Everything old is not great for me. If not I will venerate Sati and Slavery, not despise them. Go and see Raj Kapoor's filmography which I did. Still think Aamir is the greatest in BW ? Contemporary, yes. But all time ??šŸ˜²šŸ¤”

When Aamir has sent films to Cannes that won awards, has more foreign film entries in Oscars than anyone he becomes the greatest. These are just facts, not an opinion.

Aamir is one of the greatest Indian film has ever seen, but to say he is the greatest is *shrug*.

Talking about filmography and only Bw. Not overall . My opinion on his filmography is nothing to laugh about, movies are subjective.

MORE

Sanjeev Kumar - Angoor, Koshish, Mausam, Aandhi, Silsila, Shatranj ke khiladi, Trishul, Pati Patni, Pati Patni aur woh, Anubhav, Arjun Pandit, Dastak, Khilona, Naya Din nayi raat, Yehi hai Zindagi...(actually his list is never ending due to brief appearances in many acclaimed films like Parichay).

Sunil Dutt - Mother India, Hum Hindustani, Padosan, Sujata, Sadhna, Mujhe Jeene do, Chhaya, Ek Phool Chaar Kaante (most films where hero has to impress the girl's family are copied from this one), Gumraah, Dard Ka rishta, Humraaz, Amrapali.
(Naagin and Jaani Dushman are trendsetters in masala)

Ashok Kumar - Achyut Kanya, Kangan, Chalti ka naam Gaadi, Parineeta, Chitralekha, Aashirwaad, Hatey Bazarey, Howrah Bridge, Mahal, Dhool ka Phool, Bandi, Bandini, Pakeezah, Khubsoorat, Khatta meetha, Gumraah, Chhoti si baat, (again never ending list because of several roles in acclaimed films).

Dilip Kumar - Amar, Mashaal, Shakti, Ganga Jumna, Ram Aur Shyam (including it simply for the sheer trendsetter that it is), Devdas, Footpath, Shaheed, Musafir, Daag, Aadmi, Aan, Andaaz, Aadmi, Mughal E Azam (not just a blockbuster, it is acclaimed as well), Naya Daur.

Dev Anand - Guide, Taxi driver, CID, Kalapani, Tere mere sapne, Baazi, Kala Bazar, Bombay ka baboo, Paying Guest, Hare Krishna Hare Ram, Rahi

Dharmendra - Bandini, Satyakam, Guddi, Anpadh, Chupke Chupke, Blackmail, Anupama, Jeevan Mrityu, Resham ki dori, Jwar Bhata

SRK - Darr, Anjaam, Kabhi Haan kabhi naa, DDLJ, Chak de India, Dil Se, Swades, Baazigar, Raju ban Gaya Gentleman (his Devdas is also included among best films of world cinema by Empire and Time, but still I do not think it is worth inclusion).

Salman Khan - HAHK, Baaghi, Khamoshi, Tere naam, Phir Milenge, AAA.

Among his contemporaries Aamir has the edge. Only Ajay or SRK can even try to compare (as per lists shared on previous pages).

Not including Guru Dutt and Balraj Sahni because they have largely serious filmography. They do not lack in quality in any way. But maybe variety.

The debate becomes futile once films are not discussed and mere dialogues like "past is overrated", "X star's films are garbage" begins. šŸ‘ŽšŸ¼
Aamir is just one of the best. No way all time great. He can be called best only among his contemporaries in Bollywood.

Lists were given. What else now? Critics ratings, press from those times, analysis by contemporary film scholars? To verify quality of those films?

No response on films even after giving lists.šŸ˜†

The question was of any actor. Lists of most major performers are given.

It is not about calling only past great. It is about showing that there are solid films in many actors' oeuvre.

In terms of filmography and BW only when you said no one matches him for quality in BW, that becomes hyperbolic especially when he has a Dhoom 3 in recent memory and the doozies of the 90s. That is why I laughed, not to insult you.

I would love to call Raj Kapoor the greatest in Indian cinema, in terms of filmography and producing, directing, acting, award winning films, international recognition he is miles ahead of most. But I cannot because he certainly has some doozies too. Ram Teri Ganga Mayile 🤢 alone and his Randhir debut film 🤢 .No one can be called authoritatively the greatest or the best without facts and when you said no one matches Aamir in terms of quality in BW, that was hyperbolic and cannot be backed up with facts. I would say a lot of Aamir's movies and Dhoom 3 undermine his overall quality filmography wise. But the 2000s until Dhoom 3 were a golden time in his career.

Raj Kapoor, Ashok Kumar, Dilip Kumar & Sanjeev Kumar have impressive lists. It would be hard, for me, to pick one over the other. Aamir is right up there with them.

