I and Varun Dhawan abused each other: Sidharth Malhotra

Sidharth, who is busy with promotions of Ek Villain, spoke to TOI about healthy competition, wish to work with Deepika Padukone and drawing inspiration from Sanjay Dutt.
Varun Dhawan, Alia and you are all on your third films. Any competition there?
Siddharth: Competition is not only with them, but with everybody else as well. I really liked the promos of Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya. I called up Varun and Alia to congratulate them. It's a great trailer, it has got amazing energy. But healthy competition is always there. But we wish each other loads of luck and we get excited about each others films and we see each others works. This will also be the same. So I am waiting to see Humpty and they are dying to see Ek Villain.
There are reports that Varun is your friend turned foe? No he is not. We called up each other and tried to have a fight, but we couldn't. We even tried to abuse each other but started laughing. So these are just rumours, which I think people should check with us, before talking about it.
Which are the actresses you really want to work with? There's a possibility I might do a film with Anushka Sharma, which will be great because I think she is a fantastic performer. And I would like to work with Deppika Padukone. If I get to share screen space with her, I will be overwhelmed. I think both Anushka and Deepika have the correct height for me.
You are flaunting a bare body and tattoos this time. Is it a conscious effort to move from sweet to rugged? Yes I think the character was such that it required a certain tough look. I don't have any reference from my previous work, I wanted to make it look different. Not only tattoos, I also came up with a scar on my face. I had a different hair cut and hair colour. We had two different portions in the film, so for one I sported a hair patch as well because we couldn't wait for my hair to grow. So a lot of attention has gone into my look.
When we think of villain, we think of Sanjay Dutt in Khalnayak. Did you do inspiration from him? Siddharth: Of course. Sanjay Dutt in Khalnayak or even the recent Agneepath, he is the bad mean guy, but amazingly he still has a likeability factor. So he was not a reference for the character. But what I learnt from him was that the overall feel of the character should be such that even if you are playing a negative character, you should never lose the likeability factor as you are still the main protagonist, who can't be grossing people out. After all, eventually it's a love story.

You didn't come across as a great dancer in Student of The Year, but improved a lot in your second film... Siddharth: Abhi I have taken training. Thoda bahut seekha hai. I didn't realize the importance of dance and never trained in Bollywood style. But with more and more songs I do, I hope to get better.
So who's the villain in the film " you or Riteish Deshmukh? Siddharth: We both are. Even me, by my actions in the first half, I am a very bad person. Even Riteish is a very negative character. We might have adapted different tones and different styles " I am more loud and physical, screaming and shouting. He's less apparent and unassuming.
One line each about Alia Bhatt, Parineeti Chopra and Shraddha Kapoor? Alia: My first co-star, my first film. Lot of history with her which will always be special. Parineeti: We both have loads in common. We are both Punjabis and share the same culture. We come from North India and stay in Mumbai all on our own. So I know where she comes from. Shraddha: We share the most understanding set-relationship because the film demanded certain that. It's a very heavy-hearted and intense film, which is not very conversational. We respect each other as performers. Regardless of who is on camera, we will perform an emotional scene for each other.

You trained Parineeti for your last film. Did you also get to train Shraddha? Siddharth: Not Shraddha. But I was trying to train Parineeti because we needed to push her. She's a big foodie.
