Stamp of a hit is important: Anil Kapoor
After a career spanning more than 35 years, essaying an eclectic mix of characters in innumerable films, and producing a couple as well, Anil Kapoor says that, now, making money might not be the only thing in his purview, but scoring a hit on the box office still remains a priority for him, even as a producer. In a recent interview, the 57-year-old opens up about his son Harshvardhan's impending debut in Bolly wood, the business done by his recently released production venture, and the criteria he usually employs while zeroing in on a film to produce. - See more at: http://www.hindustantimes.com/entertainment/bollywood/stamp-of-a-hit-is-important-anil-kapoor/article1-1270985.aspx#sthash.qQe1BpZB.dpuf
Harshvardhan is all set to make his Bollywood debut.
Yes, he's going to start shooting from November. He's prepping himself. I'm very proud of my kids because they were launched by successful directors.

So, any piece of advice for him?
Kids " who are in the 22-23 age bracket " have their own mind, and they are very sure of what they want.

You must be happy with the success of Sonam and Rhea's latest film.
My happiness began when I saw the first cut of the film. When I saw the movie,I knew that we had cracked it. I was very happy with the way the characters had shaped up, and the way they were shown. - See more at: http://www.hindustantimes.com/entertainment/bollywood/stamp-of-a-hit-is-important-anil-kapoor/article1-1270985.aspx#sthash.qQe1BpZB.dpuf
Do you think Daawat-e-Ishq, which released on the same day, had an impact on your film?
I feel that if Daawat-e-Ishq had not released in the same week, our film would have been successful on the first day itself. Theirs was a much bigger film, Aditya Roy Kapur was coming after Aashiqui 2 (2013), Habib Faisal after Ishaqzaade (2012), and Aditya Chopra is a successful producer, who has a series of hits to his name. But every film has a journey, and we had ours.

How would you define yourself as a producer?
I'm a very different kind of producer; I spend a lot of my time on the concept of the film. So, when the concept of Khoobsurat was brought to me, I thought it was rubbish for today's day and age. But one day, Rhea told me she wanted to adapt the film, and I just connected with it. The rights of the film were with Tutu Sharma. We spoke to him, and he was gracious enough to give them to us. Then the team came to me with the budget of Rs. 15 crore, I slashed it by Rs. 3 crore. For me, it was important that the film becomes successful in the very first week. I told Rhea that it was not about the money. I have enough money to take care of the family, but the stamp of a hit is important.

Many box office pundits have'nt updated their figures, as the movie is still in theatres. @boxofficedetail has been very ambiguous, a week before it reported Khoobsurat is a little over 10 cr PKR. It should be doing more than that. Hoping these figures r not final and movie does business futher.

10 cr [PKR] = 5.97 cr [NR]

Return of a Romantic hero~Khoobsurat beginning for FAK~Updtaes&AT (Page 73)

Just from assessing how cinemas are divided among movies - and distribution etc. - it seems that next movie with FK will have difficulty being positioned as mainstream.

- FK is still restricted to mainly a ladies audience (and not the action-seeking male audience in very rough terms)
- for indian males a pakistani male as lead will not be a slam dunk - could possibly work in an action role (similar to his work in Jutt & Bond as a Bond-esque figure) - but there will be resistance from some of the more jingoistic circles (however that may even help a movie - if it makes a film "notorious" - just like criticism of "Haider" for it's location got some criticism - but did not seem to have hurt it in the theaters)
- FK will have to prove himself in his next role - which could be safe (playing on his niche) - or could explore something new. Ideally he would work the same angle with some additional nuances perhaps (since then it will be easier to convince distributors etc.) - compared to if he does a totally different role (which will again require "let us see how he does that role" first before he gets validation) - for his next role FK would need to start to consolidate his role into something more mainstream (unless he wants to relegate himself to "character" roles)

So maybe a bit of creative intelligence on part of FK - and his counterparts in Bollywood - may yield dividends. That is - pick a role which works for him - and which he can work well. On the other hand FK could do a smaller project as well on the side as well - if he wants to "explore" the medium further.

Maybe he will want to move quicker into production etc. type of roles - though there he will be taking on more risk as well. But with the right players/collaborations it may work ..

EDIT: By the way, I was mentioning this to someone some months back about the potential for increasing role of Pakistani collections in the profitability consideration of (some) Bollywood movies - the smaller or "art" movies (which generally have difficulty competing with the bigger offerings). This is because some movies may play better into the Pakistani sense - or (as we saw with some of Ali Zafar's movies) may actually have a Pakistani actor (reminiscent of how many Hollywood movies are starting to include Indian actors - just so they get an extra push in the indian box office). While the pakistani box office effect is small - maybe 1/10 from the numbers that have been posted here - but this effect will grow to maybe double or more as the multiplex phenomenon increases more (and smaller cities also get such places). However "Khoobsurat" is the first example where the Pakistani box office collections became significant well before that multiplex boom.

ADDING: In Pakistan the domestic movie industry is so anemic - and the new movies that are being made here are few and far between (multiplexes have attracted a demographic which had earlier stopped going to cinema because of the seedy state of disrepair they had fallen into). That the bulk of movie content is either Hollywood (and now Bollywood). The introduction of Bollywood movies was seen as a major break for the local cinema industry (since many people would be watching these Bollywood movies anyway - on DVD etc. or cable). So for Bollywood movies there is scant competition from local fare. This may change as local movies are being made in higher number (and often-times by people who are not completely associated with "Lollywood" - as a result there is a resurgence of Urdu fare compared to the Punjabi Jutt-in-London type of movies that Lollywood had slid into). So having Bollywood content has made cinema theaters viable - and the creation of cinemas has created a place where the (occasional pakistani movie can be shown). So contrary to the exclamation from some quarters (like Samina Pirzada etc. earlier - don't know what she thinks now) - that Bollywood fare will stifle the new cinema in pakistan well before the new cinema has an opportunity to take hold - contrary to that I would suggest that it is the appearance of Bollywood movies which has "jump-started" the economic engine of movies in Pakistan. Otherwise it would have remained in the "chicken-and-egg" stage i.e. need content that people want to drive cinema theater growth - and need local cinema theaters (that people who have the money are willing to go to) before local movies can be screened there.

BOX OFFICE REPORT CARD OF 2014, TOP 21 FILMS AT BOX OFFICE WITH FINAL VERDICT
Tuesday 30 September 11:59
In first 9 months, we had only one blockbuster and handful of hits. Though surprise hits like ''Queen'' and ''Ragini MMS 2'' did score at box office but then these films do not change the bigger picture. Most of the promising filmsremained either average or semi hits. Now ''Happy New Year'', ''P.K.'' and ''Bang Bang'' might change that to certain extent.

Box Office Report Card Of 2014, No Growth Over Last Year But Last Quarter Crucial

Tomorrow last quarter of 2014 will kick off and there are line up of some real potential blockbusters. 2014 was not a great year at box office and there is almost no growth in overall business in first 9 months despite bigger promotions and higher ticket price.

There was back to back distinct growth in 2012 and 2013 over previous years but 2014 looks to finish in the same range as 2013. This year should have seen better performance as 2 Salman Khan starrers, one each from Shahrukh and Aamir, one biggie from Hrithik, one form Rohit - Ajay combo and couple of Akshay Kumar starrers hit the screens. But even 850 - 900 cr nett in last quarter can take it to close to 2013 total. Following is the year wise comparison of business of Hindi film box office -
