And what makes you think Shuddi will be better than Suryavanshi or Veer? The film hasn't even released. 😆Their stories were also good. Ultimately, it depends on the screenplay. If the screen play is awful, the film will tank. And Salman in periodic avatar has never been accepted because it goes against what his fans love to see him as. His romantic films in the recent past have flopped as well just like his period films. The only thing that seems to work for Salman is Over the top action or comedy genre. That's his thing. He owns it. His fans seem to love him in that avatar as well.

Salman has made Shuddhi bigger and better'

A relieved Karan Malhotra can finally dream again.

Karan Malhotra who had disappeared after his directorial debut, Agneepath, is back in business. Salman Khan has stepped into Hrithik Roshan's shoes but before Shuddhi takes off, he will wrap up the remake of Warrior with Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra. After two years of oblivion, he opens up to Mirror. Excerpts:

Hrithik dropped out of Shuddhi citing date problems. But reports claim that he was worried about the tough task of toning up for the role after his accident and unhappy that the film revolves around the heroine and villain...

Well, there is a villain in Shuddhi and the lead role demands a certain amount of exposure, but Hrithik's exit had nothing to do with creative differences. I'd assume that his personal problems during the period led to him dropping out of the film.

You must have been shattered?

I was disappointed. I've learnt the hard way that you need to have options when journeying through life. I used to be quite stuck-up earlier, but now I no longer blame one person.

Are you in touch with Hrithik?

Off and on. We have an emotional bond, he was my first hero.

After Hrithik's exit, you approached Ranveer Singh and Shah Rukh Khan. They took their time, adding to the delay.

No comments on the casting. And on the delay, ek haath se taali nahin bajti. If somebody was delaying the project then I allowed it to happen. If it hadn't been for Karan (Johar) and my wife Ekta, I wouldn't have survived, emotionally or financially.

Did you ever think of aborting Shuddhi?

The media insisted Shuddhi would never be made, but Karan and I boosted each other.

In the interim, you decided to remake Warrior...

I had discussed the idea with Karan after Agneepath, and suddenly things fell into place.

Back to Shuddhi, how did Salman come on board? And how do you see the film now?

Karan and I met Salman at his Bandstand house. He said 'yes' after listening to just 20 minutes of the narration. As for the second part of your question, Salman sir has made Shuddhi bigger and better. My film is now top-lined by India's biggest star who has a phenomenal reach.

Salman is known to be quite moody, how will you handle him?

I have worked with him as an assistant director on Jaan-E-Mann and Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge. Of course, this time I'm the director so it will be a different experience.

For the leading lady will you go back to Kareena Kapoor?

Shuddhi has changed from what it started out to be. When changes happen, one needs to look at things afresh.

It's Deepika Padukone's dream to work with Salman and now that the date clash with Bajirao Mastani has been averted, she can still do Shuddhi...

Who wouldn't want a popular and successful heroine in his film? But we haven't taken a call yet about whether it will be Deepika, Kareena or someone else.

Now that the hero has changed, will the script change too?

We'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Right now, I am focussed on Warrior.

Read the interview im sure the movie will be made to suit him ..the director does not have to make this project on how he envisioned it when someone else was doing it!! The director is agneepath director and people praise him to te skys so im sure he will take salmans image in mind!!

Same fans accepted MPK, HDDCS, HAHk, PKTDK, DHLJ, Tere Naam and none of these were the kind of movies salman is doing recently

Tere naam was in 2003. 11 years ago. The rest you mentioned are older than that. Since 2003, have any of his plain old romantic films worked? God Tussi Ho? Mein aur Mrs Khanna? Kyun Ki? Yuvraaj? Veer? Lucky? All flopped.

He's been rocking the action/comedy genre ever since, on the other hand. My opinion is based on his record from the recent past. I'm not saying Shuddi will tank just to be hateful.

But I will say this. Salman is a better choice than Hrithik. I know nobody will agree. But Hrithik makes me laugh with his acting in period films. His "intense" look is pretty darn cringeworthy and hilarious.

How do you know that shuddhi is a period movie! I mean no one knows exactly what it's about and even if it's a period movie then so what? What does it prove? Just because suryavanshi and veer flopped that doesn't mean shuddhi will flop. Don't forget MPK, HDDCS, hahk, tere naam ect all were hits and none of these movies had that so called over the top action or comedy!

And what did you said suryavanshi and veer had good story? Yeah right! 😆 I am a huge salman fan but suryavanshi and veer sucked. These movies had no story.

And believe me shuddhi won't be like suryavanshi or veer! Shuddhi is dharma production movie! And veer was sohail movie and suryavanshi was god knows whose movie. There's is a huge difference between dharma ph and some other ph. Dharma knows how to make romantic movies!

Salman is at top right now. If jai ho can cross 100 crs then shuddhi probably will do well! And last but not the least, you don't know what shuddhi is about so saying that salman won't suit the role isn't right!

Mamk, i am confuse was it a sohail movie or salman movie? I don't know if you had seen that movie or not but it was terrible and sohail was the lead. Salman had a flower pot role in that movie.

God tussi great ho wasn't a romantic movie, salman become god in that movie or something, again it was a bokwas movie.

Yuvraaj was terrible movie glad it was a disaster. Subhash gai made a crap. Lucky again a crapfest.

Kyon ki was one movie which was good but could had been better and again kyon ki was not a romantic movie,

And the difference between the time when these movies release and now is that salman is at his peak now. He's at the top. Shuddhi is gonna make a lot of money as it has salman movie who's at top, dharma ph movie, and probably will have A lister heroine and villan. You cannot compare dharma ph movie with the movies of salman you had just mention.

And ETT was a love sTory and was a blockbuster
