I like Meenakshi in Swati and Damini. She looks beautiful, typical Indian beauty. She used to nail classical dance sequences.
Whatever I have watched of her on TV I think she was one of the popular stars of 80s but was overshadowed by Sridevi and others because she looked rather...gharelu. She never radiated any hotness factor that Sri and later Madhuri radiated in their item songs/dance numbers. She looked misfit in western outfits though perfect in Indian ones. She has less popular songs to her credit. And she never overshadowed heroes the way Sridevi used to. She does have less screen presence compared to Sridevi.
Though she acted very well and had better dialogue delivery than Sridevi, she is less versatile. Her forte is drama.
She seemed to have no girlish appeal or innocence. She was always mature woman and plain Jane which is why I think only her saas bahu type films are shown on TV most frequently. She didn't have spunk like Amrita Singh. I consider Jayaprada and Meenakshi as beautiful bhabhi/bahu types.
I feel she deserved to win best actress for Damini. Juhi was nothing in front of her. HHRPK performance is not even a challenge compared to Damini.
Meenakshi doesn't seem to have comparable box office record and popularity.
I find that point about comeback very sexist. Who says people work only when there is rift in personal life or financial problems? Anyone can and should work when they want to.
She runs a dance school now and her work is different.
There is nothing shameful in making comeback.
I think Meenakshi just got sandwiched in crowd of more charismatic actresses including seniors, contemporaries and new lot. Hence she gets less due.
