'Finding Fanny': Film Review (The Hollywood Reporter)

9:36 AM PDT 9/16/2014 by Frank Scheck

Five mismatched travelers embark on a road trip to find a lost love in this English-language Indian comedy

Indian filmmaker Homi Adajania clearly doesn't follow the Bollywood playbook. His latest feature contains no musical numbers (save for an end credit throwaway); maintains a fairly consistent tone throughout; doesn't run a marathon length; and is in English, with subtitles for those unable to decipher the accents. Unfortunately, he's replaced the familiar conventions with a forced quirkiness that resembles American indie comedies at their worst. Despite its cast of Indian film veterans including venerable Bollywood star Dimple Kapadia, Finding Fanny quickly loses its way.

The story revolves around a road trip undertaken by five residents of a sleepy village in Goa after local postman Ferdie (Naseeruddin Shah) finds a letter mysteriously returned to him that he sent decades ago to his beloved Fanny. Assuming that her lack of a reply to his marriage proposal meant that she had found someone else, he's been pining for her ever since.

Getting wind of the situation is the young Angie (Deepika Padukone), who's had no small amount of romantic heartbreak herself having become a widow on her wedding day when the groom had an unfortunate accident involving the wedding cake. She decides to organize a road trip in an attempt to reunite Ferdie with his lost love. Trailing along are her former mother-in-law, the imperious Rosie (Kapadia, humiliatingly outfitted with a massively padded posterior for would-be comic effect); lecherous artist Don Pedro (Pankaj Kapur), who happens to have a thing for big-bottomed women; and Savio (Arjun Kapoor), Angie's childhood friend who's still bitterly resentful over her having chosen someone else to marry.

Hilarity does not ensue during the resulting farcical proceedings, accompanied by an overbearing musical score and including mordant gags involving two corpses " one feline and one human " that make Weekend at Bernie's seem sophisticated by comparison. The younger performers are pretty but bland, while the Bollywood veterans mug unmercifully in a hopeless attempt to wring laughs from the strained material. There's also a profusion of bromides about the perpetual quest for love that fail to deliver the intended poeticism. Much like the rusty jalopy in which the characters make their journey, Finding Fanny delivers a very bumpy ride.

I havent seen the film yet, but to be honest I wasnt expecting the film to be a hit. Deepika is not the lead but one of the charcters in the film, the film is in English with limited screens, It was a huge risk for DP, considering her position after the fantastic year she had last year. I'm just happy the film and Deepika have both been appreciated. She's got HNY so she will get that hit.

Box Office India Trade Network

Finding Fanny was a little lower on tuesdsay than Monday and has grossed around 20 crore nett in five days and should end the week at 23 crore nett plus. Below are its daily figures for the first five days.

Friday - 4,25,00,000

Saturday - 6,00,00,000

Sunday - 6,25,00,000

Monday - 1,80,00,000

Tuesday - 1,70,00,000

TOTAL - 20,00,00,000

The way the collections fell on Monday it looks a tough ask for the film to cross 30 crore nett for lifetime business.

Finding Fanny Tuesday (5th Day) Collections

in Box office Report September 17, 2014

Finding Fanny 5th day Tuesday box office collection is 1.75 cr which takes the 5 days total business to 22 cr. The first Tuesday collections has a drop of 12 % from Monday.

The movie is heading towards a 25 cr first week which will be a decent result and it remains to be seen if it can perform well in second week or not.

The movie is superb in circuits like Mysore, Delhi/NCR and Mumbai. The rest depends on the week days business which is something we have to wait and watch. It is so because most of the English films ( especially Hollywood) attract its prime audience in the weekend and then stays steady but low in the weekdays. It will be interesting to see whether Finding Fanny continues this trend or breaks it.

Day Wise Box Office Collections of Finding Fanny

  • Friday :- 4.65 cr
  • Saturday :- 6.55 cr
  • Sunday :- 7.00 cr
  • Monday :- 2 cr
  • Tuesday :- 1.75 cr

Total ( 5 Day Collections ) :- 21.95 cr

Finding Fanny Not Up To The Mark In Overseas

Wednesday 17 September 2014 11.00 IST

Box Office India Trade Network

Finding Fanny was below expectations in overseas as it had a huge release of over 300 theatres but grossed around $1.4 million which is not good for that sort of release. The business is similar to Entertainment in terms of release and gross. The film probably went wider than a film of this sort normally would because it was in English.

The film was released on 225 theatres in the big markets like United Kingdom, US/Canada, Gulf and Australia and returned around $1.15 million from these four circuits.

The business in US/Canada was best with $515,000 but it was also a big release with 121 screens. Still if it can get to $1 million in US/Canada it will be a good result for that market.

Finding Fanny: 1st Tuesday Box Office Collections

Finding Fanny continued to maintain a steady ride. The film collected approximately 2 crores on its fifth day according to early estimates on Day 5. With this, the Homi Adajania directorial now stands with a total collection of 24.40 crores approx at the domestic box office.

With its unusual storyline and presentation, the film was not expected to have a bumper opening, yet surprisingly Finding Fanny struck a nerve with the audiences and thus kept a good pace over the five days.

The film is going strong at multiplexes and has also generated a good positive buzz about it. Since the critics too gave a positive nod to it, Finding Fanny in spite of having a limited screen count has fared good so far.

The Industry Endorsed Finding Fanny A Big Way But Public Totally Rejected It So Is This The Reason Why Nearly All Films Flop As Industry Have Totally Different Tastes Compared To The Audience

Wednesday 17 September 2014 11.00 IST

Box Office India Trade Network

Q. The industry endorsed Finding Fanny a big way but public totally rejected it so is this the reason why nearly all films flop as industry have totally different tastes compared to the audience.

Ans. Its not as if all the industry endorsed some will and some won't and even the ones who do its probably not about the film but about relationships with people involved in the film. 😆 Its easy to tell when praise is genuine as that film may not be a hit but will have some sort sustainment at the box office, when a film crashes like Finding Fanny it looks a case of trying to give it a push over the weekend and it worked to a certain extent but eventually word of mouth tells all.
