#ThandaYaGaram update: 82% of you have rated @DaawatEIshq starring @ParineetiChopra & #AdityaRoyKapur as #Garam! pic.twitter.com/jaxxmY1OSv
Parineeti Chopra and Aditya Roy Kapur are here to treat the audiences with the foodie film of the year Habib Faisal's Dawaat-E-Ishq. Here is our review of Dawaat-E-Ishq-
Plot-
Dawaat-E-Ishq is a sweet love story how a girl from Hyderabad coincidentally falls in love with the charm of a cook from Lucknow. Gulrez (Parineeti Chopra) lives with her father (Anupam Kher) who is a government clerk. In the city of Hyderabad the culture of Dowry is still alive and that's the reason why Gulrez is still unmarried. Gulrez has a dream of going to USA and to live her dream, Gulrez along with her father decide to trap the guys who demand dowry. The family which comes in the trap is the family of a cook from Lucknow, Tarik Haider (Aditya Roy Kapur). Will Gulrez be able to trap Tarik Haider and his family and demand lots of money from them or will she fall in love with the human side of the cook? Along with lots of humor forms the basic plot of Dawaat-E-Ishq.
Direction-
Post Do Dooni Chaar and Ishaqzaade, expectations are high from a Habib Faisal film. The director in the past has smartly touched the sensitive issues which people in our country suffer from in his last two directorial ventures and he continues the trend with Dawaat-E-Ishq. The talented director has managed to beautifully handle the sensitive issue of Dowry along with the innocent love story between the lead pair. However, the film becomes a bit unrealistic towards the end and suffers from the problem of being too simple.
Music-
Music of Daawat-E-Ishq by Sajid Wajid blends wonderfully with the theme of the film. The music is situational and is soothing to the ears. The songs don't act as a hurdle and take the story forward.
Technical Aspects-
Daawat-E-Ishq is a fast paced entertaining film with a runtime just over 2 hours which is being edited smartly by Meghna Sen. There is no doubt about the production values as the film is being backed by one of the biggest production house of India Yash Raj Films. The beauty of Lucknow and Hyderabad is being captured beautifully by cinematographer Himman Dhamija. The cinematographer has also done a great job in capturing the food from the streets of Lucknow and makes us crave for the food. The dialogues are entertaining yet interlaced with subtle message.
Performances-
Parineeti Chopra has always managed to lighten up the screen with her presence and she continues the same in Daawat-E-Ishq. The actress as a Hyderabadi girl looks convincing and despite her character sketch being similar to that of the films she has done in the past; she manages to leave a mark. Watch out for the scene where she convinces Anupam Kher to be a part of the game to trap people demanding Dowry. Aditya Roy Kapur is growing with every passing film. The actor has a complete image turnover from the film he has done in the past and he manages to put up an impressive show. Watch out for the scene in the climax where he speaks about Dowry. Anupam Kher is in sublime form as the actor manages to put up a great show. The actor is in full from the word go and kudos to the actor to bring about so much energy in his performance. Karan Wahi leaves a mark with his short cameo.
Verdict-
Overall, Daawat-E-Ishq is a sweet love story with a great message which the current generation should implement. The movie rides on the powerful performances by Parineeti Chopra, Aditya Roy Kapur and Anupam Kher and good story telling by the director Habib Faisal. The movie at times gets a bit unrealistic but its heart is at the right place.
Go and get served for this Daawat at Theater near you.

The plot of the film is as half-baked and unconvincing as its treatment. Long queues of suitors at a hotel in Lucknow, the unabashed demands of greedy families, the whole camera set up for a sting operation and the fact that ladka-ladki should spend three days together to know each other and give the viewers a free hop-on hop-off Lucknow darshan in Tariq's red Impala look too forced and feeble.Visit Site for more
There are good movies, and there are bad. And, there are films like Daawat-e-Ishq' that slip into a position of much oblivion without leaving any impact.Daawat-e-Ishq' could've been savoured had Habib stuck to treating our tummies instead. Alas, it's not as indulgent as the kebabs or biriyanis, or firnis that we were served occasionally.Visit Site for more
Daawat-E-Ishq doesn't belong to either of the extremities, this movie is more or less like a dish that is not restaurant standards but a yummy treat to have at home. The film stars Parineeti Chopra and Aditya Roy Kapur as the lead protagonists and is a light film that deals with a serious issue like dowry in the most commercial way possible. Quite a masaledaar yummy movie that is a good one time watch but not so great that it would be the biggest blockbuster movie of the year. But Habib's direction, and the spicy tale definitely deserves to be watched.