@atominis The debate became hostile when you started with 'typical aamir fan'. There was no need for that. Secondly, you tried to twist my post into a statement when it was a question, a subjective one at that. Did you see that list? It was garbage.

Anyways, I'm done here. At least, we can all agree, Aamir is one of the best ever and quite easily the best among his contemporaries.

Why not? Most Aamir fans have tendency to talk as if Aamir is the only one who ever made or did quality films or took risks. Even his unknown films are called cults.

The kind of responses you and some others were giving are bound to get such responses only. Sorry.

and AB Sr is no doubt the biggest star that BW has so far...all the three Khans do not even come close...He is a better actor than all three of them combined...but but but...the movies that created a rage for him...are not anything to talk about...Mukkadar ka sikander, Deewar, Zanjeer...were all ordinary masala movies which the presence of AB Sr made worth watching...take away Amitabh from all those movies and u would have nothing left...I would rather watch his movies that he did after giving up his image of the angry young man...Black, Paa and so many more...even Bhootnath...

yes you heard it right.
why amir gets upper hand cos he makes his performance perfect by spending hours rehearsing it just like some actors spend too much time in front of mirror perfecting their looks. i think amir does one shot over, and over and over and over...till it comes out perfect. bechara director.
bhai on the other hand...walks on sets, reads his scenes, looks in mirror for good 5 mins and GO. couple of shots, done, pack up!
he doesn't practice for hours like mr perfecto. if you think amir is the perfect actor than there are millions and zillions who think bhai and srk are equal or better, but no less.
method acting ki aissi ki taisssi...
wow...take away mukkadar ka sikkandar and deewar. come again. yeah but we make sure to include amirs best to make his filmography look good. i am not seeng any criminal - don, elderly laachaar father bhagbaan, jealous singer husband/ abhimaan, a poet kabhi kabhi, an orphan, a illegimate beta , a dockworker, a mine worker, a cop, budha chef cheeni kamm , a saudagar, paa, black, ...waht else you need in a filmography...each movie well made, well performed...i can go on and on. different geners, comedy, romance, drama/family, ...
yeah right...3 idiots, dil chahta hai, one lagaan, ...so these movies make a better filmography for amir, but amits abhimaan, saudagar, don, kabhi kabhi, paa, anand are what??
again...don't touch big b's mukkadar ka sikkandar...this alone is enough to drop a bomb on amirs filmography.

Certainly not my top 10, certainly not her best quality wise, but versatility wise, it has action, comedy, scifi, drama, romance.

I can do the same for Sridevi in Telugu and Tamil with better films. Her Hindi filmography was her worst IMO.

Good you brought out Sridevi filmography. I think past actresses had amazing versatility and quality of films. Nutan, Waheeda, Nargis, Meena and even Asha Parekh, Mala Sinha.

I am sure there must be stars and iconic films in era before 40s also. No info about them anymore sadly except some tidbits on few classic cinema websites.

We should have a separate thread on females with quality and good films in their career.

Nothing to talk about? Sorry. They are all acclaimed. Only ones that were not were Manmohan Desai ones. Deewar, Muqaddar Ka sikandar, Zanjeer, Trishul are not mere masala. Namak Haraam was about working class. It was acclaimed. Abhimaan, Mili, Anand, Saudagar, Alaap, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, Main Azaad hoon, Majboor, Chupke Chupke,Silsila, Kabhi Kabhi, Saat Hindustani, Parwana, Shakti, Bemisaal, Manzil, Do Anjane, Don, Kasme vaade, Kaala Patthar are all different and Amitabh is brilliant in them. He is not just angry young man in those.

And the films are good. All are acclaimed. I did not mention many like Adaalat, Dostana, Great Gambler because they are not acclaimed that much, only Bachchan shines in them.

Even Bhootnath? LOL! You trashed his glittering filmography with this sacrilegious last sentence! 😲

FYI when lists of best films are made they are incomplete without Bachchan and mostly include his films done in his prime.

The difference in ordinary masala and Bachchan films is evident comparing his films to those made now or made in 80s by wannabe new heroes of that time. It shows not only in acting but also storytelling and context.

Critics analyse only those films till date. Not any other routine action film. Manmohan Desai films are not great that is true. But not ones with Mehra, Chopra, Mukherjee etc.

Combined with films later, Amitabh becomes even bigger. His post 2000s films only add cherry on the cake. They are not his sole lifeline (even as an artiste).

Potboilers, action, romance, comedy, drama, artsy, commercial hits, critically acclaimed and award winning films, socially relevant films - Bachchan has it all.
