Reality shows are producing imposters - Arijit Singh

Arijit Singh is one of those singers who got a break from a reality show but it was not easy to sustain. It took him seven years to establish himself as a singer.

Life After A Reality Show

Once I finished Fame Gurukul, I went to West Bengal and started doing shows but I was also looking for a break in Bollywood. Frankly, I thought it would be easy once I was known on television. How wrong I was! There were people who had also misguided me. So I had to start from scratch once again. I have realised that one has to be patient and work hard on their skills. Those initial years in Mumbai were very tough. At the time, it was mainly composers who were singing for each other, like Vishal Dadlani, Shankar Mahadevan, Sulaiman and Himesh Reshammiya.

Initial Days

I chose jingles and music production over singing scratches. I started assisting music composers. It was Shankar Mahadevan who helped me lot in my career. Then I joined Pritam as an assistant music composer.

Skilled Master

I never thought I would become a programmer. But when I didn't get a break, I took it up as a career and started to enjoy it too. I forgot that I wanted to become a singer. But, suddenly, my songs started releasing and the audience loved them.

First Break As A Singer

Shankar (Mahadevan) sir gave me my first break in an album tiltled High School 2, where I sang Aaja nachle with Raja Hassan, Shilpa Rao and Tarannum Malik. But it was only in 2011 that my song Phir mohabbat from Murder 2, became a rage. People still talk about it. Then Raabta from Agent Vinod, Yaariyaan from Cocktail and Phir le aaya dil from Barfi! all proved to be chartbusters.

End Of lip sync songs

There was a time when some singers were known for a particular star's voice but that hardly happens today. Also, lip-sync songs are not done as most of the songs I have sung are background songs or situational songs.

Also, reality shows are producing imposters. In these cases, the originality of the voice texture is missing because most of them want to be Sonu Nigam or Udit Narayan. So a good voice has to stand out, like Suraj Jagan's, who I feel has a very romantic voice.

Future Projects

It's hard to say because I record scratches and I am a technical guy. Sometimes, we record a song for a film but that song is chosen by some other director. It will take a few more years before I talk about my projects and when I will be called upon to sing a particular song.
