The reason this letter is addressed to Jaya is because during the Nirbhaya rape Jaya had made a passionate speech in the Rajya Sabha imploring the Congress to do something since they were in power in Delhi. The question now arises why isn't Jaya even making a statement against her party especially when the leaders of the party are making ridiculous statements like "boys will be boys". This rape is almost as heinous as the one in Delhi. Why the double standards and hypocrisy. As far as Shobha De is concerned what do her books - soft po*n or otherwise - have to do with her opinion? Just because she writes books that are in questionable taste does she give up her right to question the hypocrisy?

oh ok i didnt know jaya had made a speech and all that...

but i still dont believe in this ladys motives...(de)

during sania mirzas marriage to pakistani cricketer saga, she came on a panel
on tv and claimed it was all a 'publicity stunt' staged by sania and the guy to
remain in news...sanias cousin the ghazal singer talat aziz or something on
same panel of guests was
looking incredulous and said' im coming from their marriage'...and shobha de
was stil in denial and sticking to her view. 😆

This is the reason these things still happen in India, because these people have the opportunity to speak up against injustice or point out the mistakes to their own party, but they refuse to do so in order to stay in the good books of the party.

As a woman the least Jaya B can do is speak up against this and take a firm stand for the sake of others who can't do much or aren't well recognized to bring about change.

That Samajvadi party seems to be full of MCPs. The young and the old make all sorts of BS comments all the time - especially about women rights. This shows how backward our country really is.

I like Shobha De for this open letter. Very much needed. 👍🏼

Samajvadi filled with scums, why is Jaya still with the party baffles me but then it shows she is not part of it for any samaj sudhar or samaj seva but for the money and power.

Shobha De is a controversial figure. She can be pompous, patronizing and self-aggrandizing. However, sometimes she makes extremely relevant points. These great points should not be dismissed due to her abrasive personality.

She could write to the chief members or party members accused of shocking statements. Sadly, such open letters would fall on deaf ears. None of these members are going to give two hoots. Jaya Bacchan on the other hand is a somewhat influential party member. She is an influential social figure as well. Moreover, she has made sweeping statements about women's rights in the past. So it is but fair to implore Jaya to do something.

I also don't think Shobha De's literature should count against her from making statements about women's rights. Sex in literature isn't anti-feminist. The very notion that erotica is anti-woman and that women who create or consume erotica lack moral character is a major social problem in India.

Agreed 100%.
And wasn't this same Jaya B making an impassioned speech and shedding tears during the Nirbahaya case. And now just because the authorities are from her political party, she has stayed mum.

Well honestly, at the end, all political parties have only one interest, and that's the power and their own bank balances, BUT there are few which are worst than these, and SP is one of them. Their prominent leaders say absolutely unbearable things about rape and women all the time, they do absolutely insensitive things like that function when MN riots victims were still facing problems, and then the Bachhan family doesn't speaks a word about this...!! Great!! But one can't help... they are simply being loyal to those who helped them.
