In my opinion MPK is not given the due that it deserves.
This film truly changed trend to love stories and family films. And proved people like to watch traditions onscreen.
It has right blend of family values of HAHK and rebellion of youth of QSQT.
Tropes like using a pet to convey messages, playing antakshri to confess love which are seen in HAHK and DDLJ are originally from MPK. The premise - friendship is beginning of love was popularised by MPK (and earlier Bobby), copied later in fancier KKHH by K Jo.
I like MPK better as Prem actually proves himself to Suman's dad by working hard, earning on his own and keeping in his limits than just running away with the girl or pretending to win hearts.
People hail HAHK and DDLJ in ideological context as portrayal of liberalised, new India. I think MPK is no less in this aspect. Prem is also foreign return rich guy. A guy who can equally claim riches and joys but is rooted to his culture and can struggle as well whenever it is required of him. And Aloknath might have been shunned by his childhood friend for being poor but he too goes ahead, travels outside country, does business and earns enough to throw a suitcase of money at his rich friend's face. He upgraded his status instead of crying like a downtrodden man in his village jhopdi. If this is not new India then what is?
Music wise this film has too many songs. This is the only reason why I cannot watch it anymore without using FF button. But it did bring revolution in film music.
It just lacks the fancy feel and polish of HAHK and YRF/Dharma films. And probably gets less due as it came at end of 80s...a bridge period of sorts. So gets neglected in discussions that compartmentalise era on basis of specific years/decades.
I liked both Salman and Bhagyshree in it. Acting of others was also less melodramatic. The film has a story, a plot to talk of unlike other movies that are MTV or wedding videos.