Daawat-e-Ishq Movie Poster
Rating: 2.5/5 Stars (Two and half stars)
Star Cast: Aditya Roy Kapur, Parineeti Chopra,Anupam Kher, Karan Wahi
Director: Habib Faisal
What's Good: Habib Faisal's blends well the food undertone with a social message narrating a half decent love story.
What's Bad: The film fails to grip. There is zero connect with the characters for most part in the film. Pre interval, the film drastically tumbles down and finds it very hard to rise after that. The chemistry between it's leading pair is not impressive.
Loo break: Quite a few
Watch or Not?: Daawat-e-Ishq is a disappointing recipe of love. Quite like its story, the film thugs you into believing it's all about lofty, delicious, gourmet cinema. Sadly it's none of those and not even close. When the story doesn't work, nothing about the film can work, not even the performances. The film doesn't even rise up to be a passable watch. It is an excruciating bore lacking the fundamental thrill factor. Predictable and mediocre, Daawat-E-Ishq is the not a film Aditya, Parineeti and mostly Habib Faisal can pass for posterity.
Gulrez (Parineeti Chopra) lives with her father in Hyderabad. After being rejected by a string of guys for being unable to pay Dowry, and getting her heart broken by someone, she decides on going to America for future studies. Gulrez goes with her father to Lucknow to get married To a guy quoting the highest dowry price and then file the anti dowry case against them to get lumpsum alimony. But she meet Tariq (Aditya Roy Kapoor) who despite being nothing like a gentleman is kind, sensitive and loves her for the person she is. Will Tariq claim dowry and get framed by Gulrez? Can Gulrez go to America to study Or will Gulrez really fall in love with Tariq?
Aditya Roy Kapur and Parineeti Chopra in a still from movie Daawat-e-Ishq'
Romantic comedies thrive on chemistry. And though Daawat-e-Ishq is more of a message carrying film, the gratuitous romantic angle spoils the film's soul. There was no need to based this film on romance. It would have worked better. But Bollywood cannot abandon its tendencies of falling for the happily ever after endings. Romancing superfluous trappings is the eternal love story here. But this Habib Faisal film loses its plot because of its forced attempt to bring love in a story that could have survived better without it.
Making a pertinent remark about the dowry system in India which reduces the boy and the girl to meager items, waiting to be brought or sold like mere commodities. Chopra's character Gulrez is a school topper, hard working lady who cannot land herself a guy because her father cannot pay adequately for her dowry. With the big American dream in her eyes, she sets on living life on her terms after being ditched by a spineless guy who couldn't stop the scheming ways of his parents.
I was quite enjoying the first part of the film. It looked fresh before Habib Faisal took the Bollywood route out. I don't understand the need of our films to prove that the girl is incapable of being ruthless. The film could have been dark and sinister with enough thrills but could not because it's writers decided on putting us through the lecture of why dowry is an unfair practice.
The preachy, unconvincing climax was annoying. It was half baked and hurried and doesn't waste much on appearing to be logical. I don't want to give out much of the story but Gullu's confusion made a mess of the story. I don't understand why would anyone go forward with a vicious plan despite knowing goodness of a person. The hotch potch of the second half was a harrowing experience and the sudden change of heart for Gulrez is the last thing one can buy. It was frankly a weak plot all along but even the dissatisfactory execution makes the film a doomed tale.
Parineeti Chopra delivers the weakest performance of her career. Her cutesy act that usually makes one giddy doesn't work due to the lack of an interesting story. Even her chemistry with Aditya seemed forced and lacked palpability.
I have never been a fan of Aditya Roy Kapur despite his Aashiqui 2 success but he was earnest in the film. Not a brilliant performance but surely Kapoor was better than good and tried his hand at something different than his usual fare.
Anupam Kher as Booji is a delight to watch. Though his character had many unconvincing veins, Kher plays it with zeal and gusto.
I don't think one bad film is enough to question Habib Faisal's caliber but one cannot deny that Daawat-e-Ishq is a boring film. Not exactly unwatchable but the film lacks the zing and flavors that the title and the trailer promised us. It doesn't simply do justice to expectations pining on it making it a very underwhelming watch. The scenes where Parineeti and Anupam are interviewing grooms was probably meant to mock the system but in no way does it affect you. Similarly falling in love over kebabs and firni in 3 days is a tad bit overstretched. To add on, Sajid Wajid's score for the film seems uninteresting. And though it is kept at 2 hours sharp, the film in between shuffling between Lucknow and Hyderabad bores you to death.
