hooked to the film.

Loo break: Yeah! You could use one!

Watch or Not?: Khamoshiyan is not an out and out horror film, in fact it is a decent mixture of horror and romance This is a typical Bhatt film with its horrex elements. If you wish to get scared, then this film is not that top notch but just as a breather from all the regular Bollywood dramas, this could make up for a decent watch. The sets look good with their creepy interiors and eerie silences work good for this film. Not a must-watch material but passable for regular cine-goers.

Kabir (Ali Fazal) is a one book wonder who has high commitment issues right from relationships to writing. Fed up with the uncertainty in his life, Kabir sets out on a journey to find his next story. What better than finding inspiration in the icy valleys of Kashmir and this where Kabir meets Meera (Sapna Pabbi) who owns a guest house.

Well, Meera is a sexy las who claims to be staying with her bed-ridden husband who is the owner of the guest house. While her strange behavior attracts Kabir, he not only falls in love with her, but also decides to solve the mystery that holds her back from him. As Kabir starts experiencing strange things in the house which make it certain that there is a supernatural power residing in the house.

As Kabir unearths Meera's past, what is he about to find out?

Khamoshiyan Review: Script Analysis
Horror movies give me the creeps but still they are highly enjoyable to watch. While Khamoshiyan started off well with a wooden house with creaking doors, a sensuous guest house owner who talks seductive to her customers (well, in this case only one!) and a writer who is in search of himself and a story. That's it, Karan Darra has it all to make a hit, spicy horror erotica but then haste is what spoils this broth completely.

When I sat through the first half making up stories of what could be that suspense element that the writers were holding till the interval, I found out all possible solutions and even Vampire stories struck my brains but what turned out to be the mystery was quite disappointing. At one point when Meera speaks in a man's voice and the constant portrayal of her husband being locked in a room, gave me the feeling that she was going to be a female Norman Bates but unfortunately, the film's story did not come even a little close to that.

There were quite a lot of loopholes in the story which suddnenly came to the fore in the second half, resulting in a bad climax. Even though the script is good enough with dialogues that keep leaving hints of the hidden story, it does not quite wow you or compel you to watch every scene.

Khamoshiyan Review: Star Performances
Ali Fazal as Kabir does a decent job at playing a writer who has lost his way and his desperate search for a new story. The actor seems to be becoming better with each film as compared to his last ride with Vidya Balan in Bobby Jasoos, this one is certainly a notch higher. The actor has a good diction and amongst the three lead characters in the film, Ali definitely stands out.

Sapna Pabbi debuts with this film and her seductively sexy avatar is surely going to win her praises. She definitely needs a little helping hand with her acting skills as she does not come of as a polished actress, nonetheless she has outdone herself from her TV series 24. Sapna surely has a long way to go ahead and it won't be long before she becomes the face of the Bhatt camp films.

TV star Gurmeet Chaudhary too makes his Bollywood debut with this film but other than having a tinier role, the actor has less time to show his skills. He looks smoking hot and the director does not miss the opportunity of having him flaunt his hot bod bare shirt. Gurmeet has potential and needs a more meatier role to prove his mettle on the silver screen.

Khamoshiyan Review: Direction, Editing and Screenplay
Karan Darra debuts with this film and as his first stint, the director gives us a decent film except the fact that it reeks of the Bhatt film touch. All the horror erotica films that have come from the Bhatt banner have a typical feel to them and so does Khamoshiyan. With the film's special effects too, Darra does not present something novel. He just relies on his story and background score to spook you enough. I had a major problem with the hurry Karan seemed to be in to wrap up this film as the climax was too quick. Other than losing his main plot in the second-half, Khamoshiyan becomes too jumbled and confusing in the second half. Also sadly, I found both the love stories too weak to impress us but of course Karan will have to be given credits for making the intimate scenes look sensuous and not bordering on the line of vulgar.

Khamoshiyan Review: The Last Word
Khamoshiyan has nothing extraordinary to it. It is a horror erotica and if you are a fan of this genre, I am sure this is one of the better films amongst those that have hit the screens recently. Suspense, mystery and also the haunting experience being average, I am going with a 2/5 for this film.