Daawat-E-Ishq dodges you with tall promises of serving a great food film or even a good film. But it's diet food variety of cinema that is neither healthy nor nutritious and leaves you famished by the end of it. Parineeti and Aditya despite their earnest performances cannot bring the needed charm to the film. I am going with a very generous 2.5/5. It had a lot of potential but the feeble sketching makes it a forgettable watch.

Director: Habib Faisal
Starring: Aditya Roy Kapur, Parineeti Chopra, Anupam Kher
Rating: 2.5
Parineeti Chopra is one of the most versatile actors we have these days, the kind of versatility that is reflected in her choice of err...cities. After playing a young vivacious, feisty girl of Delhi in Ladies vs Ricky Behl, she played a young vivacious, feisty girl of UP in Ishaqzade and then a young, feisty girl of Jaipur in Shuddh Desi Romance. And now she plays the young, feisty girl of Hyderabad in Daawat-e-Ishq. If it doesn't form the most envious repertoire of roles, at least it would make great material for the most difficult spot the difference' puzzle for Reader's Digest. The saving grace is that she is so good, so convincing in getting the accent right, in owning the character and her lines that it only reestablishes her as a fine actor.
Daawat-e-ishq deals with the issue of dowry. Abdul Qadir (Anupam Kher) is a court clerk with a meagre salary of Rs 30,000 a month. He can't get her daughter Gulrez (Parineeti Chopra) married as he can't fulfill the demands of her greedy suitors and their families. Hence the father-daughter duo decides to turn tables around by taping and trapping the greediest suitor under the IPC section of 498A and extorting money so that the beti can fulfill her cobbler dreams in Amrica. (Ok ok don't kill me; she wants to be a shoe designer.)
In a scene Qadir is skeptical as he admits in one of the rather interestingly written dialogues, "498A ka section hain, koi nail polish nahi, jo laga denge." Alas the writers don't understand the importance of this nugget and go about weaving a con story that looks as simple as applying nail polish.
The plot of the film is as half-baked and unconvincing as its treatment. Long queues of suitors at a hotel in Lucknow, the unabashed demands of greedy families, the whole camera set up for a sting operation and the fact that ladka-ladki should spend three days together to know each other and give the viewers a free hop-on hop-off Lucknow darshan in Tariq's red Impala look too forced and feeble.
The direction by Habib Faisal is as inconsistent as its characters who are happy, upset, angry, melodramatic and romantic all in a span of a few minutes. Abdul Qadri is shown shaking like a leaf facing corruption at work and the same Qadri executes a well-planned con job. Tariq (Adity Roy Kapur) is raging with anger and wants to teach Gulrez a lesson, except he cools down in a jiffy and calmly listens to her sob sob I-was-insulted-by-dowry-mongers-and-hence-left-with-no-choice story. Such sudden change? Even Mumbai rains are more predictable guys!
Towards the end Gulrez feels guilty of conning her lover. After all she has sung two long songs with the hero. In Hindi films, couples make half a dozen babies in two songs; the least she can do is feel guilty.
The daawat bit of the movie is only confined to Tariq's kitchen. The food by no means is instrumental in furthering the plot or bringing any drastic change in the story. Tariq could have been a mechanic, a watchman or a wrestler. It wouldn't have mattered.
The only saving grace of the film is its performances. Anupam Kher's experience and Aditya's endearing act infuse some life into these flat characters. Parineeti is as easy as ever. Trained by another actor Elahe Hiptoola (who has produced delightful movies like Hyderabad Blues with Nagesh Kukunoor in the past), she nails the Hyderabadi accent. After Rani Mukerji, she is one of those few actors who know her craft so well.
The film also boasts of shooting on location and brings the beautiful cities of Hyderabad and Lucknow alive on celluloid. Despite good performances, the film loses out as it makes regressive comments on a bunch of things. Abdul Qadri is impressed with her daughter's grit and courage. With tearful eyes he says, "Tu toh mera hero hain." "Hero nahi, heroine," corrects Gulrez to which he says that she had been so fearless in life that he could never tell if he had a son or a daughter. Dude, you have a daughter not a hermaphrodite. And yes daughters can be intrepid and have a mind of their own.
Gulrez's love interest, Tariq is no less. He redefines misogyny as he tells Gulrez he would never have a problem even if she puts on weight after marriage. Wow so generous! Such magnanimity broke my heart! She should have pounced on him and married him right then. He is a cook, will feed her fat and will have no problem with her weight. What a forward thinking, liberal catch he is!! (Though he redeems himself by asking her if she would have a problem if he develops a paunch.)
Dowry by no means should mean humiliation to women or their families. To use that humiliation to con someone can never be justified. And to show such characters as heroes on the big screen is downright regressive.
